The approach taken to establish the most popular Swiss Army knives was to data mine and analysetrends and information derived from the internet and the renowned Amazon Marketplace. Theinternet and online purchase indicators may not prove to be the most exhaustive and accuratesource of information as Swiss Army knives are readily available and most often purchased in stores,however, Internet sales are rapidly increasing and competing with traditional sales.

Trends established from online marketing and sales intelligence from internet purchasing outlets ofSwiss Army knives may provide sufficiently representative information to demonstrate accuratecustomer leanings and ultimately reigning preferences amongst the public.

Azon Spy

The data to be used in this analysis was obtained from the Amazon marketplace via the Amazonwebsite directly for the product descriptions and images, but the broader product data extractionand trend analysis was done with the use of the third party software application, Azon Spy. The dataobtained from the above source was further interrogated with the use of Microsoft Excel.

The use of the application Azon Spy provided records in the following data fields:

Salesrank AuniquenumberissuedbyAmazonallocatedaccordingtoasecretalgorithmsignifyingthepopularityofaproduct.Thelowerthenumberthemoresales.Everynumberisunique,whichmeansitemsofequalsalesvolumeshaveadditionalcriteriaappliedtotheirrank.

For this purpose the following fields were considered for data interrogation:

Sales Rank

These records are indicative of sales volumes on the Amazon marketplace. Every item has a uniquenumber allocated indicative of number of sales and various trending factors, which impact on theitem. The lower the number the more popular or successful the product, however, no two items canhave the same sales rank irrespective of having the same number of sales.

Amazon allocates this number across categories based on a number of influences and relationshipsbetween products that affects its popularity. The formula or algorithm for calculating the sales rankis not publicly known and neither as the exact sales volumes.

Despite the reigning assumption that the lower sales rank of a number of products is indicative ofgreater sales volume, this rank is not used as a sole gauge of popularity. Reasons for not placing fullconfidence in this number includes the fact that similar products may have been featured indifferent categories and as a result competes with dissimilar items and as a result the sales rank maynot be comparative.

List Price

The prices listed on Amazon marketplace varies significantly with numerous discounts and specialoffers applied. The List price of an item or full retail price is either the industry accepted price or theprice suggested by the supplier or manufacturer.

The sales data results display the list price despite the possibility that a considerable discount is ineffect at that time and that the listed sales price may never have been they full payable price for anyitem. These records do, however, serve as a good indication of the retail cost of a product and as acomparative ratio between similar products.

This field also only serves as a guideline as discounts or mark downs could have been appliedinconsistently at any time, which would remove any correlation between goods prices and renderprice comparisons ineffective if this was the case.

Average Rating

The average rating of a product on the Amazon marketplace is a good indication of how the publicthat have purchased a product feel about the quality of the item. Only buyers get the opportunity to




rate an item for a period of 90 days from date of purchase. In this rating system a score between 0and 5 can be allocated, where a 5 is best and lower numbers decreasing in value. The average scoreis calculated from all the ratings received from the public.

The average rating is a good standard of measurement for the quality of a product, with a highernumber being indicative a customer satisfaction. The failings of this system are like any statisticalsample easily skewed by inconsistent sample sizes. An example is if a product is only rated by one ora few customers and the average results are decidedly good or bad, this may not compareadequately with a larger sample, where the goods and bads are better represented in a larger poolof customers rating the products.

Another shortfall of this system is that ratings done by customers may not be consistent in meaningand value. This could be the case if a person who is very happy with his purchase would rate theitem 5 without a moment’s hesitation, yet a more critical customer rates an excellent quality item asa four instead of a five, even though he may be equally thrilled with the product.

Number of reviews

Number of Reviews of an Amazon product is also a very good source of information on a productand should be considered in conjunction with the Average rating described above. A review in itselfmay be either good or bad or simply informative, but a high number of reviews coupled with strongaverage ratings are sound statistical estimates of customer satisfaction.

In similar fashion to the average rating too few either good or bad reviews may not adequatelydescribe an item and additionally not all customers would bother to review a purchase for thebenefit of others. Another problem with considering a large number of reviews may be that somepeople would only leave negative reviews and not positive. For this reason it is advisable to considerone data field which may indicate the popularity of an item together with other indicators to get abetter picture.

Use of Azon Spy

A search was conducted using software programme, Azon Spy running the keyword: “Swiss ArmyKnife”. The search parameters were specified to list 100 products ranging in price between $20 and$500 from any category listed in the Amazon marketplace.

To complement and expand on the above search results additional searches were run for the keywords “Victorinox knife” and “Wenger knife”. As was the case previously, the search parameterswere specified to list 100 products ranging in price between $20 and $500 from any category listedin the Amazon marketplace.

The search results were combined in a spreadsheet and duplicated entries created by the threesearch results were eliminated. The records were further refined by tagging the results with either




Victorinox knife or Wenger knife, which are the only manufacturers that may lay claim to the titleSwiss Army knife. Both these companies presently have a 50% market share in supplying the SwissArmy with knives. Victorinox refers to their knives as the “Original Swiss Army Knife” and Wengerrefers to the “Genuine Swiss Army Knife”.

Any records not referring to products from the above manufacturers were removed, as was the casewith merchandise that was neither a knife nor more specifically a Swiss Army Knife. Both Wengerand Victorinox have a broad range of products beyond Swiss Army Knives, such as watches, chefknives and cutlery. The remaining data was displayed in an Excel Spread sheet to be analysed for thepurposes of extracting summary information and emerging trends.

The Sales rank of all the line items were chronologically numbered from lowest to highest. Thelowest sales rank was allocated a 1 and every following number irrespective of its value wasallocated the following sequential number in increments of 1. This data range did not have anyduplication as the Amazon Sales rank is a unique number.

The same process was then followed for both Victorinox knives and Wenger knives, individually inorder to produce the top ranking sales rank within these brand names. This was done, because bothcompanies’ knives are referred to as Swiss Army knives, but because of increased loyalty and brandrecognition one companies wares may dominate over the other despite the fact that the lesserknown company also has staunch following.

The results of the sales rank exercise were then further thinned out to produce a list of the top tenof all knives in the range and also those of the individual manufacturers, Victorinox and Wenger.These three lists would produce an overlap of certain items as the sub categories in this test areinclusive of the whole, yet each test also revealed unique results.

The Average Rating of the products played a significant role in the selection process as it reflectedthe votes from the public subsequent to a purchase. For the very same reason a review is consideredas a vote of confidence regardless of whether the review was positive or negative.

Unlike the average rating where only the top 10 best ratings were considered, any written reviewwas counted as favourable regardless of content, because as they say: “there’s no such thing as badpublicity.” In the case of reviews the top ten of most reviews were considered.

The favourable indications that the data from the Amazon marketplace revealed made someconvincing representations of the popularity of certain knives within their respective categories or asa whole. The filtering process become even more convincing when considering the top knivesscoring the most accolades added together from separate tests run on them in a matrix.

The performance testing of the individual brands of Swiss Army knives was taken one step further toevaluate the popularity of the search terms comprised of the accepted title of the Swiss Army knifeon the internet.

Any search conducted by the public may provide insight into an interest in a particular product, butdoes not in itself serve as hard evidence of purchases or ownership of a given knife brand. Highsearch volumes of a keyword indicative of a certain brand of knife in support of pre-existinginformation supporting the popularity of one brand of Swiss Army knife over another is consideredto tip the scale in favour of a relevant product.

The list price field was also considered to be important as a deciding factor in the purchase of a SwissArmy knife. Despite the fact that the list price is not necessarily indicative of the true cost of the itemor that this data does not reflect the number of purchases or popularity, it was considered to be astrong factor in the decision of purchasing one product over the other.

The list price was also ranked according to all items and those from the respective manufacturersindividually and the top ten from each category was extracted. The indicated prices, as opposed tothe unique sales rank, could feature duplications and it was for this reason that the top ten itemsalso included duplicated items and as a result have more than ten products per category.

The list price analysis was further expanded to include premium priced, the more expensive items,and the cheaper range. The heavily price tagged items to some customers may indicate greaterquality whereas the more affordable merchandise also has a strong target market. Both cheaper andmore expensive items considered to desirable in their own right and extracted for display.

Market Samurai

Google is considered the largest and most widely used and trusted search engine. Market Samurai isa keyword analysis tool, which is based on the Google Keyword tool architecture, is used to reviewthe worldwide search trends on the Google search engine by extracting the performance ofkeywords over time.

The sample of Swiss Army knives obtained from the Amazon marketplace with the use of Azon Spy,was fed into the Market Samurai program to reveal the search performance of the individual SwissArmy knife brands. The Market Samurai program allowed the results to be exported into an Excelspreadsheet with records within amongst others the following data fields.

The search result obtained by the keyword analysis serves as a guide only and simply adds acomparative aid in ascertaining the public interest in the individual brands of knives. It is entirelyplausible that a good source of information on Swiss Army knives would be accessed with a morepopular search term such as “Victorinox knives”, “Wenger knives” or “Swiss Army Pocket knives”etc., however, interest in a specific brand from the outset would be expressed in the broad to exactsearch volumes displayed for the individual knife titles.

The top performing knives within the various categories described above, supported by popularityevident in the search trends, gave rise to a short list of Swiss Army knives considered to be the mostpopular amongst the public making use of the internet today.

Executive Summary

A list of 132 Swiss Army knives was tabled for analytical review.The sample of Swiss Army knives featured a 56% to 44% split in favour of Victorinox i.e. 74 of132 knives.The knives manufactured by Victorinox dominated over Wenger in terms of having a

considerably lower Sales Rank (more sales) on average and also by featuring the topperforming knives in this category. The top ten best performing items in this category allbelonged to the Victorinox knives whereas Wenger had no representation in the top 10Sales Rank sample.






The average rating of all knives which were rated by consumers displayed a high level of

customer satisfaction with all Swiss Army knives analysed. Both Victorinox and Wengerknives scored highly, which seems to indicate that the feedback received about theoverwhelming majority of these knives purchased was exceedingly positive.
