Syllable Pockets and Practice Cards This resource was designed as a way to help children practice counting the syllables in words. To prepare: Copy the flash cards onto card stock and cut them apart. Cut out some file folders 3” by 4” and fold them in half to form the pocket and staple closed. Be sure to sta- ple them a bit “askew” to leave an opening so that it is easy for the children to in- sert the straws into the pockets! Then glue the small flash cards on to them. Cover them with clear packing tape for durability. You will also need to purchase 50 coffee stirrers or craft sticks to insert into the pockets, plus have a few extras on hand to cover those that may get lost. To get started: This is what I do: I tell the children that syllables are the parts of words, and I teach them the syllable song from Little Songs from Language Arts. Then I tell them that the secret to counting syllables is to rest their chin on their hands and feel their jaw move when they say a word naturally. I tell them just to say the word as they normally would, and feel their chin bounce. Then they should count the number of times their chin bumps their hands, and that will be the number of syllables in the word! To practice, cut the larger flash cards apart and have them practice saying the words while resting their chins on their hands, and counting the syllables as they feel their chins move. Then sort the pictures into groups by the numbers of sylla- bles each group has.
