Job Description Job Title Switchgear Design Engineer Company Lucy Switchgear (EMS) Ltd Business Area Engineering Location Thame Reporting To Engineering Programme Manager Date of Issue July 2013 Job Purpose The main purpose of the role will be to support projects on new product development with resource allocated by Engineering Programme Manager in collaboration with the Laboratory and Industrialisation team. The job holder will bring their professional expertise and knowledge as a subject expert in all aspects of Medium Voltage Switchgear. This is a new role and the job holder will be required to bring their professional knowledge to support the growth and development of the Engineering Department to meet the future demands from our customers. Key Accountabilities: 1. To lead design and development of Medium voltage switchgear projects. 2. To design considering manufacturing and assembly processes and techniques (DFMA) 3. To design with process, part and assembly costs kept to a minimum, without compromising the integrity of new switchgear products. 4. To prepare internal/external testing schedules and, where necessary, supervise internal/external testing as required, both in the UK and abroad, working in collaboration with the Laboratories team. 5. To assist with the design engineering aspects of test unit builds and pre-production builds for new product development. 6. To ensure maintenance of all test results relating to relevant projects. 7. To ensure design documentation and design project files are kept up to date. 8. To ensure finished product has full BOM in line with Lucy Switchgear requirements. 9. To seek and promote new processes and technologies which will enhance the economics of the finished product. 10. To provide technical support to other parts of the business. Dimensions: 1. The role will be based at Thame in the UK. Visits to, Lucy offices and customers in UK and overseas locations will also be required. Secondary Activities / Tasks 1. To undertake any other duties and responsibilities as required / instructed in order to maintain and / or improve the efficiency, quality and service provided by the Engineering Department. 2. Health & Safety – adherence to all Company Health & Safety Policies, Procedures and Safe Working Practices.

  • Experience Knowledge & Skills Essential Desirable Functional Competencies

    Experience in design of Medium voltage switchgear

    Experience as technical project leader or technical expert.

    Extensive knowledge in dielectric performance in air and SF6

    Extensive knowledge of temperature rise in SF6

    Knowledge of Vacuum (circuit breaker and switch)

    Knowledge of capacitive switching in vacuum (circuit breaker)

    Understanding of relevant IEC standards (i.e. 62271)

    Sound mechanical Engineering experience

    Knowledge of beam theory and analysis techniques.

    Experience of interlock design

    Ability to demonstrate success in driving projects to meet targets and deadlines.

    Basic knowledge of Risk management

    Experience in mechanical drive design

    Knowledge of kinematic software simulation

    Knowledge on FEA software (Ansys, Nastran)

    Knowledge of material properties

    Knowledge and experience of Lean manufacturing

    Experience of Welding process Experience of Thermoset and

    Thermoplastic moulding. Extended knowledge of Risk

    management Knowledge and experience of

    CAD 2D/3D packages

    Understanding of switchgear protection and automation systems

    Behavioural competencies

    Other Requirements

    Degree level qualification in mechanical /electrical engineering or equivalent experience.

    Experience as a Trainer for technical subjects
