Primary Functions •The nervous system is a complex collection of nerves and specialized cells known as neurons that transmit signals between different parts of the body. It is essentially the body’s electrical wiring.

Terminology •Meninges- protective membranous coverings for the central nervous system•Cerebrum- main part of the brain consisting of two cerebral hemispheres; largest part of the brain in mammals •Cranial nerve- nerve that arises from the brain •Nerve impulse- action potential traveling along a neuron •Spinal nerve- nerve that arises from the spinal cord
