Coping with a bereavementLosing a loved one can bedevastating even if youvebeen through it before. But,although the pain associ-ated with losing a loved one isunavoidable, there are ways todeal with it and plenty of copingmechanisms recommended bydoctors.

The important thing to remem-ber is that there is no right orwrong way to feel. You mightcollapse under the weight ofall the emotions hitting your atonce, or you may experiencethe stages of grief gradually,over an extended period.

Its generally accepted that

there are four stages of grief:acceptance, pain, adjustmentand moving on. Dont expect togo through these emotions oneafter the other, but do expect tofeel them over time.

Sometimes grief is just toomuch to bear. It might engulfyour whole life, leaving every-thing seemingly chaotic andout of control. You might be leftfeeling shocked and numb, per-haps angry or guilty or perhaps,you might feel an overwhelmingsadness.

All of these feelings are okand you should give yourselftime to work through them as

they will ease with time.Talking and sharing your

feelings with someone canhelp- youre not alone. Even ifyou dont have family or friendsaround you, there is supportavailable. Why not speak to yourGP for help or call Cruse on0844 4779400?

Your GP could put you intouch with a bereavement coun-sellor who will give you the timeand space to talk about yourthoughts and feelings. Some-times grief doesnt hit for manyyears after the person has diedor sometimes it can go on foryears, either way a bereavement

counsellor can help.Finally, dont be afraid to talk

about the person who has died.Perhaps those around you arescared to mention them in caseit causes upset, but sometimesremembering your loved oneand talking about them canease the pain a little.
