Meet our resident of the month Vivien
Steelman. Vivien was born Vivien Diversi to
parents John and Teresa in Madeira, Ohio. She
grew up in Madeira which is a small town in
Cincinnati. Vivien had two children; a daughter
Barbara and a son Jeffery. Vivien’s daughter
Barbara lives here in Springfield and visits twice a
week. Vivien married Ed Steelman in 1975, he
owned a boiler heating company and Vivien was a
homemaker. Vivien has no grandchildren but she
has a niece and nephew, two great nieces, two
great-great grand nephews and an 8 week old
great-great niece.
Vivien and her husband owned a houseboat
that they would take out onto the Ohio river
between Kentucky and Ohio. Vivien loved doing
this and even bought a mini cooler to put in the
boat so she could serve ice cream to her guests in
the heat of the day. She and Ed also enjoyed
traveling. The happy couple went on a cruise to
Alaska and an East Coast cruise to Martha’s
Vineyards. Vivien loved traveling and has gone to
Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Venezuela.
Vivien loves quilting. She has made at
least twenty quilts for family and friends. Her other
passion is Scandinavian needlepoint called
Hardanger. She has many lovely samples of her
craft in her room. Stop by and ask her to see
them, she’d love to show you. Vivien is very
talented. Vivien, thank you for sharing a little bit of
your life with us. It has been very interesting!

On August 19, 1988 President Ronald Reagan
declared, in Proclamation 5847, August 21
would from then on out serve as National
Senior Citizens Day.
The purpose of National Senior Citizens Day
was to not only highlight and celebrate the
achievements of older citizens each year, but
to bring about awareness and assistance to
the needs of senior citizens.
“We can best demonstrate our gratitude and
esteem by making sure that our communities
are good places in which to mature and grow
older—places in which older people can
participate to the fullest and can find the
encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and
services they need to continue to lead lives of
independence and dignity,” said President
Reagan.
This year, join Sweetbriar Villa in celebrating
the achievements past and present of our
residents and friends at Sweetbriar on August
19th, from 8:00 to 10:00, in the dining room.
National Senior Citizen’s Day!
“Throughout our history, older people have
achieved much for our families, our communities,
and our country… For all they have achieved
throughout life and for all they continue to accom-
plish, we owe older citizens our thanks and
heartfelt salute.”
Ronald Reagan

Art For A Cause
The number of Americans living with
Alzheimer’s disease is growing—and
growing fast. An estimated 5.4 million
Americans of all ages have Alzheimer’s
disease in 2016.
In 2015, over 15 million families and friends
provided 18 billion hours of unpaid care to
Alzheimer’s and other dementias. That care
had an estimated economic value of over
$221 billion.
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the costliest
chronic diseases in society. The growing
Alzheimer’s crises is helping to bankrupt
Medicare.
Alzheimer’s takes a devastating toll—not just
on those with the disease, but on entire
families.
This month on Thursday, the 11th at 2:00, in the
afternoon we will be holding an event called Art
For A Cause. The artwork that we create will be
auctioned off in September’s Art Auction and all
proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Together we can help create a
better, brighter future!

Joanne loves her residents and it shows every
