his kitchen began with a painting: a dreamy depiction of the homeowner’s old lakeside cottage

where she spent many joyful days. Now living in a town in Ontario, Canada, she hoped to re-create the abode to share with her own family of five.

Her current home – and the canvas for this project – was smart and well-proportioned, but in need of an update, according to interior designer Christine Elliott, who came on board to refresh the kitchen. While some original features remained – namely the exquisite maple cabinetry – others had to go; the existing floor tiles were traded for rich maple flooring, and a new splashback of handmade subway tiles was installed to reference East Coast American design. “I’ve always loved the Hamptons-inspired look,” says Christine. “It’s airy and bright and doesn’t date when done right.”

But the painting of the old cottage was never far from the homeowner’s mind – the kitchen’s colour palette was pulled straight from that original image, with the sweet blue hue of the island inspired by the cottage’s cushions and curtains. And in a poetic twist, the elegant new kitchen is now as pretty as a picture.
