SYDNEY’S BEST BEACHES FOR KIDS

BEST BEACHES, BATHS and OCEAN POOLS

A trip to the beach without children is an entirely different experience from a trip to the beach with your own personal

nippers in tow. The contrast is as sharp as that between Tamarama and Bronte beaches; short in distance but a huge leap apart in lifestyles. When the kids arrive, pack away the surfboard for a few years and dust off your old bucket and spade. Steer clear of the surf and settle into splashing in the shallows.

There are some wonderful watery places to explore around Sydney, places that are guaranteed to create cherished childhood memories. They can shape the way children relate to the natural world. The children’s seaside with rock pools, huge sandpits, ice creams and lashings of sunscreen is a special place and there are many, many ideal locations for all their junior beachbum needs.

Described in the following pages are the best of the beaches, baths and ocean pools for children. Most of the harbour and river baths are listed, these are splendid places to visit with kids, being safe and protected, usually with changing rooms and kiosks as well.

Some baths and pools charge an entry fee but they are very modest. Many beaches also have shower, toilet and change blocks, few of these have baby change tables, but in most there are benches wide enough to make a good change area. And most ocean beaches have an area of park beside them, known as a reserve. Some are just grassy strips, others are large grassed area with lots of trees and picnic tables.

Shade is a crucial factor when it comes to beaches, especially when very young babies are involved. Only a few beaches have shade over the sand,

Page 7: SYDNEY’S · SYDNEY’S BEST BEACHES FOR KIDS BEST BEACHES, BATHS and OCEAN POOLS A trip to the beach without children is an entirely different experience from a trip to the beach

7

SYDNEY’S BEST BEACHES FOR KIDS

those that do are noted in the text. They are very popular with parents and their patches of shaded sand seethe with gurgling babies and sandy young crawlers.

However most beaches have no shade and it is really only feasible for babies to spend any time on them under a shade tent. There are messages everywhere about the dangers of the sun, especially on the very delicate and fragile skin of young babies. So I will only add three words:Slip! Slap! Slop!

By the way, ‘baths’ usually means that there is a shark proof net enclosing a swimming area on a beach. ‘Ocean pools’ are either natural pools which have been adapted to make swimming pools or else concrete pools built alongside the beach.

Most ocean beaches are patrolled in summer by lifeguards, and the safe swimming areas are clearly marked by flags. It is imperative that children and parents swim between the flags. Some beaches listed here are not patrolled, but these are the shallower, non-surf and therefore safer beaches. Parents and carers of children need always to keep a sharp eye on their children, whether there are lifeguards or not.

Useful websitesMany councils have information about beaches on their websites. Pittwater Council is one example, you can find photos, information about the beaches and also lots of information on safety and sun protection on their Recreation—Beaches and Headlands section.

www.pittwater.nsw.gov.au

Visitors to Australia are particularly encouraged to look at the following websites which will explain and illustrate many important aspects of beach safety in Sydney.

www.beachsafe.org.auwww.ripcurrents.com.au

Beachwatch and HarbourwatchThese state government agencies monitor the pollution levels at all Sydney beaches. Sewage was once the major polluter, but nowadays stormwater runoff is the greatest concern. It is not advisable to swim at Harbour, Botany Bay and Georges River beaches and baths for at least three days after heavy rain.

For updated information on the pollution levels at all beaches contact the Beachwater and Harbourwatch Information Line on 1800 036 677, which gives daily updates on the state of the beaches.

Or check the daily updates on the Beachwatch and Harbourwatch website at www.epa.nsw.gov.au/ beach.

SYDNEY’S BEST BEACHES FOR KIDS

North of the harbourPalm Beach

Ocean RoadPalm Beach 2108

Palm Beach lies at the northernmost tip of the northern beaches peninsula. From Barrenjoey Point with its lighthouse, the beach sweeps southwards in a rose-gold crescent to the shops, cafes and facilities set below the million-dollar-home-encrusted headland.

The safest place for children to swim on this famous surf beach is at the southern end, known as Cabbage Tree Boat Harbour, where there is some shelter plus an ocean pool. Walking the length of the beach is very popular, as is picnicking on the strip of grass between the beach and Ocean Road.

There are two small areas of parkland at the southern end of Ocean Road, across the road from the beach, with picnic tables and short walks among the shady trees.

Cafes: Restaurant, cafe, takeaway and shops on Ocean Road

Toilets: A block with toilets, showers and change rooms on Ocean Road, opposite the

shops

Shade: None on the beach, some on the grassy strip provided by trees

Playground: Not at the beach itself but Governor Phillip Park at Barrenjoey Point has a

small, unenclosed playground area beside picnic tables and barbeques near the turn-off.

Ocean pool: A well-maintained pool at the southern end of the beach with change rooms,

shower and toilets. It is not very deep but it’s more an adult pool than a children’s one.

There are little rockpools nearby.

Shark net: No

Mum’s report: This is our favourite late afternoon or evening beach as there’s shade on

the sand and then at dusk the sky matches the sand’s rich colour. Stunning.

Extra: Scenic walk to the lighthouse from Barrenjoey Point, although it is too rough for

strollers.

Whale Beach

The StrandWhale Beach 2107

Very exclusive and very peaceful, Whale Beach has a pretty stretch of sand snuggled between two rocky headlands. There is a large reserve between the road and the beach.

This is a surf beach and the waves can be big, but there are calmer areas and the ocean pool and playground make it a popular beach for families.

Cafes: Restaurant and takeaway on The Strand

Toilets: Toilet block near the carpark

Shade: No shade on the beach itself but pine trees on the reserve provide plenty of shade

in the afternoons. There is some shade near the ocean pool from the cliffs.

Playground: The southern end of the reserve has a small playground with good play

equipment including slides, swings and sandplay equipment. Trees provide shade and

barbecues and picnic tables are close.

Ocean pool: Nice pool with some shallow rock-bottomed areas. A large, flat rock pool

beside the ocean pool fills at high tide and is a good place for children to splash around.

Shark net: No

Mum’s report: We prefer it to the larger Palm Beach and the kids love playing in the

rocky areas at both ends. Also, it’s great for barbecues on the beach as the playground

keeps the kids amused while we cook.

Avalon Beach

Barrenjoey RoadAvalon 2107

Avalon is a well known surf beach, beloved by locals and visited by surfers from far and wide. The surf lifesaving club is in a lovely old building on the beach. The swim-between-the-flags flags are generally set out in front of the SLSC.

At the southern end of the beach is the best spot for younger children. There are lots of rocks to explore and play amongst and there’s heaps of space on the sand to play. The rockpools are here too, there is a large rockpool and a smaller, shallow children’s

rockpool. Both are showing the years of wear and tear but they do the job very nicely

indeed.

Don’t be put off by the high wire fencing, it doesn’t look pretty but it is stopping rocks and stones from tumbling from the cliffs into the pools.

My children love splashing in the pools and even doing laps in the big pools. But their favourite place to play is amongst the nooks and crannies of the rocks. There are crabs to chase and stones to shift from one place to another. Often they have made friends with other kids and all worked together to build some magnificent structure. With added seaweed!

Cafe: Not at beach, but many lovely cafes just a stroll away in Avalon village.

Toilets: Yes, change rooms at SLSC

Shade: On reserve there is shade from trees, but little by rockpool or on sand until the

afternoon.

Rockpool: Yes

Playground: Yes, small play structure on the reserve

Mum’s Report: The combination of playing amongst the rocks and the rockpools and

swimming and splashing in the rockpool swimming pool itself make a visit here just lovely.

We rarely used to go to the beach itself to swim in the waves when the kids were little.

Now they are older they do go to the flags to boogie board. It won’t be long before they

are joining their dad out in the surf.

Parking: Car park in front of SLSC.

Bus Stop: Yes

Paradise Beach

Paradise AvenueAvalon 2107

A tiny and very beautiful beach on peaceful Pittwater with lovely views over to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. A netted swimming enclosure takes up half the beach and there’s lots of shallow water for splashing.

The road runs above the beach so there’s hardly any traffic, which makes this beach a really safe and secure little hideaway, ideal for those who do not mind a lack of facilities and cafes.

Cafes: No

Toilets: No

Shade: Some on the beach in the morning from trees

Mum’s report: The rows of dinghies, little boathouses and the yachts bobbing just

Clareville Beach

Delecta AvenueClareville 2107

A long, tranquil and very safe beach to bring small children. Clareville has a narrow sweep of sand and lots of shallow water to play in. There is a lush, grassy reserve behind with plenty of shady trees and much of it at a safe distance from the carpark.

It is easy to push strollers along the reserve to find a good spot. There are also picnic tables and a barbecue but they are directly beside the carpark.

Cockatoos screech and flap around, the views over Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park are wonderful, and the little people toddle, dig and splash paying no attention whatsoever to the bigger picture.

Cafes: No

Toilets: Toilet block in the carpark plus open showers by the carpark

Shade: Trees provide some shade on the sand in the mornings. Lots of shade on the

reserve.

Collaroy Beach

Pittwater RoadCollaroy 2097

Collaroy Beach and Narrabeen Beach are one long stretch of lovely honey-coloured sand which often has a big surf. Collaroy Beach is the southern end. There is a fantastic fenced playground beside the carpark. Beside it, the beach is a nice wide expanse of sand to play on. However, the surf is often big and the flags tend to be further down the beach so it is not necessarily a good swimming spot in itself.

At the southern headland, along the promenade, is a large adult ocean pool and beside it a shallower toddler pool. Just south of them is a sheltered patch of beach ideal for young children. It is easy to push a pram along to these pools and little beach and there is plenty of space for changing and sitting.

Cafes: Some nearby on Pittwater Road

Toilets: There are public toilets, showers and change rooms at the surf-lifesaving club just

north of the carpark, entrance on the Pittwater Road side of the building.

Shade: None at the pools or on the beach, but plenty in the playground and park area

Playground: Yes

Ocean pool: Adult and children’s pools

Shark net: No

Nanny’s report: A fabulous spot which is well worth making an expedition to visit. The

southern end is a little wonderland for children and the playground is really good.

Dee Why Beach

The StrandDee Why 2099

Dee Why is a famous surf beach and there are usually surfers out looking for waves to catch. The beach is long, with a reserve and a small promenade which is easily accessible for strollers. The flags are usually out in front of the surf lifesaving club on the beach, but the best spot for little tiddlers is down at the extreme southern end by the point at the two ocean pools.

One of the pools is designed just for children, it’s well kept with plenty of shallow water for splashing around. This toddler pool is one of the best in Sydney. It’s easy to push a stroller along to the pool and there’s plenty of space to sit down and to change.

Cafes: Several cafes on The Strand, opposite the beach

Toilets: Toilets, showers and change rooms at the northern end of the surf lifesaving club;

toilets at the ocean pools; and groovy open showers on the promenade

Shade: None on the beach or at the pools, but shade from trees on the reserve

Playground: Excellent, fenced playground at south end of the reserve near rock pool

Ocean pool: Yes, adult and children’s pools

Shark net: No

Mum’s report: The children’s rockpool is delightful and generally in immaculate

condition; we spend loads of time there and would stay all day if there was a bit of shade.

The views from the rockpool are just wonderful. What we usually do is spend the morning

at the pool and then eat lunch in the shade at the playground.

Extra: The James Meehan Reserve playground is close by.

South Curl Curl Beach

Carrington ParadeCurl Curl 2096

Curl Curl is a classic northern beaches ocean beach, backed by scrub-covered sand dunes with a reserve behind the dunes. The great thing for children here is the huge ocean pool which is a short, easy walk along a path from the carpark. The pool is divided into a lap section and a shallower section for children, and there’s a large rock platform in the pool. Nearby on the beach are rocky areas that are excellent for exploring. The beach is also fairly sheltered at this end.

Cafes: Kiosk and cafe at South Curl Curl Surf Lifesaving Club.

Toilets: Toilet, shower and change block at clubhouse and also at the ocean pool

Shade: None on the beach, one bench under shade by the ocean pool

Freshwater Beach

Kooloora AvenueHarbord 2096

Freshwater is a popular beach for young families and a favourite spot for preschoolers during the week. It’s a surf beach with safe shallow areas for splashing and sometimes there are sandbars that protect parts of the beach. Nonetheless, as ever, it’s vital to swim only between the flags.

Set between two rocky headlands, Freshwater Beach feels compact and enclosed. Behind the scrub-covered dunes is a nice reserve with shaded picnic tables, electric barbecues and a playground.

Cafes: Kiosk and nearby is Pilu cafe which is terrific

Toilets: Toilet block at the surf lifesaving club and toilets at the swimming club building by

the rockpool

Shade: None on the beach

Playground: On the reserve

Ocean pool: Yes, at the northern end of the beach.

Manly Beach

South Steyne

Manly 2095

Manly Beach is the southern end of a spectacular, vast crescent of sandy beach. The northern end is called Queenscliff Beach and North Steyne Beach is in the middle.

Manly is a world famous surf beach, which is just another way of saying that it is not the one most suitable for your precious younger children. It is vital to only use the area between the flags.

One can always just enjoy the views at Manly Beach, the surfers, travellers and all, and then walk down the path along the seafront to the more child-friendly Shelly Beach.

On sunny summer days it is possible to hire umbrellas, deckchairs, boogie boards and surfboards on Manly beach.

Cafes: Many along South Steyne, kiosk at surf lifesaving club

Toilets: Toilets, change and shower block at the Tourist Information Centre, with parents’

room and disabled toilet. The same are found at the surf lifesaving club at the very

southern end of the beach.

Shade: Plenty on the beach in the afternoon from the famous pine trees, plus shade on

the reserve

Playground: Small play area just north of the Tourist Information Centre on the promenade

Ocean pool: Fairy Bower is a lovely pool just a short walk away along Marine Parade

which leads to Shelly Beach. There’s no shade at Fairy Bower.

Shark net: No

Mum’s report: The buzz of this beach is great, we always enjoy a spot of people

watching. Accessibility by ferry is a huge plus and makes it part of a day out, along with

the small play area in the Corso.

Extra: Oceanworld Manly is close. A long stroller walk along the promenade here is

always a treat, it’s also good for bikes and trikes.

Shelly Beach

Bower StreetManly 2095

An excellent beach for the under fives, being quite sheltered, small and at a safe distance from the road. There is even some shade on the beach itself and the rocky patches at each end of the beach are excellent for mini-explorers.

The small reserve has shady trees and is good for a picnic. Paths and steps lead through the bush to a lookout, but this is not a route for strollers. There are marvellous views along the great crescent of the Queenscliff, North Steyne and Manly beaches. The hungry and thirsty have a couple of nice options as well.

Cafes: Le Kiosk is a restaurant on Shelly Beach which welcomes children. Beside it is a

beach kiosk with shaded tables and chairs.

Toilets: Toilet, shower and change block by the kiosk

Shade: Some on the beach from cliffs on the eastern side, plus shade on the reserve from

trees

Playground: No

Ocean pool: Beautiful Fairy Bower ocean pool is a short walk away down Marine Parade

Shark net: No

Mum’s report: Absolutely gorgeous—we love it. The kids are always in sight and can’t

wander too far. They can cycle their trikes down to the rockpool too. Shelly is much more

child-friendly than its big brother surf beach at Manly.

Extra: Lots to do in Manly, the promenade goes from Shelly to Queenscliff beach and is

divine

The harbourLittle Manly Cove

Stuart StreetManly 2095

You know a beach is top for tots when there’s a toddler-sized toilet in the change block. Little Manly Cove has a compact beach below the level of the road and a small reserve between the road and the beach.

The swimming enclosure takes up half the beach and its shallow waters are generally awash with babies, toddlers and older children.

There is shade on the sand in the mornings and the rocky ledges on the southern end of the beach are good for exploring. The kiosk can provide food and drink, the views over the eastern suburbs and Mosman are provided gratis.

Cafes: Kiosk is open daily in summer and some weekends in winter, weather dependent

Toilets: Showers, toilets and changing block by the kiosk

Shade: Some on the beach, a little on the reserve. This is an unusual Sydney beach in that

it faces west, so it can be very hot in the afternoon.

Playground: Two swings only but Little Manly Point playground is a walk away, up lots of

steps

Shark net: Yes

Mum’s report: Great in the mornings and late afternoons, and small enough to let the

children wander freely. It works well for me as my older children adore leaping into the

water from the baths area... and so do I!

Castle Rock Beach

Ogilvy RoadBalgowlah Heights 2093

Not for faint-heated, and definitely not for strollers, Castle Rock Beach is at the bottom of a long flight of steps that is steep at parts and has precipitous drops at the sides.

But at the bottom is a lovely little beach with a real castaway feel even though it is directly opposite Balmoral and Chinaman’s beaches.

A tiny waterfall tinkles, huge boulders scatter the pocket-handkerchief of sand and there is a rocky area to explore. There are no facilities and the beach is rarely crowded.

Clontarf Beach

Sandy Bay RoadClontarf 2093

A safe and popular spot, most young children will be found splashing in the sea or digging in the sand at the pool enclosure in front of the reserve.

Clontarf has nice views of the Spit with its busy boats and cars racing over the bridge. There are big shady trees on the reserve where parents and carers can spread blankets and towels and easily keep an eye on children in the pool enclosure.

The beach and reserve are a safe distance from the carpark behind. The playground is good and has a ship theme, with plenty of shade. There are showers by the pool enclosure.

Balmoral Beach

The EsplanadeBalmoral 2088

A magical, enchanted place for kids with lots of different areas to play and swim, including an island, parkland, playground, rockpools, the promenade, an old rotunda and the beautiful Bathers’ Pavilion.

Balmoral has a long stretch of beach with sheltered waters and very pretty views to North Head. In fact, Balmoral has two beaches: Balmoral itself which is the sweep of golden sand south of Rocky Point (usually known as ‘the island’), and Edwards Beach to the north. A wide promenade runs along a large portion of the two beaches and is lovely for a stroll and for bike riding.

Many children start their Balmoral adventures at the enclosed and very safe baths area which is at the southern end, by the carpark. They then graduate to the wider expanses of sand in the middle of the two big beaches and also south of the baths. Next the rockpools at the northernmost end are explored with their fish, shells and anemones.

The park area at Edwards Beach, between the Bathers’ Pavilion and the Beach Club, has picnic tables as does the grassy area south of the baths. The beautiful spreading branches of the ancient native fig trees cast plenty of shade over these areas and over the grassy strip between the road and the promenade.

The baths area at the southern end is especially good for babies and young toddlers as there is some shade on the sand itself. There is also lots of shade from trees over the beach south of the baths, especially in the afternoon. There is plenty of space to change and to sit on the stepped seating. Strollers can be easily pushed down to the beach. The baths area is enclosed and has a wooden boardwalk running round it. Kids love to run around under the boardwalk.

The playground here has some excellent equipment on rubber softfall. The playground is not enclosed but there is fencing alongside the road.

Cafes: Numerous and assorted cafes on the Esplanade, Boatshed Cafe by the sea at the

baths and the excellent fish and chip shop on the corner of Raglan Street

Toilets: Three public toilets along the seafront: changing rooms, showers and toilets

at the baths; changing rooms, showers and toilets in the north-western corner of the

Bathers’ Pavilion; toilet block on the Esplanade a little south of the bridge to Rocky Point.

Morella RoadClifton Gardens 2088

One of the loveliest harbour beaches, a long slim stretch of sand with a lengthy jetty, a swimming enclosure, a playground and a large reserve behind.

From the beach there are wonderful views over to Neilsen Park and the eastern suburbs, as well as the constant buzz of the harbour with the Manly ferries ploughing by.

Rocky bush-covered headlands enclose each end of the beach with bush behind, so the birdlife is plentiful and one feels far away from the big smoke.

The swimming enclosure covers one-half of the beach, the other half is open and often cleaner. The jetty is used by fishermen and is a lovely area for children to explore with their parents.

The large and flat reserve has lots of lovely trees, picnic tables, an excellent playground and space for games, bikes and general zooming around. The carpark is at one side of the reserve and there is no other road so this is a very safe place for kids.

Cafes: Kiosk

Toilets: Yes, with change rooms and showers

Shade: Trees on reserve, plus some shade from the cliffs at the eastern end of the beach

Greenwich Baths

A divine little hideaway at the end of Greenwich Point with fabulous views to the city skyscrapers and to Birchgrove. Greenwich Baths has a small beach with a netted swimming enclosure, plus grassy areas, barbecue and picnic tables.

The beach is especially good for babies and toddlers as a large tree throws shade over the sand. There is plenty of space for paddling and splashing on the gently sloping beach. The sand is kept clean and the water is remarkably clear, though not after heavy rain. Note that at high tide most of the sand is under water. You can phone the baths to check the time of high tide.

All in all, Greenwich Baths is a lovely spot for kids, its only drawbacks being the steps which are a struggle with a stroller. However it is possible to push the stroller down and up the steep grassy slope at the side of the steps. The baths are supervised by lifeguards.

Cafes: Kiosk sells hot and cold snacks and drinks

Toilets: Change rooms, showers and toilets, also open showers by the beach

Shade: Some from trees, plus umbrellas over picnic tables

Playground: Swings in the small park above the baths

Shark net: Yes

Mum’s report: A good place for mums to relax. The baths is safe and small enough to

keep the kids in sight while I enjoy a cake and a coffee. There’s a nice, easy atmosphere

and kids all tend to share their beach toys. Greenwich Baths’ only drawback is that it can

Built in the 1880s, Sydney’s oldest swimming pool is part of the harbour but is completely enclosed by its elegant green and cream two-storey classical buildings, wooden fences and decking.

There is a 50 metre lap swimming section, a small, shallow beach area (except at high tide), lots of unshaded decking for sunbakers and shaded seating areas.

A leaflet about the pool amusingly described it as ‘one of the most beautiful pools in the world ... renovated and preserved for future generations. But why let them have all the fun? Come and enjoy the pool now!’

Cafes: Some drinks and ice creams sold at entrance

Toilets: Toilets, showers and changing rooms in the main building

Seven Shillings Beach and Redleaf Pool

Mervyn AvenueDouble Bay 2028Website: www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au

Seven Shillings Beach is a thin strip of sand with fabulous views of the millionaires’ playgrounds of Darling Point and Point Piper. At the western end of the beach is Redleaf Pool, a large swimming enclosure. The beach itself has no direct road access and so is very safe from cars, but the water can sometimes be a bit weedy. Above the high watermark the beach is owned by the residents of the humungous houses lining the beach, so visitors must keep below that line.

Redleaf Pool is very large and has boardwalks, facilities and a kiosk. There are two large floating pontoons in the pool, a narrow strip of beach and grassy areas shaded by large trees. The pool can be accessed by walking through Blackburn Gardens beside Woollahra Library. There are steps between the changing rooms and the pool itself. The pool has no lifeguards, it can be very busy on hot summer days.

Cafes: Kiosk on the terrace above Redleaf Pool, opening hours depend on weather. There

are tables and chairs with space for prams on the terrace by the kiosk.

Toilets: Toilets, change and shower at Redleaf Pool, and open-air shower by the pool

Shark Beach

Neilsen ParkGreycliffe AvenueVaucluse 2030

Shark Beach should really be known as Sharkproof Beach since a swimming enclosure embraces most of it. This is a fantastic family beach with beautiful rocky, bushy headlands and clean creamy-coloured sand. There are marvellous views towards Mosman and Manly.

Neilsen Park is part of Sydney Harbour National Park. Its vast, ancient fig trees look like gargantuan bearded beings from a past era, but they do provide lots of shade and there are picnic tables beneath them. Sounds blissful? It is, and thus it gets murderously packed out on hot summer weekends and holidays.

Cafes: Neilsen Park Kiosk is a restaurant with stunning views which has a kiosk selling

snacks, salads, pies, ice creams and cold drinks. There are a few tables and chairs outside.

A gem, a diamond, a jewel! This big rectangle of emerald lawn and the tawny beach by the sparkling sapphire sea are a delight for local families.

There is a playground, a kiosk and walking tracks (with steps) through the bush. An extra attraction for the young is the bridge over the water linking The Crescent and Fitzwilliam Street. It can be accessed from the beach by steps and provides a safe thrill for those who love walking over water.

Parsley Bay is a narrow finger of water with a shark net across the entrance. There is excellent snorkelling in the bay and tropical fish can be seen in summer. The Big Daddy of beaches with something to offer the littlest sons and daughters of Sydney. Bondi is a surf beach of course and can be a bit wild for the faint-hearted, plus there’s the hordes of tourists to contend with.

The children’s pool at the southern end, however, is always a safe haven for the under fives. It is a lovely pool with a shallow end for splashing and a huge mosaic mural of aquatic creatures along the wall beside the pool. Waves will sometimes break over this pool. Unfortunately there is no shade. It’s easy to wheel a stroller along the path to the pool. There are shaded picnic tables and a barbecue across the promenade.

Tamarama Beach

Tamarama Marine Drive, Tamarama

Tamarama Beach is a little stunner. Just around the headland south of Bondi, it’s nestled between cliffs and is stunningly beautiful.

Now then, small confession, it’s not actually the best beach for children at all. There are safer beaches nearly. In fact, Tamarama has a reputation as a place where the Beautiful People hang out, earning it the nickname ‘Glamarama.’

It’s also got the reputation for having good surf, but with tricky rips and shifting sandbars.

However, there’s a playground at the rear of Tamarama now, and it has wide grassy spaces for running and a good kiosk. So if you find yourself there with the kids, just stay within the flags, enjoy the reserve and the playground and that essential coffee and ice block, and you’ll have a lovely time.

If you’re not familiar with surf beaches, please please, please be especially careful at Tamarama… swim ONLY between the flags!

There is plenty of space around the pool to stretch out and plenty of shade there are well. But this whole area consists of concrete and rock and so can be hard on the knees of crawlers and on learner walkers and speedy toddlers.

the view, explore the rocky edges of the point, play on the beach, and bring your own

food or use the fairly good selection of takeaways.

Extra: La Perouse Museum is very close, and historic Bare Island Fort; both are part of

Botany Bay National Park.. The Snakemen of La Perouse does snake shows on Sundays

Kyeemagh Baths

General Holmes DriveBrighton-Le-Sands 2216

These baths are at the northern end of Lady Robinson Beach which stretches down to Dolls Point and has several baths dotted along it. The beach is not very wide, but slopes gently and is great for kids.

The added advantage at this end of the beach is the wide expanse of the reserve, known as Cook Park, and the great views of the planes as they take off and land at the airport.

There are two playgrounds here as well, plus picnic tables and barbecues. The only pity is that there is not a huge amount of shade.

Cafe: No

Toilets: Shower, toilet and change block in the reserve

Shade: Not on the beach, some on the reserve

Playground: Yes

Mum’s report: The parts of Cook Park which are near the road have secure fencing so

the park is safe. We bring the bikes to ride along the seafront on the bike track that runs

all the way south alongside Botany Bay. With the baths and the playgrounds, we can

make a day of it.

Dolls Point Baths

Peter Depena ReserveRussell AvenueDolls Point 2219

Dolls Point is at the southern end of the Lady Robinsons Beach, which runs the entire length of Botany Bay from Brighton-le-Sands.

Cook Park is the name of the reserve that runs alongside the beach and turns into the very large Peter Depena Reserve. Most of the reserve is fenced and has coin-operated barbecues.

The gently sloping beach has a small swimming enclosure so it’s safe for little swimmers and paddlers. There is an extensive playground in the reserve with swings, scale swing, seesaw and large play structure with twist climbers, wobble bridge and twist slides.

Cafe: The Beach Hut restaurant in the reserve has highchairs and a children’s menu. There

is also a kiosk

Toilets: Toilet block in the reserve

Shade: No shade on the beach but quite a bit from the trees on the reserve and some

shaded seating too

Carss Park Baths

Carwar AvenueCarss Park 2221

A great favourite with families and one of the best all-round places in the southern suburbs. Carrs Bush Park is a large and very attractive bushland area with a netted tidal baths.

The kids can splash and swim around very safely. The park itself is impeccably maintained with on-site rangers keeping things up to scratch.

There is an extensive, modern playground, a long bike and walking track, beautiful mature trees in abundance and a huge amount of open space. There are plenty of tables and benches, many shaded, plus barbecues and even a cafe!

Cafe: Carss Park Cafe and Grill is good and right beside the playground

Toilets: Two toilet blocks, one with showers

Shade: None over the baths but plenty from trees and over much of the seating in the

park

Playground: Yes, a very good one

Mum’s report: You could take a wide range of ages to this park and keep them occupied

all day. I’ll be going back! A wonderful, peaceful feel created by water, trees and boats,

and yet combined with so many activities.

Como Baths

Como Pleasure GroundsCremona RoadComo 2226Phone: 9528 2768Open: Call for times. Closed in winter. Free.

Como Baths has a proper swimming pool set in the Pleasure Grounds and surrounded by a high fence, and a swimming enclosure in the Georges River which has a beach, boardwalk and lanes. Both have lovely views over the river and children enjoy watching the trains chug over Como bridge.

At the swimming pool there is shade cloth over some benches but no shade over the pool itself. This is a popular spot for young children and their carers and often gets quite busy.

In the Pleasure Grounds are picnic tables and barbecues, plus the playground, making this a lovely spot for a swim, walk, picnic and play on a summer day.

Cafes: Kiosk

Toilets: Toilet block beside the pool

Shade: Shade cloth over benches near the pool

South Cronulla Beach

Gerrale StreetCronulla 2230

A smaller and more sheltered beach than Cronulla itself with flat rocky areas at each end. There are beach areas by the ocean pools so there is somewhere safe for the children to play even when the surf is big.

The large expanse of Cronulla Park between the road and the beach also makes this a fine family spot.

There is a good but small playground and plenty of space for picnics. The views over Bate Bay are pretty, blighted only by the smokestacks of Kurnell.

Cafes: Cafe by the surf club.

Toilets: Showers, toilets and change areas in the surf lifesaving club

Shade: None on the beach but plenty in Cronulla Park

Playground: Small playground in Cronulla Park

Ocean pool: Two pools a short stroll north along the esplanade, one has a beach area

and is good for children—no shade though

Mum’s report: Shelly Beach and Baths are better for the kids but the family comes here

to have lunch in the cafe as well as play on the beach

and Flinders Point stroller walk (see Sydney for Under Fives). Cronulla Sports Complex on

the seafront has an indoor pool.

Shelly Beach and Baths

Shelly ParkEwos ParadeCronulla 2230

The best swimming spot on the ocean side of Cronulla for younger children is undoubtedly the lovely ocean pool at the southern end of Shelly Beach.

A smooth path leads all the way down to the rockpool and there’s a wheelchair ramp into the water itself.

The ocean pool has a beach entry and plenty of shallow water for splashing around. The pool is clean and large and in good repair.

The small patch of beach beside the pool is sheltered and usually packed with children playing with their sand toys. Shelly Beach itself is small and pretty.

Cafes: BYO or milk bar across road.

Toilets: Toilets, shower and change room in pavilion on seafront

Shade: Not on the beach or ocean pool but plenty in the park

Playground: Good, fenced playground in Shelly Park

Mum’s report: This is a mecca for Cronulla kids. The large park and great playground

make this the first place to try out if you visit Cronulla with kids.

Extra: The Cronulla to Bass and Flinders Point stroller walk (see Sydney for Under Fives)

Gunnamatta Beach and Baths

Gunnamatta ParkNicholson ParadeCronulla 2230

Great little spot on the peaceful and calm waters of Gunnamatta Bay with splendid views. This is a flat sandy beach with a large swimming enclosure, a boardwalk and a separate section with lane markings.

There are plenty of shallows for the little ones to play in and the road is far away. The promenade is good for bike riding.

This is a handy spot if you are travelling to Cronulla by train as it is the closest beach to the station.

Cafes: BYO

Toilets: Toilet block beside the playground

Shade: Not on the beach, but shade from trees in Gunnamatta Park

Playground: Large one in Gunnamatta Park

Shark net: Yes

Mum’s report: Gunnamatta Beach and Baths is a safe and relaxing surf-free spot in

SYDNEY’S BEST BEACHES FOR KIDS

S EANA SMITH was born in Edinburgh and studied Latin, Greek and scuba-diving at Oxford University. Arriving in Sydney in

1987 with her snorkel, flippers and a great deal of youthful energy, she began a TV career working on The Midday Show with Ray Martin and later worked as a producer of children’s television with the BBC. None of this study or work prepared her at all for the great task of motherhood.

Seana’s under fives adventures began in 1997 with the birth of her first son. Son number two arrived in 1999 and then there was a blur for a few years.

For some strange reason a third child seemed like a good idea but fate intervened and boy-girl twins were born in 2006. Oops.

The family lives in the suburbs of Sydney, where the parents are totally outnumbered, outclassed and outgunned by the four jet-propelled children.
