BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPSBoth the Buckeye men and women finished third at the conference championship meet, setting several school records and top five all-time performances.

GoldJunior Kathrin Demler became a Big Ten Champion for the first time, winning the 200 Fly with a time of 1:55.23.

Silver The 200 Free Relay team of Freya Rayner, Rebekah Bradley, Maria Coy and Taylor Petrak clocked in at 1:28.12 for a silver medal, posting the No. 4 time in program history. In the 1650 Free, Molly Kowal broke the school record with a time of 15:49.53 for silver.

The men’s side claimed six silver medals throughout the four-day competition. Andrew Loy set a school record in the 200 IM for second at 1:41.36, as did Noah Lense in the 200 Fly, clocking in at 1:40.36. The 400 Free Relay of Loy,

Paul DeLakis, Matthew Abeysinghe and Ruslan Gaziev teamed up for another school record and silver medal, finishing at 2:48.75. Finally, the 200 Free Relay of Loy, Gaziev, Mossimo Chavez and Ben Sugar posted a school record of 1:16.36 for silver. Rounding out the second-place finishes, DeLakis posted a time of 1:33.15 in the 200 Free and Henrique Painhas finished the 100 Back in 46.06 for the fourth-fastest time in program history.

Bronze The Buckeyes continued to make the podium, with a school record for the women’s 200 Medley Relay thanks to Bradley, Hanna Gresser, Katie Trace and Rayner clocking in at 1:35.85. Rayner claimed a bronze in the 50 Free with a time of 22.16, as did Kristen Romano in the 400 IM at 4:07.01.

The men’s 800 Free Relay of Loy, Gaziev, Nick Hogsed and DeLakis took third with a new program-best time of 6:13.44, led by a school-record leadoff leg of 1:32.75 for Loy. The 200 Medley Relay of Colin McDermott, Sugar, Michael Salazar and Mossimo Chavez also recorded a third-place finish with a time of 1:24.16, the No. 2 time in program history. Lense earned a bronze medal in the 100 Fly (45.45) and Loy did so in the 100 Free (42.48 – No. 3 in program history) to round out the medal finishes.

Notable PerformancesRebekah Bradley broke school record in 100 Back at 52.30, and would go on to lower it at the NCAA Championships. Jacob Siler finished fifth (429.40) on 3-Meter and Aaron Daniels-Freeman took sixth on the platform (397.90).

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPSAt the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, the men took ninth overall for the team’s best finish since 2010. The men earned the second-highest finish out of all Big Ten teams behind third-place and Big Ten champion Indiana. Paul DeLakis earned the highest individual finish for the Buckeyes, taking fifth in the 200 Free and becoming the new program record holder with a time of 1:32.01 and finishing sixth in the 200 Breast, also with a school record of 1:52.05. Noah Lense won the 200 Fly B Final with a time of 1:40.79. Joseph Canova finished seventh on the platform, leading the diving squad with a score of 368.95.

The relays were also on fire, with seventh-place finishes for both the 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay. Andrew Loy, Ruslan Gaziev, Mossimo Chavez and Ben Sugar clocked a time of 1:16.89 in the 200 Free Relay, while Loy, DeLakis, Matthew Abeysinghe and Gaziev posted a time of 3:50.28 in the 400 Free Relay. In the leadoff position, Loy recorded a personal record of 42.18, the No. 2 time in school history. To open the championships, the 800 Free Relay of Loy, DeLakis, Gaziev and Abeysinghe earned a 10th place finish with a time of 6:14.99, led by a school record time of 1:32.55 for Loy that was later bested by DeLakis in the individual event.

The women’s team started out the championship meet in a major way, posting the first sub-seven minute 800 Free Relay time in school history for the program record. Kristen Romano, Lucija Jurkovic-Perisa, Kathrin Demler and Katie Trace teamed up for 14th place overall. Not only did the group set the program mark, but Romano established a new 200 Free record at 1:44.48 as the leadoff leg.

Keeping the relay momentum rolling, the 200 Free Relay of Taylor Petrak, Freya Rayner, Rebekah Bradley and Maria Coy finished 11th at 1:27.83. The 400 Medley Relay of Bradley, Hanna Gresser, Katie Trace and Romano claimed the No. 3 time in program history at 3:32.91.

Individually, Molly Kowal led the way for the Buckeyes with a silver medal in the 1650 Free, lowering her school record to 15:44.61. Demler took 12th in the 200 Fly, cracking the school record at 1:55.06. Trace finished 14th in the 400 IM, clocking in with the No. 5 time in program history of 4:07.84. Finally, Bradley lowered her school record in the 100 Back to 51.96.

ACADEMIC HONORSFifty-three student-athletes from the Ohio State swimming & diving team were named Academic All-Big Ten honorees this year, the most from any swimming & diving team in the conference. To be eligible for the distinction, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Senior Reed McGraw led the Buckeyes with a perfect 4.0 GPA in biomedical engineering. McGraw, along with seniors Mossimo Chavez, Brad Shannon, Maria Coy, Mikayla Murphy and Kerrigan Vargo finish their careers as three-time honorees. In addition, 27 of the selections made their first appearance on the list.

The Buckeyes were also honored at the annual OSU Scholar-Athlete dinner, where a record 674 student-athletes were recognized throughout the night. The women’s swimming & diving team claimed the top overall large team GPA, an award presented by Varsity O. Sixty-four athletes from the swimming & diving team received OSU Scholar-Athlete distinction, including 31 women’s swimmers, 24 men’s swimmers and nine divers.

SUMMER MEET RECAPAlex Dillmann set a meet and pool record at the CSCAA National Championships and broke Olympian Pablo Morales’ pool record of 1:44.33 with a personal best time of 1:43.49.

On the international circuit, select Buckeyes competed for their respective countries from July 3-14 at the World University Games in Naples, Italy. Molly Kowal, Jacob Fielding, Jacob Siler and incoming freshman Lyle Yost represented the United States. Kathrin Demler swam for Germany, while Connor Isings represented Canada. Finally, incoming freshman Thomas Watkins competed for New Zealand. Notably, Buckeye head diving coach Justin Sochor was selected to be the head coach for the USA Diving team during the World University Games.

Jacob Fielding advanced to the 1-Meter Final after the opening day of competition at the World University Games with a score of 325.85. In the final, Fielding led the USA team with a fifth-place finish, scoring 337.80 but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 3-Meter semifinal, placing third of US competitors and 10th overall with a score of 340.75. Lyle Yost took 10th in the 1-Meter prelim with a score of 302.05.

In the 1500 Free Final at the World University Games, Molly Kowal secured her first international medial with a third-place finish and a new personal record with a time of 16:20.94. Kathrin Demler finished fourth in Heat 1 of the 200 Fly prelim, advancing to the semifinal where she narrowly missed qualification to the final. Connor Isings placed third in Heat 5 of the 50 Breast with a time of 28.43, good enough for a personal record. Thomas Watkins also notched a personal record and advanced to the semifinal of the 200 Back with a time of 2:00.65.

From July 12-28, Kristen Romano represented Puerto Rico at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

Back in the United States, the Buckeye training contingent competed in the Speedo Sectionals hosted by Cleveland State from July 18-21. After the three-day event, the Buckeyes stood atop the podium with 2088.5 combined points, outpacing second-place Club Wolverine by 500 points. OSU took the early lead on day one of competition with the women dominating the podium in the 200 Free. Georgia White secured gold (2:01.86) followed by Lucija Jurkovic-Perisa with sliver (2:03.52) and Nicole Fye finishing with the bronze (2:04.21). The women’s 400 Free relay team of Taylor Petrak, Freya Rayner, White and Jurkovic-Perisa set a new pool record, clocking a time of 3:48.16. Day one finished with the men’s 400 Free relay team of Andrew Loy, Josef Pohlmann, Paul DeLakis and Ruslan Gaziev securing first with a time of 3:27.81.

On day two of competition in the Speedo Sectionals, Josef Pohlmann broke a meet record, finishing at 24.41 in the 50 Fly. Notably, Colin McDermott placed first in the 100 Back (57.56) and Molly Kowal took gold in the 400 Free (4:19.19), while Alex Dillmann again sat atop the podium, this time in the 200 Fly and earned a personal record of 2:01.18, good enough to secure his trip to Omaha for the US Olympic Trials in 2020. Rounding out day two, a pair of OSU relay teams went one-two in the 800 Free.

Ohio State started strong and held the lead to finish first on the podium of the Speedo Sectionals. On the final day of competition, a trio of OSU men swept the 50 Breast podium with Hudson McDaniel claiming first while Jason Matthews notched second and Evan McFadden secured third. Nicole Fye dominated the field in the women’s 1500 Free, clocking a time of 17:05.78, over eight seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The Buckeyes finished

Following sectionals, a group of athletes represented Ohio State at the Philips 66 National Championships from July 31-August 4 in Palo Alto, California. Notably, six Buckeyes put up times under the 2020 Olympic Trail time standards and the 4x100 Free relay team of Andrew Loy, Ruslan Gaziev, Matthew Abeysinghe and Paul DeLakis finished first in the final and smashed a previous school record in the event by over three seconds with a time of 3:18.44.

Wrapping up the international competitions in August, Kristen Demler competed in the German National Championships and secured two personal bests in the 200 Fly (2:11.48) and the 400 IM.
