READ THE DIRECTIONSThis is not like ordinary paints! POR-15 is a high

tech, high performance coating that will stop rust permanently. It resists chipping and cracking, and is hammer-tough, as long as you follow the directions. It is unlike any “paint” you have ever used so please

don’t use old methods that were developed for “paints”. We supply you with carefully written

instructions on a supplementary sheet as well as the label on the item. Please read and follow them

carefully. You’ll love the results! Everyone who uses the product correctly confirms it does what it says.

We have many thousands of satisfied customers around Australia. POR-15 Inc in the USA has been in operation for more than 40 years and is very well known amongst Restorers, Hot Rod builders, BOATERS and increasingly in industry. A proven product, with a long history.

The Do’s and Don’ts with POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint

Do’s Don’ts• If spraying wear an organic vapour particulate

respirator NIOSH/MSHA approved.

• Do roughen up smooth metal with sandpaper to give it something to bite into.

• Make sure all the surfaces are very dry before painting. This is IMPORTANT and more so in marine applications. Use a heat gun / hairdryer / blow torch to rid the metal of all moisture. This will ensure the rust won’t come back.

• Wear gloves and protection, POR-15 will stay on your skin for 4-5 days if it’s not wiped off with Solvent or thinners immediately.

• Do apply thin coats of Tie-Coat, thick coats will take days to dry, or use Acid 8 (dries in 1 hour).

• Stick to the system, we know it works... And when all else fails read the instructions......We have more job failures with professionals than amateurs as they tend to go by past “experience” with normal paints, not by the POR-15 instructions.

• Don’t put a primer on after sandblasting. POR-15 chemically bonds to the metal.

• Don’t shake the tin, it creates bubbles and destroys the smooth brush finish.

• Don’t back track when you’re brushing. 3-4 strokes maximum and move on.

• Don’t paint out of the can if you intend to keep any paint in the can. Pour out what you need, keep the rim very clean and seal it with cling wrap before replacing the lid.

POR-15 products work as a complete system. Used together, they stop rust and corrosion and prevent it from returning. Not only are the products in our catalogue available individually, many are also available in cost-saving kits geared to your specific restoration needs. Here is how the system works:

NOTE: The application of POR-15 and Preparation Products will depend on the material and environment in which it will be used. Often not all steps are required.

POR 15 began over 40 years ago in the U.S.A. Its original purpose was to service the auto, military and motorbike markets. Since then its versatility and durability has seen it put to work in all sorts of areas - many of them quite unexpected; Boats, trailers, homes, factories, helicopters, farms, and mining equipment - the list goes on and on. Wherever there is a need to protect against rust or corrosion or purely for its sheer durability POR-15 is the best product to use.

We would love to hear of any new uses (they seem to come up all the time). Please let us know as we can publish them on our website so others can benefit as well.

We have used an acid damaged and rusty battery tray as our illustrated example as they are a common problem. They can be fixed permanently as battery acid won’t affect POR-15, nor will brake fluid (up to dot 4).

Get rid of loose rust with wire brush or sandpaper. Clean rust or corroded metal with Marine Clean, a powerful yet environmentally-safe cleaner. Marine Clean removes dirt, grease, wax and other contaminants that could interfere with your restoration. Rinse off well with water (don’t use solvent based degreasers like Prepsol).

This step is not necessary on newly sandblasted surfaces. A rust remover/primer, Metal Ready neutralises rust and etches metal for better adhesion. It coats the metal surface with zinc phosphate to encourage deep bonding of POR-15 to the base metal and rust. Rinse off with water. Before painting ensure the surface is bone dry. It looks horrible after this step but that’s good.

After thorough drying (heat gun is best), coat with POR-15 (we used POR-15 silver for the photograph) by painting the rusty or corroded metal with POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint. RIGHT ONTO THE RUST! POR-15 bonds to the rusty metal and forms an unbelievably tough, almost ceramic-like finish that will not crack, chip or peel and stops rust permanently!

This stage is not necessary if the parts are not exposed to UV light. (ie. chassis, under vehicles etc.) Now it’s topcoat option time: Blackcote, Chassis Coat, Stirling Silver, Engine Enamels, Metal Mask, Hardnose, WhiteCote or any topcoat system. Some applications may need our Tie-Coat primer or Acid8 for proper adhesion.

Now you have a permanently repaired battery tray, that will not rust again, even if you have an old leaky battery!

1 Apply Metal Ready to all metal areas to be painted

2 Leave 30 minutes to remove rust and coat with zinc phosphate

3 Rinse with water or wet rag (it will have a salt and pepper look). Dry well (heat gun).

Etches metal & leaves a zinc phosphate coating

Metal Ready provides the best adhesion on any surface, including aluminium and shiny polished metal surfaces. After thoroughly degreasing your work piece with Marine Clean. Apply Metal Ready, this one step process both neutralises any rust and gently etches any clean bare metal, creating an ideal anchor pattern for coatings such as POR-15, whilst simultaneously leaving a zinc phosphate coating to promote chemical bonding of the paint to the steel.

Step 1 - Marine Clean(Water Based) Cleans and degreases in one application

Marine Clean cleans and degreases in one application without leaving residues, noxious fumes or flammable solvent. It makes petroleum-based cleaners almost obsolete because Marine Clean can be diluted 3,4,5, and even 10 times it’s volume while remaining more potent than other cleaners. Marine Clean removes grease, oil, mildew, algae, musty odours, soap films and wax. Use it also to clean canvas, vinyl, nylon, holding tanks, grease traps, auto parts and more.

Before applying ANY rust preventative paint or coating, you MUST remove all oily film or residue. Even if you’re sure your work is clean hit it with Marine Clean to be certain of good adhesion. This is water based, don’t use solvent based cleaners.

POR-15 RUST PAINT

AUTOSPOR-15 is so tough you can hit it with a hammer and do no damage. Yet it also has incredible flexibility and can withstand much twisting and bending without cracking. It can be used on all auto work from chassis, front ends, rear ends, axles, floor pans, fuel tanks, engines, battery boxes (acid does not affect POR-15 nor does brake fluid), to all external work. Even prime your vehicle’s exterior.

BOATSBoat owners use it in a thousand ways. Below decks for engines, engine mounts, bilges, hull maintenance, sealing tanks. Super Starter Kit

Often it’s better to use a different colour for subsequent coats, ie. grey and then black, which shows where you’ve missed on the previous coat.

Black Gloss is our most popular colour and is ideal for automotive work. Suspensions, chassis, floorboards, mudguards, engines, boot area, gearboxes, axles, etc.

Black Semi Gloss now available.

Grey is an excellent choice for all general work especially machinery. Also as an alternative primer colour to black. This is used a lot in marine applications.

Silver contains more metal flakes and has a high solid content. Good for smoothing rough pitted areas as a primary coat. Often used in industrial applications. When used as a first coat on rusty areas the rust colour may leach through the paint and should be second coated with black.

Clear dries to a perfect finish and is often used as a primer on exterior surfaces before final painting. Ideal for repairing cracked fibreglass - used instead of GRP resin (stress cracking). This is not a final clear coat. See Topcoats Clear.

8 SOLVENTS & STRIPPERS

Paint Stripper - Gel or Liquid

There is not much it won't take off. It resists drying out and will cling to vertical surfaces. Enamels, epoxies, lacquers, polyurethanes and acrylics don't stand a chance. Fast and powerful yet won't damage or etch glass or aluminium. POR-15 Paint Stripper is water soluble making clean up simple and quick with little mess. Apply with a brush, leave 10-30 minutes. If covered with food wrapping it helps contain the active ingredients and improves the number of coats removed.

2 Just brush POR-Strip right onto the painted surface. Almost instantly, POR-Strip begins to bubble the layers of old paint. Brush more, if needed.

Solvent

Use POR-15 Solvent when thinning or spraying. This is important as regular solvents often contain moisture which can affect POR-15 products. POR Solvent is of high purity with minimal moisture content. It can also be used for thinning most 2 pack products, lacquers and epoxy paints. Do not use other thinners for thinning POR15 products. GP thinners can be used for cleanup.

Deox-CConcentrated rust remover powder

Dissolved 1 part powder in 19 parts water, a Deox-C bath will clean the most awkward, heavily rusted items brilliantly with no effort, distortion or health risk at all. Deox-C leaves pure bare metal with no traces of corrosion. Simple to use, economical and saves hours of less effective wire brushing or blast cleaning. Parts are ready for painting or coating. Deox-C can be reused until it turns black.

Rusted pliers found in the garden after 10 years. After immersion in Deox-C for 24 hours they are now useable again.

Deox-GelGelled rust remover

If items are too big for a Deox-C bath then use Deox-Gel - the same high-power yet safe active constituents, but in gelled form for brush application. Removes corrosion leaving a bare-metal surface ready for paint or coatings. Approximate coverage 2m2 per litre.

SW2 Protective Coat

It does everything that Fish Oils do - without the stickiness or fishy smell! It has a great capillary action that goes into double folds. If painting is hard or impossible then SW2 is the way to go. Ideal for interior of vehicle doors, body panels, hollow sections of chassis, trapped recesses, etc. This Protective Oil is thin and forms a water resistant, penetrating film which dries to a hard satin coating to prevent condensation rust damage and corrosion. It is also used as a long-term protective film on stored machinery parts, castings and the like. Can be painted over the top which makes it ideal to use between sandblasting and painting if there is going to be a time lag.

P40 Hole Filler

P40 HOLE FILLER is for applications that require more strength, such as bridging holes, or filling high-stress areas. P40 is loaded with tiny polyester fibres, which makes it many times stronger than ordinary body fillers. Use P40 HOLE FILLER in conjunction with POR-15, to make permanent repairs to deep pits or rust holes. Then use the P38 FILLER to finish off the repair, for a final smooth appearance.

P38 FILLER has over 30% more resin than other fillers, which gives it much greater adhesion. This makes it the recommended choice for applying over POR-15.

P38 has ultra fine particles for perfect feathering of edges, and is manufactured under vacuum, which eliminates those pesky air holes you’ve experienced with other fillers. It’s more flexible, tougher, and able to tolerate higher temperatures than other fillers (you can even use it in a baking oven!).

Paint POR-15 over the rusted area. Apply the P38, sand smooth and then apply another coat of POR-15. This way the metal is sealed and the bog is sandwiched giving a 100% fix.

Apply 2 coats of POR-15 over the whole area, apply the P40 and the P38 and give it all another coat of POR-15. This way the metal and bog are both sealed in.

U POL Fillers have been tested to work with POR-15. Many locally made fillers

will not adhere to POR-15.

Prime and paint over cured POR-15. This very special interlocking primer paints over the top of POR-15 without any need to rough up or de-gloss the surface. Just ensure the surface is free of any grease, oil or dust (use Marine Clean). Tie-Coat is a tough yet sandable single component polyurethane primer with special adhesion characteristics. Which makes it perfect for most painted surfaces - especially POR-15. Tie-Coat applies with brush or spray and is easy to sand to a smooth finish. Only light coats are required.

Acid 8 works the same as Tie Coat but dries quicker. (Normally about 2 hrs). It’s available in both 1 litre cans and the convenient 450 ml aerosol. The 1 litre can doesn’t need thinning for spraying.

The 450ml aerosol allows a quick spray to etch prime POR-15 (saves sanding) and with the quick drying means the job gets finished sooner.

Por Patch

Por Patch is a highly concentrated version of POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint. It comes in a tube and has the consistency of toothpaste making it a most effective filler. When cured, Por Patch is virtually indestructible yet it remains flexible and won’t chip or crack. This single component filler not only covers rust and prevents it spreading but also strengthens the underlying metal and seals holes, gaps or seams by forming its own membrane. 1001 filling and sealing uses - metal, wood, concrete and plastic.

POR-15® Self-Etching Primer is NOT a high-build primer, it can be sprayed or brushed on almost any painted surface and can be top coated in 15 - 30 minutes. It bonds incredibly well to POR-15® Rust Preventive Paint, and all topcoats bond incredibly well to POR-15® Self-Etching Primer. It can be sanded lightly, and, if desired, multiple coats may be applied.

It is available in an aerosol spray. In situations where you are top coating an old POR-15® finish, we first recommend a light sanding with any 280 to 320 grit paper.

Our topcoats are designed to work with POR-15 Rust Prevention Paint but with UV stability. They don’t have the same chemical bonding to the metal so both are required for a UV exposed surface. They are highly flexible, non-porous, extremely scratch and chip resistant and strengthen with exposure to moisture.

Used over POR-15 they deliver the toughest, most permanent protection against rust and corrosion ever developed. Plus they look terrific! They will cover approx. 10 sq metres per litre and normally need a little thinning with POR-15 Solvent. BlackCote is glossy while Chassis Coat is semi gloss. Stirling Silver is semi gloss.

Glisten PC has all the properties of Hardnose but is a water-clear coat. Like many other POR-15 coatings Glisten PC is a moisture cured coating which means it is strengthened by exposure to moisture. It will not crack, chip, peel or yellow, is very flexible, and UV stable.Glisten PC will not leave brush marks, can be second coated in 30 minutes and will dry in an hour although maximum hardness will take a few days.Typical marine uses are on stanchions, alloys, polished brass work (don’t polish again), bright work, polished aluminium, stainless steel (stop the rust weep), decks (instead of varnish), indoor woodwork, etc.Other uses are aluminium and stainless steel wall signs, gold bathroom taps, wood floors and top coating garden furniture, to name a few.

It is resistant to most chemicals and acids as well as salt laden atmospheres. Our AP 120 is recommended as an etching primer/cleaner for use with alloys (non ferrous metals). It has been proven to give a 30-40% better adhesion.

Ensures high adhesion levels on alloys and other metals without tarnishing the surface. AP120 is a must when using Glisten PC on alloy surfaces. Also improves adhesion on other surfaces - glass, chrome, stainless steel. Apply and leave for approx. 1 minute (do not allow to dry) and wash off with water. Dry the surface very well.

POR-15 Engine Enamels are superior quality with 80% solids (pigments) and therefore they flow easily, cover better (normally only one brush coat is required, two if sprayed), are guaranteed not to burn off and last longer than any other product. Quite simply, POR-15 Engine Enamels are the best available.

Cheap paints use inexpensive fillers to mask their lack of proper pigmentation and depth. They usually contain a high proportion of solvents which evaporate quickly.

Glyptal 1201 Internal Engine Coating

Glyptal 1201 is a specialised, air dried enamel coating, used in the USA for over 30 years. For the engine restorer it’s used as an internal engine coating, (amongst other electrical industry applications for insulation). We have frequently been asked for this product, particularly for older restorations with motors that are slightly porous.

It’s resistance to oil is excellent, and water, acid, salt water, is good. Air dried or it can be baked to a smooth finish. Designed to withstand continuous temp of 135º C. It can be thinned with POR-15 solvent.

For best results sandblast your manifold to ensure surface is totally clean and ready for painting. May require thinning.

Factory Manifold GreyLooks like original factory cast iron with a flat, non-gloss finish. Withstands temperatures up to 760°C and will not burn off.

US Standard Fuel Tank Sealer is the only one tested and proven to work with all fuels including ethanol and methanol. It has superior strength, is fuel resistant, and is non-flammable.

Wurth Rubber Care Gel Stick is silicone-free, bio-degradable, and water repellant. Treated rubber will resist diluted acids and alkaline substances. Strong alkaline cleaners will not degrade the protected rubber. It will also resist salt water, which is essential if you live by the ocean.

Calcium inhibitors in the Wurth washer prevent deposits that cloud your visibility that build up in time and plain water just doesn’t remove them. Auto Foam is designed to be used with a pressure washer. Bilt-Hamber Auto-foam is a foaming water-based pre wash treatment, designed to soak and saturate soiled vehicle paintwork prior to the application of vehicle shampoo. INOX contains no silicon, acid, kerosene or dieselene. Great where a water proofing lubricant is needed. Outboards, fishing reels etc. It will not harm metal points or surfaces, plastics, paints, enamels, fibreglass, formica or neoprene seals.

Lanolin is a natural wax found in animal wool, especially from sheep. It is a corrosion and waterproofing agent for a variety of metals, materials, timbers, to protect sails, leather, outboard motors, fishing equipment, etc. all areas where a protective residue is required, LANOX would be better suited.

Sand or bead blast all those small parts to get the professional finish the pros get. Compressor requirement is a constant 5cfm at 80 psi.

We can supply 12.5kg pails or 25kg bags of glass or garnet beads but due to the different blasting requirements these are not supplied with the kit.

When using the PPC Blast Cabinet, a variety of dry abrasives can be used depending on the requirements of the user. Generally, the higher the grit number, the finer the abrasive. The finer the abrasive, the smoother the finish. Coarse-grit abrasives, cut fast, but the finish isn’t quite as smooth as with fine-grit abrasives. Most popular abrasives are Glass Beads.

When abrasive blasting aluminium, brass or softer metals, use a lower air pressure (40-60 psi) for the best results. The same applies to carving or etching glass. Hard metals can be cleaned best using 50-80 psi.

We have found that for badly rusted metal, garnet chips work best.

30 LEATHERIQUE

This is the original formula; a patented, pH-correct blend of natural oils, fats and collagen to nourish and maintain healthy leather and restore luxurious suppleness, adding new life to tired leather. Leatherique restores cardboard-hard leather. It does not contain greasy oils or cheap watery fillers, waxes, silicones, or mineral oils. Marine ApplicationsPOR-15 paints are ideal in Marine applications but there are a few “MUST do’s” to get the right results.

Painted with POR-15 and 2 pack epoxy as a top coat. The inside is also POR-15 coated.

Clean and DryFirstly prior to applying POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint (RPP) all loose flakey metal should be removed and the metal must be clean and DRY. Steel can harbour moisture in the pores and the more rusted it is the more likely it is to have moisture in it. Any moisture drops left behind when it’s painted over will come back as rust bubbles. Salt is hydroscopic and will also harbour moisture. So we need a clean and dry surface.

Number of CoatsWe always recommend a minimum of two coats and three in a marine application for two reasons. One is to make sure that there is 100% coverage and no pinholes left in the coating for moisture to get through to the metal. The other is to build up a good coating thickness.

UV Stability and UnderwaterPOR-15 Rust Preventative Paint (RPP) is not UV stable and so it does need a top coat if exposed to the sun. If it is submersed permanently (on the keel, rudders etc) then it also needs to be top coated prior to antifoul being applied.

Planning the JobAs you need to do the right prepping for a good result and with POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint needing to be applied in 3-5 hour intervals you need to plan your timing fairly carefully. Do all the prepping prior to painting day, make sure there is no dew etc. Start early, POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint also needs time to cure, minimum 3 - 5 days, before being submersed. The normal up the slip and back into the water as soon as possible (I know slip time costs money) will not get the best results and can leave a soft POR-15 coating.

It is better to paint in sections and get the timing right between coats. Avoid sea breezes bringing in moist damp air in the late afternoon between coats…it won’t stick to a moist surface, we’re back to, DRY again.. Cover overnight.

POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint will cover approximately 10 sq metres per litre per coat. Marine Clean and Metal Ready will do slightly more.

One of the best ways to apply the top coat is to apply a dust coat of the primer for the top coat on to a tacky last coat of POR Rust Preventative Paint. Allow to cure and then apply a full primer coat and then the top coat.

Our Tie-Coat or U Pol Acid 8 as the linking coat can both be applied to cured POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint but should not be left exposed to the elements before top coating with whatever paint you desire.

Glisten PC (clear coat) will cover aprox 14 sq metre per litre. Glisten PC applied on wood should be treated like a varnish and have multiple coats applied to dry wood.

Where to Use itPOR-15 can be used with excellent results on Steel boats, Ferro Cement, aluminium, wood and the POR-15 Clear is very good on fibre glass particularly where you get stress cracking. Applications are endless and we have a range of products from Whitecote for decks and masts etc. to Glisten PC on brass, stainless steel aluminium as well as woodwork and Pelucid for indoor woodwork.
