Lara St. John, violin; Matt Herskowitz, piano

Ontario-born violin virtuoso Lara St. John has been described as“something of a phenomenon” by The Strad and a “high-poweredsoloist” by the New York Times, for her performances of thestandard repertoire from Bach to the present. With Montrealpianist, Matt Herskowitz, Lara brings her recent Shiksa project to our stage. Over many years Lara has collected traditional folktunes from the Jewish Diaspora, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Caucasus and Middle East. She presents these, re-imagined by today’s composers, and performed with stunning élan, in “a storm of perfection.” A spectacular opening to our 120th season, coupled with a major sonata from the violin/piano repertoire.

SHIKSARiko Higuma, piano; Kliment Krylovskiy, clarinet;Vanessa Mollard, violin

These remarkable musicians have brought this uncommoncombination of instruments into the international spotlight byreviving standards and by commissioning new music. Their variedand eclectic repertoire is reflected in wonderfully imaginativeprogramming. Works by contemporary composers from the US andCanada – Schoenfield and Gilbert – rub shoulders with Stravinsky,Khachaturian, Bartok and Shostakovich as well as Piazzolla, to reveala fascinating journey through the music of the WMCT’s history.
