All faculty members and staffs were engaged in the celebration of
Swachhata Pakhwada and following activities were undertaken by Krishi
Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Hari Ke, Tarn Taran during 16-31 May 2017
(Swachhata Pakhwada). Following activities were performed during
Swachhata Pakwada
1. KVK campus was cleaned and kept weed free, activities was conducted on
16-05-2017
Faculty members viz; Dr Balwinder Kumar, Dr Syed Shabih Hassan, Dr Anil Kumar,
Dr Shashipal, Mr Navjot Singh, Mr Nirmal Singh, Piverjeet Kaur and non teaching
staffs Mr Nirmal Singh, Rajbir Singh, Shamsher Singh, Khazan Singh, Daler Singh and
local people were diligently involved in cleaning of KVK campus and removed weeds
and garbage from the campus. KVK campus was made Parthenium free and removed
dust from the shelves and almirahs. Village representative and others were apprised
about the importance of the cleanliness and motivated to pass message of Swachhtta to
the inhabitants of their villages.

Cleanliness drive was conducted on 17.05.2017 at Shri Gurudwara Sahib,
Village- Booh Hathar, District- Tarn Taran. Yard and hall of the
Gurudwara was cleaned by involving local people. More than 25 local
people and KVK faculty members were involved in cleaning yard, carpet,
lawns and main hall of the Gurudwara at Booh Hathar. All KVK faculty
members were reached out in Shri Gurudwara Sahib for cleaning and
making local people aware about cleanliness. Village Sarpanch also
participated in this Swachhtta programme and motivated the farm women
for keeping the surrounding and their houses clean as guided by KVK
Tarn Taran.

3. Awareness on integrated fish farming practice for self employment was
conducted on 17.05.2017.
More than 25 farmers and unemployed youth were informed by Dr Syed Shabih Hassan
on integrated fish farming practice for self employment including new approaches in
integrated system. Farmers were exposed and overviewed on different aspects of
integrated fish farming for gaining maximum economy. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan
motivated farmers for adoption of integrated fish farming practice with
poultry/duckery/livestock/dairy/goat/piggery and discussed tenets of farming
technology for improving farmers economic status and surrounding condition including
environment preservation.
4. Cleaning of community (village) drainage and uprooting of road side
Parthenium and other grasses was conducted on 19-05-2017

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences
University, Tarn Taran organized off-campus agricultural field cleanliness and
awareness campaign at village Tur, Sarhali Kalan under Swachhta Pakhwara. Nineteen
farmers has participated in this event and cleaned the village drainage. The garbage
was disposed off in a common place outside the village. The weeds and unwanted
grasses especially Parthenium grass had also been uprooted from roadside. The farmers
were aware about adverse impact of congress grass on human and animals. Further,
manual, chemical and biological techniques for managing the congress grass were
discussed with the farmers. Farmers were motivated to prepare compost of kitchen
waste, animal roughages, litter, etc. and vermicompost of animal waste, which could be
utilized for increasing soil fertility and crop quality.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Tarn Taran organized one day seminar on cleanliness drive on
22.05.2017 at KVK Campus under the slogan our campus, swachh campus, Swachhta
Pakhwara (May 16-31, 2017). About 40 farmers from Mari Kamboke, Patti, Bhikhiwind, Dull
and Mari Udhoke villages has participated in the programme. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan
welcomed all the participants who joined Swachhata Pakhwara programme. On the occasion Dr
Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (T) made an appeal to farmers to clean their surroundings.
The garbage should be dumped on a common place to avoid adverse impact induced from it. He
also mentioned that dumping of garbage and unnecessary items at your surroundings, paths,
road, etc. foul smell, nuisance of flies, contamination of water bodies, pollution and many other
environmental related issues, which in turn may cause diseases in human and animals. Dr Syed
Shabih Hassan awaked the farmers on usage of eco-friendly technologies and avoidance of using
plastic. He further stressed on the use paper bags in place of plastics. Mr. Navjot Singh (SMS
Agronomy) also encouraged farmers for the use of rotavators, laser land levellers and other
resource conservation technology to discourage crop residue burning and precise use of
irrigation water. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan also appealed the farmers to adopt eco-friendly
technologies, to save the environment, to save the mankind, community and society. Other faculty
members of the KVK Dr Shashi Pal, Dr Anil Kumar, Mr. Navjot Singh, Mr. Nirmal Singh and
Mrs. Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon also interacted with farmers and awaked them on above matter.
They emphasised on usage of kitchen waste, animal roughages and unwanted weeds/grasses could
be utilized for the preparation of good quality nutrient rich compost. The FYM should not be
dumped on the roadside rather it be stored safely and scientifically to avoid nutrient losses from it
through volatilization and leaching by direct sunrays and rains, respectively. The KVK
administrative block was cleaned from inside by KVK staff and the unnecessary items were
disposed off in dust bins. Similarly, whole campus was cleaned from outside and the
unnecessary grasses were removed from the periphery of the Campus. The weeds and grasses
were dumped into the vermicompost pit for compost making. At the end of the programme Dr
Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (T) thanked all the participants for their active
participation and listening the views of scientists carefully and also made an appeal to take
commitment to clean our surrounding regularly for a healthy life. Oath was taken by all the
participants to keep their houses and surrounding swachh and to motivate others to keep their
surrounding weed free and clean.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran created awareness on Swachhta among farmers during the
one day workshop on Entrepreneurship in Agriculture and Livestock Farming organized by
KVK on 23.05.2017. The Hon’ble Deputy Commissioner, Tarn Taran was the Chief Guest of the
programme. Deputy Director (T), KVK, Tarn Taran awaked farmers on different aspect of
cleanliness. He emphasized that we must be committed to clean our surroundings of house,
village individually as well as on community basis. The dumping of garbage here and there may
contaminate water bodies and create pollution, which in turn may causes diseases in animals as
well as humans. Whole KVK staff aware the participants that our children to wash their hand
before taking meal and discussed on energy saving and water conservation etc. The kitchen
waste should be utilised for compost making. This is the responsibility of each individual to put
our area and surroundings neat and clean from all types of contaminants and unwanted
materials.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran organized off-campus agricultural field cleanliness and
awareness campaign in village Kirtowal on 24.05.2017. About 20 farmers have showed their
active participation for the cleaning/uprooting of Parthenium and other unnecessary grasses
along the roadside. While addressing the farmers and local people, Dr Balwinder Kumar,
Deputy Director (T), KVK, Tarn Taran highlighted the adverse impact of congress grass and
unwanted grasses in farmer`s field and at roadside/paths over human, agricultural crops and
causing problems to village based livestock. He also highlighted there is need to adopt manual,
chemical and biological control techniques for congress grass infested field and other
weeds/grasses, which are lowering the production rate and causing loss to biodiversity including
spread of diseases and allergies in human and animal life. During interaction with farmers, Dr
S. S. Hassan, Dr Anil Kumar, Mr. Navjot Singh, Mr. Nirmal Singh and Mrs. Piverjeet Kaur
Dhillon emphasised that congress grass contains several harmful chemicals that is not only
threat to human being, but also exerts strong allelopathic effects on different crops. They
suggested that a good quality compost can be prepared from congress grass and other unwanted
grasses and the same could also be utilized for vermicompost preparation. Dr Hassan informed
that FYM should not be dumped on the roadside rather it be stored safely and scientifically to
avoid nutrient losses from it through volatilization and leaching by direct sunrays and rains,
respectively. Village pond could be nice place for exercise and morning walk. Villagers agreed
that ponds in village should be made swachh so that it may give ambience to village beatification.
This is the responsibility of each individual to put our area and surroundings neat and clean
from all types of contaminants and unwanted materials. Village people agreed to keep their
surrounding weed free and clean.

8. Cleaning of school lawn by weeding of flower beds and Dumping of

Sardar Chainchal Singh Memorial Government Senior Secondary School, village Kirtowal on
25.05.2017. At this moment, Dr Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (T), KVK, Tarn Taran
interacted with students and made them aware about the importance of cleanliness in our life. Mrs.
Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon, Dr Anil Kumar and Mr. Nirmal Singh emphasised on adoption of green
technology and reduced use of plastic bags. They suggested that we should switch over from plastic
bags to left over jute bags for the collection of garbage. The scientists further told the students about
the process of green manure preparation from fruits and vegetable peels and cooked food left over.
The school principal suggested that we all should take the initiative at individual level starting from
cleanliness of our personal belongings to our surroundings.
Activities under Swachhatta Pakhwara in Govt. School in village Kirtowal
9. Cleanliness and weed removal in village Mohanpur was conducted on
26.05.2017
KrishiVigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University,
Tarn Taran organized off-campus agricultural field cleanliness, Parthenium grass and
awareness campaign in village Mohanpur Kalan under Swachhta Pakhwara. More than
15 farmers has participated in the event and cleaned agricultural field and Parthenium
grass.. The garbage was disposed off outside the village. The weeds and unwanted
grasses especially Parthenium grass was also uprooted from the agricultural field. The
farmers were informed about the adverse impact of weeds in agricultural fields. KVK
staff and villagers were involved in cleaning the area.

10. Awareness on fish processing/preservation, value added fish products and
hygienic management of fish market condition was conducted on
30.05.2017.
More than 40 farmers/farm women and unemployed youth were informed by Dr Syed
Shabih Hassan, Asstt. Scientist (Fisheries) on fish processing, preservation techniques
including new approaches in fish preservation. Farmers were exposed and overviewed
on irradiation, minced fish technology, canned fish, smoked fishes, dried fishes, fish
processing equipments, hygiene, quality control techniques and cleaning management in
fish market condition for increasing numbers of fish consumers. Dr S. S. Hassan told
farmers/farm women and unemployed youth to make value added fish products of
culturable and riverine fishes by making fish fingers, fish balls, fish pakora, fish curry,
fish nuggets, fish meal etc to gain income for their livelihood and better cleanliness. He
also informed that discarded fish or unused fish parts can be used for making fish
silage. KVK staff apprised participants about the importance of Swachhatta in better
surrounding and environment.
11. Distribution of colourful dustbins among farm women/farm men under the
slogan conserve energy, save water and swachh environment on 31.05.2017. More than 50 farmers and farm women participated in Swachhta Pakhwada under the
slogan Conserve energy, Save water and Swachh environment, events conducted by
KVK Tarn Taran. A total of 16 plastic dustbins were distributed among
farmwomen/farm men through lottery system for the collection of household garbage or
village garbage and dumping the garbage at identified place. The plastic dustbins were
donated by Dr Shashipal, one of KVK faculty member. The aim of the event to reach
out among local people in order to segregate degradable and non-degradable waste
materials for keeping good health, hygiene and cleanliness in their houses and
surrounding vicinity. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan also made local people motivated towards
curtailing the unnecessary use of electricity consumption in on campus and off campus
trainings and use of CFL and LED bulbs at their farm areas and homes to reduce
energy consumption. Dr S. S. Hassan also appealed to local people about shunning the
practice of excess use of diesel/petrol and desired to use bicycle in daily routine life and
not to dump any solid liquid material in rivers/wetlands/community village pond, dry &
wet garbage and utilize garbage for compost making. Dr Shashipal discussed with
farmers about causes of dirt/garbage, improper garbage dumping, non availability of
municipal workers/vehicles, and use of colourful dustbins for household cleaning and
surroundings.

All the above activities undertaken by the faculty members of Krishi Vigyan
Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran under Swachhata Pakhwara were performed and
disseminated among people, which is supposed to have an impact on local people,
underprivileged person/poor people, local farmers, household ladies, women, youths,
students and commuters understood the importance of the cleanliness, sanitation,
environment and community health.
