Most employees would prefer to work f
a irm that values loyalty and tradtonTHE vast majority of employees want towork for a firm that has a “family feel” andis held together by “loyalty and tradition”according to the latest Employee Outlook 2015survey, published by the CIPD, the profes-sional body for HR and people development,in partnership with Halogen Software.
In response, the CIPD recommends organi-sations should regularly assess perceptionsof organisational culture and highlights howa mismatch between how employees see theculture of their organisation and the type of culture they would prefer to work within canhave significant implications for talent man-agement and overall business success.
Asked to describe the kind of firm theycurrently work for, 50 per cent of the 2,226employees surveyed described their organisa-
tion’s culture as “a formalised and structuredplace to work, where procedures govern whatyou do and hold people together”.
Twenty-six per cent of employees describetheir current organisation as having a “fam-ily feel” but when asked what their preferredworking environment would be, 55 per centspecified they would prefer to work in an or-ganisation “with a family feel, held togetherby loyalty and tradition”.
This was higher for women than men (60
per cent compared with 50 per cent) but a con-sistent choice across all age groups.
The CIPD’s survey also found employeeengagement was at a three-year high, risingfrom 35 per cent in 2013 and 38 per cent in2014 to 39 per cent in the 2015 survey. Justthree per cent of employees claimed to bedisengaged, a slight decrease of one per centon the year before. However, the majority of people (59 per cent) considered their engage-ment as neutral.
Jessica Cooper, research adviser at theCIPD, said: “This is a defining moment forbusinesses. After the uncertainty of therecession, we’ve now reached a point of stability which is seeing improved engage-ment from employees. However, far too manypeople are still sitting in the “neutral” camp.
Now is the time for businesses to engage withtheir talent to understand how they can rein-force and evolve their organisational culturemoving forward. And the direction of travelis clear: employees want to work somewherewith a ‘family feel’, where they can reallyfeel like they are part of something. Cul-ture is one of the few things that can definea business and if organisations can get itright, it will give them a competitive edgeand a strong foundation for business growth.
Culture can’t change overnight, but organisa-tions can start to think about ways in whichthey can make changes to better suit their tal-ent’s preferences. Equally, employees shouldconsider culture when moving jobs in orderto have a more satisfying role.”
While employee engagement is ticking up, job satisfaction has remained the same as inthe autumn 2014 survey, averaging at +47 (netsatisfaction score).
Employees at micro-businesses report thehighest levels of job satisfaction at +75 andin small businesses it stands at +42, a slightincrease on last year (+41). However, medium-sized businesses have seen job satisfactiondrop from +40 to +38 and employee engage-ment fall from +44 to +40.
Dominique Jones, vice president of human
resources at Halogen Software, said: “Giventhe critical impact of culture on everythingfrom employee engagement to business out-comes and results, organisations that want toboost workplace productivity and employeeretention need to incorporate the key attrib-utes of their company culture into all stagesof their talent management process..”
Further findings include:• Employee attitudes towards senior leaders
are continuing to steadily improve. The area
