    Course Outcomes:

    1. Use a problem solving approach to investigate and understand mathematical content.

    2. Use mathematical vocabulary, notation and structure to represent ideas, describerelationships, and model situations.

    3. Read and write presentations of mathematics with understanding.

    4. Use and analyze algorithms.5. Apply mathematical content and processes to model and solve problems from situations

    within and outside mathematics.

    6. Develop understanding of and appreciation for biographical and historical developmentof mathematics.

    Evaluation Procedures:

There will be four tests and a comprehensive final along with several weekly homeworkassignments. Some of the homework problems will be taken from the assigned list. On all

problems, you must show your work. No work, no credit (even for correct answers). This

applies to exams as well. There will be no make up exams. The final grade for the course will be

calculated in this fashion: Homework 30%, Tests 40%, Final 20%, Attendance 10%. If yourgrade on the final exam is higher than on one of your other test scores it will replace the lowest

    test score.

    Grading Scale:

    90-100% - A

    80-89.9% - B70-79.9% - C

    60-69.9% - D

    0-59% - F

    Homework:

Homework will be assigned, collected and graded on a regular basis. You are encouraged towork together on the homework, however the paper you turn in should reflect your personal

preparation. Homework assignments will usually be due two days after they are assigned.

    Arithmetic Skills Test:

Successful completion (14 correct out of 20) of the Arithmetic Skills Test is required for students

to receive a passing grade in Intermediate Algebra. The Arithmetic Skills Test will be

administered by each instructor periodically (at least three times) throughout the summer session.

    Attendance:

Instructors will take attendance daily. The role will be taken at the beginning of each class.Students must be in class when their name is called to be considered in attendance. Students are

also required to attend Math lab and individual student/teacher conferences on Friday up to 12

    noon.

    Support Services:

At the first sign of difficulty, students are encouraged to seek assistance from their instructor

during the posted office hours scheduled on Fridays.

    Classroom Conduct:

Students are expected to demonstrate respect for their classmates, their instructors and

themselves at all times. Disrespect will not be tolerated. Students are expected to turn off cellphones and ipods during class and attend to personal needs before class begins.

Academic Dishonesty:Students are expected to secure, read, and understand their rights and responsibilities relative to

academic honesty under the UMES Student Code of Conduct: Student Judiciary Manual

(http://www.umes.edu/students/UMESStudentCode2003.pdf). Any student that is found guilty ofacademic dishonesty such as cheating, plagiarism or collusion will receive the zero grade on

every test or assignment involved. Students may appeal the decision of their instructor. This will

require the instructor to register the incident formally to the Office of the Vice President for

Student Affairs in accordance with established University policy and procedure.
