Graphlike diagrams next to the flashbulbs tellat a glance 3 key facts about the specific flash-bulbs in terms of light intensity (Lumens):l. How rapidly the lamp reaches its peak in-ten sity (i nd icates co rrect synch ron ization).2. How much light output is obtainable.3. How long the bulb remains at or near itspeak (determines most effective shutterspeeds). Each chart shows simple plottings of the in-tensity of flash for both clear and blue bulbs. The amount of intensity is measured in"Millions of Lumens." The time interval is in"Milliseconds" (a millisecond is 1/ 1000th ofa second).Note: Flashcubes are not measured in Lumens, but in a unit of light measurement calledB.C.P.S. which stands for BEAM CANDLEPOWER SECONDS. Whenever a reflector isused as an integral part of a lamp, it is more

    Here's how lamp ranges stack up:Up to 8,00O lumens-Short range8,000-30,000 lumens-Medium range30,000-60,000 lumens-Long rangeOver 60,OO0 lumens-Extra-long range

meaningful and accurate to rate it in B.C.P.Sthan Lumens. A lumen unit is used to describa light source where light is going off in adirections. ln the Flashcube, where the reflector is part of the light source and the light idirectional, we are only interested in the actuacandle power reaching the subject. HenceB.C.P.S.-Beam Candle Power Seconds.Clear or blue, all Sylvania flashbulbs arcoated with a thin, tough film of lacquer asprotection against breaking or shattering. Foclear bulbs, the coating is optically clear, winot affect color balance even when used withthe most critical color films for artificial lightOn Sylvania blue flashbulbs, the coating icarefully color corrected and balanced undethe most rigid laboratory conditions. This provides maximum fidelity when used with dayIight color films. When used with black andwhite films the coating has little or no effecon the exposure due to the characteristics inlatitude of the film itself .

flip flashThe newest flash for the newest way to takepictures. You take eight flash pictures withoutchanging the unit. You simply shoot four, flipthe flash unit and shoot four more. When eachpicture is snapped, a tiny piezo-electric ceram-ic cube in the camera causes the flash to fire. Then the circuit automatically closes to set upthe next lamp for firing. Flip Flash's built-inheight minimizes the occurrence of red-eyewithout the need for a separate flash extender.Blue circles on back of the flash unit dis-appear when the flash has been fired, makingit easy to see the number of unused flashesremaining. Fits any Flip Flash camera.

Synchronization: Fine for X or F synchronization withadjustable cameras up to 1/30th sec.Light Output: 1,800 beam candlepower seconds. Peaksat 13 milliseconds.Easy to Use: Pops onto camera in an instant. Pops offeasily and is barely warm to the touch. Plastic windowprovides additional protection against breakage, andoffers built-in flashguard for every shot,New Base Contact Tab: Assures a snug fit in speciallydesigned camera sockets and has silver contacts toprovide good contact reliability.

svLUANlA blue dOf' magiCU beSylvania re-invented the Flashcube and came up with a 4-flash phoiolamp thaworks like magic, without batteries. What's the "trick"? Magicube operatemechanically, by means of a striker in the base of the cube. The striker triggersthe flash. No vibration is transmitted to the camera.Never again willthere be flash failures because of weak batteries or poor electrical contacts. Magicube is truly a revolution in flashbulb technology.Magicube is designed to be used with Kodak Pocket lnstamatics, Series X andother Magicube cameras.

1HII"F h i - power flashcubeBrilliant idea Polaroid's developed a line of focused flash cameras to makeHi-Power Flashcubes work, electrically. Now, your customers can take clear, sharpclose-ups-as close as3l2 feet from the subject. Or clear, sharp color pictures upto 10 feet from the subject-ranges never before possible with instant develop.ing cameras. It's all automatic As the user focuses the camera, shield louvers in the focusedflash system adjust to the proper distances. Sylvania's Hi-Power Flashcubes havemore than twice the light output of ordinary flashcubes so color pictures arebrilliantly lighted even at a range of 10 feet.

ta hi- power f lashcubeAll the ease and convenience of taking fourflash pictures without changing bulbs is nowcombined with improved uniformity, widerbeam spread and far greater light output. Thegreater coverage provided by the wider beamspread, along with the higher light output, tends to eliminate underexposure problemsand provides depth characteristics that satisfyboth old and new cameras.

Synchronization: Fine for X or F synchronization withadiustable cameras up to 1/30th sec. May be used forM synchronization at all shutter speeds,Light Output: 4,000 beam candle power seconds.Peaks at 12 milliseconds.Easy to Use: Pops onto camera or adapter in an in-stant. Pops off easily; manually or by ejection, and isbarely warm to the touch. Plastic window on cube pro-vides additional protection against breakage, andoffers built-in flashguard for every shot.New Base Design: Assures a secure fit yet is flexibleenough to use on both old or new cameras. Again leading the industry, Sylvania designed theTRU-FLECTOR pro, jector lamp. Compact, powerfuland with a sealed-in silver condensing reflector, thislamp simplifies the optical systems of 8mm movieprojectors by eliminating the need for external re-flectors and condensing lenses. ln addition to thesnap-in base for easy prefocusing alignment, TRU-FLECTOR design permits operation with increasedlamp efficiency of over 300 percent (A 150-watt

TRU-FLECTOR in an 8mm projector provides thesame screen brightness as a much larger 500-wattlamp in conventional optical systems.) Furthermore, recent modifications, utilizing "internal ballast con-struction," offer two-part filaments-far more ruggedand lasting. The result: a lamp that actually "lets youknow" before it burns out (by dimming) that it isapproaching the end of its useful, rated lifel

how tru-flector andtru-beam workln the standard projectionsystem, a reflector behind thelamp and a condenser in frontcollect only a small portionof the light and direct it ontothe film. An objective lenscollects the Iight that passesthrough the film and directsit at the screen. The efficiencyof this system is quite limited.ln the Tru-Flector or Tru-Beam system, an internal re-flector acts as a condenser, collects almost a full hemis-phere of light and focuses itdirectly on the film. lnsteadof the light loss with standardoptical systems, the objectivelens collects almost the fulllight output of the lamp anddirects the brighter imageonto the screen.

SyLVAN1A how to identify a defective projector lamp

Just as the projector is a delicate, precision instru-ment, so is its "heart"-the projector lamp. And,just as the projector may fail to operate whenabused, so may a bulb "blow" or refuse to workany longer.Sylvania's engineers examine every lamp returnedfor replacement and can determine by inspectionwhy a projector lamp failed. Lamps that failed be-cause of manufacturing flaws are considered validdefectives entitled to replacement under Sylvania's

    validdefectives

projector lamp guarantee. Lamps whose failure re-sulted only from reaching the end of a normal burn-ing Iife* are classified as invalid defectives andobviously cannot be replaced.Pictured and described below are two basic typesof valid defectives, as well as four examples of in-valid defectives which show tell-tale signs of normallife. Once pointed out, the signs are easy to read.Learning them will reduce many of your headaches."Average rated life. lf incorrectly used, of course, in wrongprojector, higher-than-normal voltage or improper position, shorter life must be expected.

Early failure: Lamp is clean andappears perfect in all respectsexcept for broken filament. Thislamp obviously has not beenburned any length of time, ifat all.

Leaker: A tiny leak in glassenvelope has allowed air toenter the bulb. Milky, cloudyappearance identifies thiscondition.

    normalburnouts

Normal life failure: Lamp hasobviously served normal ratedaverage life. Note the black-ening on top of reflector andtop of bulb. (lf lamp has ablue top, look under the topfor signs of blackening in anctherwise "new" lamp.)

Normal life failure: Lamp wasdesigned to burn horizontallyand the telltale blackening ison the side of the envelope, indicating a normal life.

Normal life failure: Thisshows another effect that canresult f rom normal burninglife-a blackened bridee.Normal life failure: This lamphas blistered after it was usedfor a number of hours. Glassbridge (under blue top) willalso be blackened, as previousexample, indicating usage.

projector and lamp reference guideThis guide contains an alphabetical listing of pro,iec-tion equipment manufacturers, grouped by equip-ment type. To identify the Sylvania projector lampneeded for a specific projector, all you need is thetype of pro.jector (e.g.: 8mm), the manufacturer'sname and the pro.jector model. With this informationin hand, turn to that manufacturer's listing, and theguide will do the rest. When ordering a replacement lamp from Sylvania, simply use its three-letter ANSI code (e.g.: CGT).Where projectors made by a single manufacturerare grouped with a single lamp type, all projectormodels within the group utilize the same lamp. Whereone or more projectors are grouped with several lamptypes, each projector model within the group cansafely use any of the lamps shown. The preferredlamp will generally be the one with the highest watt-age. While those of lower wattage will be satisfactorysubstitutes, they will produce somewhat lower screenbrilliance.
