BY JOHN GUNYOU
Chair, Three Rivers Park District Board
Welcome! It has been my privilege to serve the Lake Minnetonka area for many
years – as Minnetonka’s city manager, and now as Three Rivers Park District commissioner.
During that time, I have come to know the “Big Waters” as the focus of a region that offers an exceptional quality of life for its residents and visitors. Lake Minnetonka has long been a special gathering place for Minnesotans to live, work and play.
Growing up on a large lake, my childhood was spent outdoors – beaches, sailing and waterskiing in the sum-mer, ice skating and ice boating in the winter. I am so very grateful that my children and grandchildren have been af-forded the same opportunity to build their own memories here in Minnesota.
As Three Rivers Board Chair, I am particularly proud of the many parks and trails we maintain in the region to promote environmental stewardship through recreation and education. Our natural settings make Minnesota unique, and we remain committed to connecting people with nature at places such as Lake Minnetonka Regional
Park, Baker Park Reserve and Noerenberg Gardens. The wealth of trails we manage provides bikers and walkers a unique
perspective of the Lake Minnetonka region. Our 16-mile Lake Minnetonka Trail runs from Minnetonka to Victoria along the southern border of the lake, and our 13-mile Dakota Rail Trail offers spectacular views along the northern shore from Wayzata to St. Boni — and all points between.
The many communities that line the 125 miles of lakeshore offer a rich diversity of year-round opportunities for people of all ages and interests. Like most area residents, we have our own favorite haunts, and enjoy sharing them with friends and visitors throughout the seasons.
Each community has its own character and charm, with neighborhoods, shops and public spaces refl ecting the traditions of the area. Annual events and festivals include such popular gatherings as the Fourth of July fi reworks at Excelsior Commons, to the Tour de Tonka family bike event in Minnetonka, to the Chilly Open golf on frozen Lake Minnetonka in downtown Wayzata.
Schools are the heart of a community, and the region is also widely known for its exceptional educational opportunities. Our school districts consis-tently lead the state and nation in performance – both academically and in extracurricular activities, ranging from organized athletics to the performing arts to clubs of all manner.
There’s truly something for everyone, and I hope you will join us in taking advantage of all the Lake Minnetonka area has to offer!
Gunyou is the chair of the Three Rivers Park District Board.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 Lakeshore Lifestyle Guide. What makes the Lake Minnetonka area such a great
place to be? For this year’s guide we asked for your advice and called upon a random sampling of lake area residents to tell us what they love about living here. Throughout our 2015-16 Lakeshore Lifestyle Guide, you’ll see what they enjoy about the area, the communities, the businesses and all the other amenities that make the Lake Minnetonka area not just where they live but what makes it their home.
The Lake Minnetonka area offers unparallelled quality of life and communities surrounding the lake have been recog-nized in a host of national rankings for being a great place to live, work and play.
Lake Minnetonka itself, with 125 miles of lakeshore, serves as a year-round draw.
The area is also well-known for its high quality public and private schools.
There is much to do and enjoy in area. There are events and festivals throughout the year, ranging from Fourth of July
fi reworks in Excelsior to frozen Chilly Open golf in Wayzata in the winter. For outdoor enthusiasts, the lake offers recreation and relaxation as well as sporting opportunities to residents and visitors to the community. Regional and local parks and hundreds of miles of trails provide ample incentive to enjoy the outdoors.

- Tiffany Winter
Keeping occupied in the area is easy for residents and visitors alike. Local attractions such as festivals, parks, trails and gardens
abound. Of course, the area is best known for Lake Minnetonka and its wide array of activities.
“Lake Minnetonka area residents agree – there’s no better or lovelier place to live, to work, to raise a family, to learn, to worship, to grow old,” Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners Executive Director LaDonna Hoy said.
“Lake Minnetonka is not just a destination; it’s a way of life,” said Tiffany Winter, Mound resident, author and owner of Cooks Bay Marketing. “Each community the lake touches embraces everything the lake offers with an abundance of boating and water activities, public parks lining the shore and summer festivals. It’s even a hot spot in the cold winters with communities of ice houses popping up in each bay and winter sports competitions held on the ice.”
Excelsior resident and media personality Natalie Webster said anyone, regardless of age or interest, can fi nd something they like in the area.
“There really does seem to be something for everyone in the Lake Minnetonka area. You can boat, swim, kayak, fi sh and even surf. Hav-ing so many options does wonders for improving one’s quality of life. We really are blessed to be surrounded by so many beautiful and useful natural resources,” she said.
“Anything and everything you could possibly need, you can fi nd around here. There’s no need to leave the Lake Minnetonka bubble,” Webster said.

VARIETY SPICES UP LOCAL FOOD CULTURE
People who stop at any of the local downtown areas will fi nd a wealth of food options.
Those who enjoy doing their own cooking can stop at one of the many farmers markets that run during the spring, summer and fall. Most days of the week, local residents and visitors don’t have to travel far to fi nd a market with a variety of locally grown produce. Any menu items that aren’t available in the farmers markets can likely be found in one of the area’s many grocery stores and food cooperatives.
Even the most passionate chef likes to take a night off now and then, and the area boasts a number of restaurants. Some establish-ments are great places to take the whole family without busting the budget, while others are perfect for a special night out on the town.
“Over the last few years, Lake Minnetonka has truly become a dining destination, with a bounty of new and veteran restaurants to satisfy every craving,” said Tiffany Winter, author of “Lake Min-netonka Eats.” “There’s truly something for everyone – wood-fi red pizza, Irish pub fare, classic American, mouthwatering prime steaks, amazingly fresh sushi. But it’s not only the food that’s the draw, many of the restaurants have stunning views of the lake. Getting to your din-ing destination is half the fun – by boat, car, bike, skis, snowmobile or whatever mode of transportation soaks up the best views of the lake.”
Drinking local is also easily done with a wide variety of breweries, wineries and distilleries located in, or just a short drive outside of, the Lake Minnetonka area.

COLLABORATIVESPIRIT APPARENTA pride in community and a willingness to work together characterize
the many forms of government that serve the Lake Minnetonka area.
LaDonna Hoy, executive director of Interfaith Outreach & Com-munity Partners, said the area can boast of great schools and libraries, a very engaged civic community and top notch police and fi re departments.
In the public safety realm, the community’s collaborative spirit is particularly evident. The area’s police and fi re departments typically cover more than one city, and fi rst responders regularly cross municipal borders to help their colleagues on mutual aid calls.
Lake Minnetonka unites the area, and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District and Lake Minnetonka Conservation District frequently work with the many cities along its shores. Both agencies are working hard to keep harmful invasive species out of the lake, as well as to improve its water quality and overall health.
Hennepin County provides many services to the area, including the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Offi ce Water Patrol, located in Spring Park. The Water Patrol is responsible for the response and investigations of water-related incidents within the county, and it provides services such as ice rescue, swift water rescue and airborne rescue.
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners is also working closely on the Southwest Light Rail Transit project. If the project is given fi nal approval, it will have a large impact on the lake area, especially in Minnetonka where a station may be constructed.
“The area can boast of great schools and libraries, a very engaged civic com-munity and top notch police and fi re departments.”

“In the Lake Minnetonka area, we can live a great life and have convenient services right in our neighborhood.”

HEALTHY LIVING RIGHT AROUND THE CORNERThough the Lake Minnetonka area is made up of a collection of
small towns, residents have a variety of places to go to maintain and improve their health.
Local clinics and hospitals allow residents high-quality health care access that people have in larger communities, Gillespie Center Director Mindy Anderson said.
“In the Lake Minnetonka area, we can live a great life and have convenient services right in our neighborhood,” she said. “You can drive down the street to the clinic, the community center – for free hearing checks, blood pressure checks, visits with the Senior Com-munity Services outreach worker – the gym/fi tness center and visit your local dentist or eye doctor.”
The wide variety of clinics operating in the area make it easy to see a doctor, pediatrician, dentist, optometrist or chiropractor who is nearby. People also have their choice of a number of facilities to improve their physical and mental well being, such as gyms, yoga studios and wellness centers. Trails like the Dakota Rail Trail and Luce Line make it easy and safe to walk, jog, run or bicycle outside.
Nonprofits like Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners (IOCP), Western Communities Action Network, Inc. (WeCAN) and local food shelves also contribute to the community’s health. The organizations help families going through fi nancial hardships put nutritious food on their tables. During the summer, their services are particularly needed with families whose children are no longer getting breakfast and lunch at school.

TRADITIONS ONTHE LAKESIDE
“Sailing is inter-generational, co-ed and the great equalizer...If you are ready and willing--you can become able.”
— WCSC parent and volunteer Elli Ansari
For generations, Lake Minnetonka has been a gathering place for those in love with the water — eager to escape winter hiberna-
tion to swim or sail. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Wayzata Yacht Club (WYC) has long been a gathering place for water enthusiasts, and one of its most enduring programs has been the Wayzata Community Sailing Center (WCSC), a nonprofi t organiza-tion established by boosters at the WYC as a place for the community to learn both sailing and the important life lessons that it can teach.
“I am involved because, like many parents, our family received so many gifts that keep on giving from WCSC,” said WCSC parent and volunteer Elli Ansari. “This place on the lake and the activity of sailing had a profound and lifelong impact on our daughter. Sailing is inter-generational, co-ed and the great equalizer. WCSC’s rallying fl ag is is simply, ‘Sailing For Everyone!’ If you are ready and willing — you can become able.”
WCSC is one of only 25 centers in the United States to have the U.S. Sailing designation of Community Sailing Center, with the responsibil-ity to provide affordable access through a wide variety of programs, clinics, events and fundraising efforts to lake area residents and the region. Nearly 1,000 people use the WCSC during sailing season — Providence Academy and Wayzata, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Orono and Chanhassen high schools and the University of Minnesota and University of St. Thomas call it home port.
The WCSC is engaged in a capital campaign, as it has outgrown its current building. The vision for the new center includes a large gather-ing room, lab, kitchen facilities and handicap accessibility in order to serve more people all year round. Expanded offerings could include STEM clinics, nautical history and water safety classes.

“I think that the biggest strength is the high quality of our teachers and the quality of programs that we’ve been able to put in place over the last seven or eight years.”
- Minnetonka Superintendent Dennis Peterson
When choosing a place to live, examining the strengths of the local school district is often foremost in many parents’ minds,
and with good reason: a solid education is a critical part of every child’s development.
In the Lake Minnetonka area families are fortunate to have choice options, between several respected private and parochial schools and four public districts that placed in the top ten in the Niche 2015 Best High Schools of Minnesota Rankings: Minnetonka, Wayzata, Orono, and Mound Westonka in the Westonka District. Additionally, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 U.S. News Best High Schools Rankings, of Minnesota’s 774 high schools, Minnetonka ranked fourth in the state.
“I think that the biggest strength is the high quality of our teachers and the quality of programs that we’ve been able to put in place over the last seven or eight years,” said Dr. Dennis Peterson, superinten-dent of Minnetonka School District. In addition to displaying above average scores in reading and mathematics profi ciency and college readiness, Minnetonka High School students have the opportunity to take both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. Districtwide, the Navigators program guides high-achieving students, and teachers and administrators have maintained a goal over the last three years to support average and struggling students, contributing to the overall strong performance of the district.
The Spanish and Chinese language immersion programs have thrived at the elementary and middle school levels, and have now reached the high school with the inaugural class of students.

From small and family-owned businesses to franchises, from retail to banking, realty to restaurants and home goods, the perfect gift,
meal, event, trip, outfi t or room — if you can dream it, you can fi nd it in one of the thousands of businesses that call Lake Minnetonka home.
Because of its culture of lake recreation, the Lake Minnetonka area has a high number of water-related businesses. Boat sales, recreation equipment stores, marinas, and lakeside restaurants are all plenti-ful. High-priced homes also create a competitive real estate market for those looking to put their name on the sale of a luxurious abode.
While quality goods and services are prized by residents and visi-tors alike, a sense of giving back to the community also runs strong in the philosophies of many local businesses, particularly those that allow customers to shop with purpose. Since 2011 ReSale101, adjacent to Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners at 1605 County Road 101 North in Plymouth, has given local shoppers the opportunity to donate and purchase clothing, accessories, furniture, home accents and other items in a way that directly assists the clients of IOCP — families and individuals working to move out of poverty. IOCP clients interested in shopping at ReSale 101 consult with case managers and are given gift cards, allowing them to shop for items that match their personal style.
“We knew our clients needed clothing for their kids, professional clothes for work and things for their houses as they transitioned,” said Liz Erstad-Hicks, IOCP Community Engagement Manager, of the birth of ReSale 101. “We wanted to make sure people in our community had access to those things, and we also knew that our community was very generous and often wanted to donate things like that. It’s a great way to serve families with dignity and respect. They have the same great selection that all our customers do and they can fi nd things that help them feel confi dent.”MA

PETS ADORED IN LAKE-AREACOMMUNITIES
AdvertisersTonka Pets 61
“This has been a great community for us to be a part of — the people here really are passionate about their pets.”
— Kati Jackson, store manager, Minnetonka Chuck & Don’s.
Many local pet owners would agree that four-legged companions thrive in Lake Minnetonka’s communities, thanks to services
provided by pet-centered businesses, several highly ranked local veterinarians, a variety of pet training and grooming facilities, dog friendly patios and retail shops, and of course the area’s many be-loved dog parks.
Several annual events also celebrate furry members of the family, including the Daschund Races at James J. Hill Days in Wayzata, and the Pet Fashion Show at Excelsior Girls Night Out.
“This has been a great community for us to be a part of — the people here really are passionate about their pets,” said Kati Jackson, store manager of the Minnetonka Chuck & Don’s. The independent pet food and product supplier also has a location in Wayzata, and Chuck & Don’s stores develop relationships with local rescue groups and chari-ties that benefi t animals, allowing customers to support their work.
One such area organization that is Excelsior’s Northstar Shih Tzu Rescue, which operates as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services.
“Owners come in and ask a lot of great questions,” said Jackson. “They are already really educated, so we get to meet a lot of fun pets who are obviously adored.”

BY LISA STEVENS
The wonders of Lake Minnetonka have been touted to tourists and residents alike for over 150 years. Early on, newspaper editors and land speculators
wrote about the health benefi ts of the lake’s mild summer climate, and as tourism increased, illustrated souvenir tourist guides lured travelers from around the world with descriptions of luxurious hotels, massive steamboats, amusement parks, and all manner of lake activities.
Summer cottage communities sprouted, and eventually, so did substantial year-round homes. As people began to choose the lake for permanent residency, guides and directories were written – much like this one – to promote local busi-nesses, schools, churches and civic organizations that catered to Lake Minnetonka residents and their particular needs.
Historic guides like those pictured here are a great resource for historians and are often used to aid them in their research. It’s likely that the lifestyle guide you are reading now may fascinate future historians as they learn about Lake Min-netonka in 2015.
This year the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka, Wayzata and Westonka Historical Societies collaborated to produce “Images of America: Lake Minnetonka” from Arcadia Publishing, now in its third printing. The book combines the photo col-lections and research of the three organizations, and the authors also consulted many historic tourist and resident guides to help them present an accurate picture of lake area history. In fact, the book serves as something of a tour guide to the past – highlighting the businesses and organizations that served lake residents over the past century. Like the guides of old, the book contains more photos than text, and while it does feature familiar commercial shots, it also includes many never-before-published candid photos taken by amateurs over the decades, al-lowing glimpses of everyday life.
“Images of America: Lake Minnetonka” is available from the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society, Wayzata Historical Society and Westonka His-torical Society, as well as from local merchants and from the publisher at www.arcadiapublishing.com.
Stevens is a volunteer with the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society.
