TAFE courses are ocused on learning or

your chosen eld o study. Youll also be given

many opportunities to put theory into practice

    through work placements and industry-basedprojects.

A key dierence between secondary school

and university is that the university learning

environment is much less structured. You

choose when to study and how hard to push

yoursel. While lecture times are clearly set out,

the responsibility to attend classes and

    complete homework is yours.

I youre a degree student, you could

    complement your course with additional

hands-on training rom a TAFE program, which

can help you stand out to potential employers.

For example, you could complement a degree

in a discipline such as commerce, science or

engineering with a diploma in sustainability.

Or, i you want to run your own event

Our fexible course structure allows you to add

depth and breadth to your degree, by letting

you choose rom an extensive range o subjects

    rom dierent disciplines.

    Majors

Most three-year degrees at Swinburne comprise

24 units o study. You undertake the majority o

these units in your primary area o study, which

    becomes your major.

Your major allows you to broaden yourknowledge in a particular area. The number o

subjects in a major may vary between courses.

For example, i you undertake a Bachelor o

Commerce, you can major in accounting and

    nance, commercial law, entrepreneurship and

    innovation, human resource management,

    international business, marketing or

    management.

    Elective units

The remaining units that make up your degree

are called elective units, which you can use to

explore related or non-related areas o interest.

Depending on your course structure and

timetable availability, you may be able to use

these units to complete a double major, a major

and a minor, or a major with two minors.

Please note that some our-year degrees may

    not oer the same fexibility.

    Minors

A minor is a set o subjects (shorter than

a major) studied throughout a degree. The

number o subjects in a minor may vary

    between courses.

Studying a minor will allow you to expand

your career options by adding another area

o expertise. You can also add depth to your

qualication by studying units related to

your major. For example, with a Bachelor o

Commerce, you could major in management

and undertake a minor in marketing, media or
