THE NEWSLETTER FOR MEMBERS OF THE SWAN YACHT CLUB

THE CYGNUS JULY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB

SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD

EAST FREMANTLE

Dear Members,

Building Report

The galley and dining area renovations are progressing well with the new freezer room and lift close to being

finished. The kitchen now has the new range hood installed, all power and light wiring and ceilings are in and

the tiles are currently being laid.

The reception, offices and board room are now being painted to be ready for the carpet laying. The builders

are now currently in the dining area completing the hard walls to be ready for painting.

Therefore in a few weeks we may have the kitchen and dining room back in operation.

Grounds

The security fence around the slips has been completed, but don’t worry there are removable panels and

gates to access the boats with a crane if needed.

Social

Friday night, 30th June, upstairs we had a very successful Open Mic Night with approximately 140 members

and friends enjoying the evening.

Saturday night, 1st July, we had the Angling presentation night with 85 members and partners attending to

help celebrate and wind down with the successful competitors (but someone had to win the NAFA award

again, Greg).

Elections

Committee nominations will open 12th July and close 5 p.m. 26 July. The club will still trade as usual with

drinks, food and entertainment.

Members draw Friday 2 x $2500 and Sunday $1000 will still be active.

Regards

Kevin Bielby

THE CYGNUS JULY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB

SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD

Dear members,

Another year is over and what a successful and surprising one it’s been! We’ve had a phenomenal year with

our share of successes but we’ve also had a few anxious moments too which have predominantly been

related to club house renovations and servicing the clubs rapid growth.

Existing member confidence grew with the opening of the new stage 1 club facility and by the second half of

the year the club had realised significant growth in new membership and unprecedented interest related to

member functions and events.

All of the excitement and club successes throughout the year culminated in the club being acknowledged as

‘Club of the Year ‘at the annual Clubs WA gala event presentation.

At this point I would like to thank committees (both past and present), staff and our members for their hard

work, commitment and support towards the club over the past 12 months which arguably has been the

most important project undertaken and subsequent period of change in the clubs history.

The weekends, particularly during those warm summer days and nights were outstanding. Whether it was

the Friday night members draw or the Sunday Sessions it was obvious that the club has something special

about it with hundreds of members and guest in attendance relaxed in each other’s company the club

becoming the talking point of the local community offering an inclusive, safe and family friendly club

environment for everyone to enjoy.

Whilst the Sunday Sessions with the live music on the lawn was my personal highlight, Melbourne Cup,

Commodores Cocktail Party, Australia Day, Opening Day, ANZAC Day, Intra Club Angling Day, New Year’s Eve

and the Habitat Garden Party cultural event were just some of the outstanding events that the club hosted.

Moving forward, the club will continue with the mission ‘Bringing Life to the River’ giving members and

locals access to an involved boating community and the social benefits of a river-side lifestyle. We will work

hard to improve all facets of club operations including marina, food and beverage offers, functions and

events both on land and over the water working towards maximising the newly renovated venue.

In the coming months members will enjoy a revised menu created in the newly appointed kitchen in

company with a new wine list to compliment the cuisine in an enviable setting metres from the Swan River.

Having now tasted some of the successes whilst still under construction the club is committed to building on

the success and promises an exciting year ahead.

I look forward to sharing those successes with a Swan Yacht Club community committed to bringing life to

the river.

SWAN YACHT CLUB

SINCE 1904

Dear Members,

Well it has been a busy month at the club again and even though the weather has been particularly

inclement recently we have still experienced good attendance every weekend. I can only begin to imagine

how popular the Swan will be once our galley and restaurant re-open and the weather starts to improve.

I myself was granted the honor of attending the Cruising Yacht Club’s (Rockingham) 60th Gala Commodore’s

Ball recently representing our club. It was a fabulous event and very well attended, but it made me realize

that our clubs history dates back to 1904. That makes us 113 years old and surely must make us one of the

longest enduring yacht clubs in WA’s history and still going strong.

Last Friday night saw our most recent Open Mic Night eventuate which was an enormous success.

Approximately 140 people were thrilled by the many singers that got up to perform their repertoire and

most were of an exceptional standard. I for one am looking forward to the next one which should occur early

– mid August so please everyone keep an eye on the Cygnus and Enews and come down to join in the fun.

Well that’s it from me for another month and so as usual I wish you all fair winds and smooth seas.

Warm Regards,

Paul Nicholls

Vice Commodore

Greetings Fellow Members,

You will have noted by now that the slipway fencing is now installed. The panel sections are removable in

the event that you need to get a crane in to remove an engine or do something more serious like that.

However if you wish to remove a section of panelling, please seek approval from the office first and please

leave it like you found it. Only persons involved with their boat maintenance are permitted in the fenced

area and no children unless they are accompanied by an adult.

Notably the office has now sent out all membership and pen fee invoices. For those whose pen license

agreements are currently requiring the 3 yearly compliance check in order to renew, please contact one of

the following pen compliance officers to inspect your vessel in order to finalise your agreement. Refer to the

office for the compliance officers details.

The names of the compliance officers are:

Wayne Astill - Dennis Nott - Don Byfield - Ken McAlpine - Dennis Stubberfield - Ken Allen

Paul Nicholls & Kim Sorrell

Paperwork should be submitted to the office with the relevant insurance and rego details. Please note that

the Mooring committee need a compliance sticker to be stuck to the Port Side Window Adjacent to the

Registration Sticker in order to recognise the boat as currently compliant. In the event that you are within

the 3 year compliance check period and you don’t have a sticker on your boat, please contact the office who

will issue a new one and date it appropriately with the remaining length of time of your compliance check.

Boats without stickers will be seen as non compliant.

Kind regards,

Ian Harwood

Rear Commodore

Hi Everyone,

We knew winter would arrive at some stage and it has, sadly not bringing enough water for the dams or the

farmers but it’s a long way from over yet. We all like to snuggle in at home on winter nights because most of

us are just not used to winter cold and rain. Don and I have found if we make the effort to get out and

about its always worth our while. The club on a Friday night is a great place to be, the heaters creating cozy

warmth, and lots of fun and laughter whilst catching up with everyone and hoping to win some money in the

2 chances every Friday night in the members jackpot. Last Friday the “Crooners” with their Open Mic night

brought their own style of fun with everyone enjoying either listening to the singers or getting up to have a

go themselves. Some good and some not so good but having a go and everyone enjoying themselves. Thanks

to the Crooners for giving their time and efforts.

How proud we all are of the Swan Yacht Club winning the Prestigious Club of the Year award at the recent

WA Clubs awards night at the Crown Ballroom. There are over 900 clubs in WA so this is an amazing

achievement. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to make our club the great place that it is, and

it’s a privilege to be part of it. Well Done!!

Soon the kitchen will be finished and the renos complete. All in time for the Commodore’s Ball in honour of

our own Kevin Bielby and his partner Margot Thorne. This year it will be held on the 21st October. The

theme, and we are announcing it early so the ladies (and the gents) can start plan their outfits, is “A NIGHT

IN OLD SHANGHAI’. During the 1920-1930’s Shanghai was known as the “Paris of the East” and a certain kind

of lifestyle, which falls to the following words; pleasure, glamour, power and money. Where East meets

West in a time of Opium fed decadence and nightlife. A melting pot of Eastern and Western Culture. With

handsome men in hats, pretty girls in Cheongsams, and glamorous ladies in beautiful gowns “dripping”

diamonds and pearls. So its up to you whether to dress Eastern or Western or with Glitz and Glamour. To

learn more about this fascinating time in history of course you can ask Mr Google!! He also has wonderful

ideas on how to dress for such an occasion.

If you are a male member reading this can you please pass it on to your partners? A lot of the ladies have

told me they don’t see the emails…I’m sure they would hate to miss a chance to dress up and enjoy the first

Commodore’s Ball in the newly completed and fantastic venue we have all worked and waited for. It will be

a night to remember. Also let them know of any other up and coming events, it’s a shame to miss out

because you don’t know whats happening.

Until next month

See you at the club,
