Welcome to the 2015-2016 Chaska Lifestyle Guide. What makes Chaska such a welcoming community?

For this year’s guide we asked for your advice and called upon a random sampling of residents to tell us what they love about living here. Throughout our 2015-16 Chaska Lifestyle Guide, you’ll see what they enjoy about the city, the community, the businesses and all the other amenities that make Chaska not just where they live but what makes it their home.

The Lifestyle Guide is a compilation of important informa-tion — a single source for lists of services, names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Keep it handy; use it often.

Our apologies in advance for omissions or for changes that occur after publication. Please notify us of information that needs to be updated so it can be kept current throughout the year.

If you would like additional copies of this publication, call our Circulation Department at 952-345-6682. Send information for the Lifestyle Guide to Amanda McKnight at [email protected].

Chaska’s employment opportunities, education system, di-verse population and strong sense of community have helped earn the community the designation of one of the best small towns in the United States. This Money Magazine recognition reinforces Chaska’s mission of being “The Best Small Town in Minnesota.”

Chaska maintains a strong, diversifi ed light-industry base. Attracting and preserving high quality jobs is a priority of the city and is consistent with its long-term vision of being a place for residents to both live and work.

Despite recent growth, Chaska retains its small town charm. The image of a caring and active community, where people meet and greet each other on the street, continues to be fostered even as the population grows.

Established in 1851, Chaska has a core historic downtown that serves as a focal point for both commercial development and social activities. Those who live in Chaska continue to enjoy ice cream socials and band concerts in City Square Park. These and other activities are designed to strengthen the community and support shared community values.

Outdoor recreation enthusiasts enjoy the community’s trail system, expansive parks, two swimming beaches, and a new disc golf course. Chaska also has an extensive year-round recreation program for children and adults, including seniors.

Chaska is also home to a new curling center as well as Hazeltine National Golf Club, site of several major golfi ng tournaments for men, women and seniors, including the 2016 Ryder Cup.

President, Chaska Historical Society

With a passion for Chaska history, a few artifacts stored in various garages, and

a commitment to collect, record, preserve and share that history, the members of the Chaska Historical Society began its 35-year presence in Chaska.

Membership has grown from three individu-als at its inception in 1980 to a group of over 165. Collections include thousands of pictures and artifacts that are catalogued and archived into a searchable computer database. Many enjoy perusing the collection of Chaska Heralds dating back to 1862, which are housed in the history center.

With the city’s substantial support, the historical society has a permanent home in the Brinkhaus livery stable at 112 West Fourth Street in downtown Chaska. The society creates rotating exhibits and an annual newsletter, pro-vides informational talks to groups, and supports

the publication of history-oriented research, including books, and, on a smaller scale, snippets from history for the Herald.

Much of what we do is done quietly — the archiving process for pictures and artifacts, for example, which involves eight or nine volunteers alone. These workers meticulously hand-record information from the donors as to an item’s signifi cance to Chaska, identify artifacts using standard museum nomenclature, photograph all artifacts and scan each picture, enter all of this information in the database, then classify each item before determining its appropriate stor-age location. That location is then entered into the database for easy retrieval. A tedious but necessary process, some form of archiving has been done with artifacts since the society began.

We have taken it to the next level, however, with the computer database of this information, begun in around 2005, which has kept many volunteers busy for the past 10 years. Our vol-unteers are now within a year or two of being completely caught up with the backlog of the

society’s collection. Over 8,000 photographs and 4,000 items have been entered into the database.

The society would like to do so much more — we’d like to enhance our online presence, for example, and have the photograph collection available online for researchers and other in-terested people. We’d like to streamline some of our policies and essentially clarify the society’s infrastructure for incoming volunteers.

With these goals in mind, and a willingness to encourage other history-related projects, we invite you to volunteer with us! Whether you’d like to do research on your own schedule or meet with oth-ers during a scheduled work time at the center, we are fl exible and willing to work with your schedule!

“A must-see destination is City Square Park, with its picturesque gazebo and towering shade trees.”

-Greg Swan

Chaska is ideally situated in the heart of the southwest metro, with quick and easy access to major regional

attractions such as Valleyfair, Canterbury Downs, Lake Minnetonka, the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, Murphy’s Landing and the Renaissance Festival grounds. But even with all that fun beckoning one to hit the road, there are more than a few good reasons to stick around town, too.

Chaska boasts some 70 miles of trails with connections to sev-eral major trail networks, including brand new connections to the Southwest LRT trail and one to downtown Carver. “You can go from Shakopee on the south to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on the north, without ever crossing a road and passing through our scenic ravine system,” notes Chaska Mayor Mark Windschitl.

An abundance of parks give residents plenty of places to relax and unwind with a host of activities including City Square Park’s Friday night Concerts in the Park and ball games at Chaska’s historic Ath-letic Park. Be sure to check out the newly renovated Firemen’s Park in downtown Chaska. The park recently underwent a $20 million face-lift to add a six-lane curling rink, restaurant and event center as well as a host of park improvements including a stage, new beach, interpretive displays and new playground equipment.

“This redeveloped park will be a major attraction to our historic downtown core,” says Windschitl.

Chaska’s historic downtown is a point of pride for the city and its residents. At its center is the eye-catching City Square Park.

“A must-see destination is City Square Park, with its picturesque gazebo and towering shade trees,” says resident Greg Swan. The park, situated just a few blocks north of the Minnesota River, is sur-rounded by numerous historic buildings and residences as well as shops and restaurants.

On Chaska’s northern border sits the impressive University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum with more than 1,100 acres of gardens showcasing trees, fl owers, shrubs and seasonal exhibits. The arboretum is an oasis of beauty and calm as well as a great source for landscaping ideas.

“With the addition of more ethnicchoices, I rarely have to leave to surrounding cities.”

- Pascha Derkevics

From American classics like burgers, fries and shakes to ethnic specialties like sushi, Szche-

wan duck and tamales, Chaska offers a good variety of food options for its hungry eaters.

The city boasts a number of restaurants, with most concentrated in either the downtown area or in the Chaska Commons shopping center. Diners will fi nd plenty of fast food restaurants, fast casual options and family-friendly eateries.

“I love the local food here,” says resident Pascha Derkevics. “With the addition of more ethnic choices, I rarely have to leave to surrounding cities.”

Visitors can sample the area’s edible offerings at the annual Taste of Chaska in City Square Park. The event takes place each May and fi lls the park with local food vendors showcasing their specialties. The event also features a beer and wine tent that allows adults to sample locally crafted brews and wines. “The Taste of Chaska is great!” says Derkevics. “Just a ‘taste’ of what Chaska has to offer.”

Each summer, the city plays host to two farmers markets. On Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. — 1 p.m., the Chaska Farmers Market is held in the parking lot at the Carver County Government Center off of Beech Street. This market, which is open to the public, is part of a health initiative focused on county government employees.

The Chaska Downtown Farmers Market, new in 2015, takes place Wednesday evenings from 3 — 7 p.m. in City Square Park. This public market is organized by the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce and features fresh produce, food trucks, entertainment and a variety of handmade products ranging from soaps and butters to honey and teas.

Thousands crowded into City Square Park for Taste of Chaska.

In 2015, the Washington Post ranked Chaska High School 11th among the top 25 of the state’s most challenging high schools.

Many of the city’s essential institutions are located in the heart of the downtown. City offi ces, the library

and the police department all share space under the red roof of Chaska City Hall between Fourth and Fifth streets west of Highway 41. Next door to City Hall, visitors can read up on the city’s history at the Chaska History Center, located in an old livery stable.

As the county seat, Chaska is also home to the Carver County Govern-ment Center. The large complex, which includes the jail and courthouse, is located on the east side of downtown, between Beech Street and Courthouse Lake. Those looking to obtain a marriage license, pay their property taxes or obtain an immunization through the Public Health clinic, can take care of all their business at the government center.

Chaska has numerous schools and educational programs, many of which have been recognized for excellence. In 2015, Chaska High School was ranked 11th among the top 25 of the state’s most chal-lenging high schools, according to the Washington Post.

“We are home to highly regarded public and private educational institutions, with both a private and public high school residing in the community,” notes Mayor Mark Windschitl.

Chaska is part of the Eastern Carver County School District (District 112). The city has one kindergarten center, three elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school. The district also offers a Span-ish immersion program for students from kindergarten to fi fth grade.

In addition to its public schools, Chaska has several non-public schools, private schools and parochial schools.

CHASKA ORDINANCES

Winter ParkingChaska follows a calendar parking schedule for on-street parking dur-ing the winter. The ordinance ap-plies to all public parking–streets, alleys, parking lots. From Nov. 1 to April 1, whenever 2 inches of snow accumulates to require plowing, vehicles must park on the even-numbered side of the street on even-numbered days of the month; and on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days. For residents’ convenience, the city counts the day as beginning at 8 a.m.

Noise/Odor OrdinanceThere is a noise ordinance prohibit-ing loud, unnecessary or unusual noises that annoy, disturb, injure or endanger the comfort, repose, health, peace, safety or welfare of others. The ordinance also prohib-its offensive odors.

Alarm SystemsWhen alarm systems are installed, certain requirements must be met. No alarm systems, except those for fi nancial institutions and public buildings, may be connected directly to the county public safety

communications center. Neither may a system have an automatic dialer that dials directly into the center. To assure both proper in-stallation and maintenance, there is a penalty fee for false alarms.

Summer Lawn Watering The city of Chaska has an or-dinance regarding water usage effective May 1-Sept. 30. Compli-ance is based on an odd-even cycle of watering. You are required to limit your lawn sprinkling and other non-essential water use based on your address and the calendar day

of the month. Even-numbered ad-dresses water on even numbered calendar days; odd-numbered ad-dresses sprinkle on odd numbered days.

Compliance with this ordinance is mandatory. Failure to comply may result in fi nes and/or termination of water service. New seed or sod is exempt from the ordinance until it becomes established.Commercial, industrial and resi-dential automated irrigation sys-tems are required to follow the same guidelines.

Chaska is a southwestern suburb of the Twin Cities, only 30 minutes from downtown Minneapolis and 25 minutes from the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. The southwestern suburbs are some of the fastest growing communities in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, both in terms of population and job growth. At around 25,000 residents, Chaska is the largest city in Carver County and is the county seat.

Nestled in the Minnesota River Valley, Chaska provides the best of a thriving metropolis, with the many cultural and professional sporting opportunities in the Twin Cities, yet borders the beautiful farm fi elds of southern Minnesota.

Chaska is home to four industrial parks housing many well-known international companies such as Beckman Coulter, UnitedHealth Group, Lake Region Medical, Lifecore Biomedical, FSI and Entegris. These, along with countless other businesses in the community, provide Chaska with over 13,000 jobs, helping us meet a goal of being a community where you can both live and work.

The city of Chaska puts a high priority on creating community gathering places that provide a wide

variety of recreational amenities to our residents. Chaska’s historic downtown area has three large community parks, including our City Square Park, the historic Athletic Park baseball fi eld and Firemen’s Park. Each of these parks host numerous events during the entire year, giving residents ample opportunities to gather together and celebrate our community.

In addition to these parks, we also have many other recreational amenities in the community. A 200,000+ square foot community center with two sheets of ice, a pool, fi tness center, theater, art gallery, pre-school space and a senior center called The Lodge, is a highlight of the community.

We also can boast that we have one of the nicest outdoor baseball facilities in the state with Athletic Park. Built in the 1950’s, Athletic Park still has the large wooden grandstand nestled in the landscape of the Minnesota River Bottoms and is host to not only our Chaska Hawks high school baseball program, but also our Chaska Cubs town ball team, who plays there throughout the summer months.

One of our most utilized and popular assets is our trail system.

Chaska has over 70 miles of trails. We continue to add to this system annually.

We have a top rated public golf course in the Chaska Town Course along with the executive Par 30 Course where footgolf is also played. Our Chaska Town Course played co-host to the 2006 U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament with Hazeltine National Golf Course which also resides in our community. Hazeltine National has been host to both the U.S. Open the PGA Championship, and, in 2016, will be the host of the Ryder Cup tournament, the third largest spectator event in the world.

Chaska’s housing stock is very diverse giving every one the opportunity to live and work within the community. We have great schools within Chaska, easy connections to the rest of the metro, plenty of jobs and great recreational amenities to keep you in the community.

There is much more to tell you about Chaska but these are just a few of the high points. As you can see Chaska has many things to offer to just about every age bracket. Come see us. We would love to have you come to visit!

WELCOME TO CHASKA!

Police ServiceThe city of Carver has one full-time Carver County sheriff’s deputy on duty in the community. In addition, a Community Services Officer (CSO) works with the deputy and handles nuisance complaints and animal control.

Since its establishment in 1862, the city of Carver has benefi ted from an over-whelming sense of community spirit exhibited through a tradition of selfl ess contributions made by residents, community organizations, and businesses. It’s this spirit that has preserved Carver’s Downtown Historic District; which is one of the nation’s biggest on the National Register of Historic Places. The preservation of the Historic District is symbolic of generations of community stakeholders working to make Carver a great place to call home. Building on history, our community continues to evolve with the many new residents who have chosen to make Carver their home. The expansion of Highway 212 to a four-lane expressway, the construction of a 260,000 sq. ft. Mills Fleet Farm, and the development of Carver Station all point to continued investment in Carver.

Residents take great pride in being an upscale community with beautiful natural surroundings. The county offers a combination of a picturesque setting with growing professional opportunities.

Carver County is home to an array of recreational activities, including renowned golf courses, beautiful lakes, and miles of hiking and biking trails with some of the most breathtaking parks.

The following programs — many mandated, some locally initi-ated — are offered by Carver County Social Services, a department of the County of Carver. Many are available only to people who meet income criteria, but others are available on a sliding fee scale, while still others are available to any county resident. CARVER COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

116 Peavey Circle, Chaska952-361-1835Recyclables and household hazard-ous waste may be dropped off at this site, in many cases at no cost. The center also will collect items such as yard waste, electronics, appliances for a fee. The Center features a prod-uct reuse area and an environmental education clearing house. Items, such as composting bins and radon test kits, also are for sale.

Household Hazardous WasteHousehold hazardous waste must be disposed of properly to avoid en-dangering health and contaminating ground water. These wastes include: solvents, household cleaners, pes-ticides, paint, wood preservatives, aerosols, batteries, automotive oil and antifreeze. The best way to han-dle the waste – except those that are banned – is to use it or give it to some-one who will. If these options are not available to you, please contact the county for collection information. Sellers of automotive products may take used automotive waste, perhaps for a fee. Check before bringing the waste in. The county also schedules periodic hazardous waste collection programs.

”Chaska is a hub for medical facilities.”

- Denise Hedke

When health issues arise, Chaskans don’t have to go far to get medical attention. The city is home to a number of medical

facilities, clinics and practitioners.“Chaska is a hub for medical facilities,” says resident Denise Hedke.

“There are many dentists and chiropractors, in addition to the clinics and hospital.”

Chaska features a 24-hour emergency room/urgent care facility at its highly visible Two Twelve Medical Center, just off of highways 212 and 41. The center is also home to numerous primary and specialty clinics covering everything from women and children’s care to mental health to same-day surgery.

In addition, the city has medical facilities dedicated to providing physical therapy, eye care, oncology, imaging and hospice care. Area hospitals are located in adjacent communities and can be reached quickly and easily.

“I haven’t had to use any of them yet but I’m happy they are there in case of an emergency,” says resident Pascha Derkevics.

Chaska has a number of chiropractors and dentists, including or-thodontists and pediatric dentists. The city also has numerous clinics specializing in mental health issues and counseling services, including treatment centers for drug and alcohol addition.

For elderly citizens in need of care, several nursing homes, assisted living and memory care facilities can be found in Chaska as well.

For those without insurance or those that are under-insured, Carv-er County Community Health Services offers free or low cost health care and immunizations. Carver County Social Services provides mental health care. The CAP Agency serves Carver and Scott coun-ties with food and nutrition services for qualifying low income clients.

“It is one of the best community centers, not only in Minnesota, but across the nation.”

- Mayor Mark Windschitl

Whether it’s winter, spring, summer or fall, Chaska has many fun ways to make use of free time.

New in 2015 is the city’s curling center. The Chaska Curling Cen-ter features six lanes of ice and will host everyone from the beginning curler just learning how to throw a stone to professional competitors with an eye on Olympic gold. The curling rink is located at the intersection of Highway 41 and County Road 61 in downtown Chaska.

Professionals will also descend on the city in September of 2016 as Chaska’s Hazeltine National Golf Course plays host to the Ryder Cup. The competition pits the best golfers in the United States against the best golfers in Europe and draws attendees from all over the globe. Millions more will watch the event on television. “It will draw three times more spectators worldwide than even the Super Bowl!” says Mayor Mark Windschitl.

Golfers inspired by the Ryder Cup can try their skill at one of the city’s two public golf courses. The Chaska Town Course was designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills. It features 18 holes and sprawls over 285 acres of oak groves, open prairie and marsh-lands. The Par 30 is an executive course with nine holes. In 2015, Chaska added a footgolf option to the course.

Summer nights in Chaska are the perfect nights to take in a Cubs town ball game at Athletic Park. “I love bringing my kids and joining friends and neighbors at the games,” said resident Greg Swan.

Residents also love cooling off at the Chaska Community Center’s splash pad or at the beach at Firemen’s Park. Boaters will fi nd public access to water on both Lake Bavaria (Chaska’s only lake to allow motorized boats) and in Winkel Park, down by the Minnesota River.

On less-than-ideal weather days, Chaska’s massive community center is a hub of activity, offering everything from an indoor pool and theater to a fi tness center and ice arena. “It is one of the best community centers, not only in Minnesota, but across the nation,” says Windschitl.

In the winter, don’t miss the annual ice fi shing contest hosted by the Chaska Fire Department. Anglers compete for prizes donated from the local business community. All proceeds benefi t the volunteer fi re department’s programs.

SMALL TOWN FEEL – BIG POSSIBILITIESDowntown resident Pascha Derkevics loves the “Cheers” vibe she

gets in Chaska. “After living here eight years, I can’t go anywhere without bumping into someone I know,” she says. “I love that. I love the people here.”

Time and time again, residents cite Chaska’s small-town charm as one of their favorite things about the city. Couple that with great local amenities and quick access to the rest of the metro and it’s no wonder that Chaska consistently fi nds itself ranking high on quality of life lists.

“Chaska has all the benefi ts of a small town — great schools, safe neighborhoods, local pride — with the amenities of a top-tier suburb — gorgeous parks, national retailers, public transportation,” says resident Greg Swan.

In 2015, noting good schools, high home values and low crime, Niche ranked Chaska the second best suburb to raise a family in the Twin Cities metro. A study by ValuePenguin ranked Chaska seventh in safety among cities over 20,000 people in Minnesota.

“It’s a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” agrees resident Denise Hedtke.

Derkevics loves Chaska’s “unique historic feel and beautiful tucked-in-the-valley location.”

History plays a big part in civic pride in Chaska. From the city’s early days as a transportation hub between the Minnesota River and the railroad to its brick making days to its grand experiment with the Jonathan “new town” development, Chaska has a rich history.

Much of that history can be found in the city’s charming downtown and will be highlighted in Chaska’s redeveloped Firemen’s Park.

“I’m a downtown lover,” says Derkevics. “I love the history, old build-ings, the beauty of the river with the untouched forest beyond the river.”

BY LORI ANDERSON

Carver County takes great pride in being an upscale community with beautiful natural surroundings. It is home to an array of recreational activi-ties, including renowned golf courses, beautiful pristine lakes, and miles of hiking and biking trails with some of the most breathtaking parks.

While Carver County is preparing for forward momentum and explosive growth through 2030, we are steeped in a rich history that represents the culture, passion, and pride that has made our county what it is today. These attributes come together to make Carver County the best place to live, work and play. You’d be hard pressed to fi nd another place in the country that has so much entertainment, history and variety within a 20-mile radius.

In the past few years as the president of SouthWest Metro Chamber of Com-merce I have witnessed a very strong economic environment in the area. This region has seen millions of dollars in spending for capital investment, new and permanent jobs, and a strong economic and civic vitality for our city downtown centers and neighborhoods. The chamber works collaboratively with our cities, businesses, and other key stakeholders across the area to foster and advance a positive and progressive economic development for our region. The chamber sees itself as a conduit to assist cities in achieving their economic development goals.

The cities of Carver, Chanhassen, Chaska and Victoria cover the eastern portion of the county. However, there are neighboring cities in the region that offer their own unique venues and amenities.

Carver, the oldest city in the county, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The city features one-of-a- kind antiquing, summer concerts, recre-ational activities and a multitude of his-toric homes and commercial buildings. Unique businesses line its main street, and residents and visitors alike can’t help but enjoy the historic community! Traditionally recognized as a historic river town, Carver is creating a new chapter of its well preserved heritage. Jim McComb, a leading Twin Cities business analyst recently commented, “Carver probably has one of the most promising trade areas of its type in

the metro area due to the growth of the southwest corridor and the in-come characteristics of the trade area residents.” With an average household median income of $97,193, newly con-structed infrastructure, and location along the Highway 212 corridor, it’s become diffi cult for most to overlook the business and development oppor-tunities going forward in Carver. In fact, the Builders Association of the Twin Cit-ies reported that the city of Carver was second only to the city of Minnetonka in new housing starts in the Twin Cities metro area during the month of August.

Chanhassen offers a great quality of life and has been recognized in a host of national rankings for being a great place to live, work and play! The downtown area offers shopping, dining, lodging and entertainment – including the landmark Chanhassen Dinner Theatres – as well as a library and many service and retail businesses. Chanhassen has 11 lakes and 90 miles of trails for people of all ages to enjoy. Whether it’s dining out, seeing a Broadway-quality musical or strolling the region’s

best fl ora and fauna at the Minne-sota Landscape Arboretum, Chanhas-sen is a place for all seasons!

Chanhassen is a key stakeholder in continuing to create economic op-portunities and looks to continue growth in many areas in 2016. As construction wraps up in Camden Ridge, Boulder Cove and Olive Branch Estates, Chanhassen will begin moving forward on new housing developments. There are currently plans for Mission Hills, a senior living facility near the intersection of highways 212 and 101, as well as The Vistas at Bentz Farms, a single-family home development off of Galpin Boulevard and Highway 5. There are also planned expansions to senior living facilities at Powers Ridge and The Beehive.

In an effort to expand on the nearly 15,000 jobs already in Chanhassen, industrial growth will continue with the relocation of The Benard Group to the former SuperValue site along Lake Drive. The city has also been in talks with developers about a new industrial site at the former Holasek Farms site off Lyman Boulevard.

Chaska, home to the 2016 Ryder Cup, combines the best of both worlds — friendly small town and modern city.

Chaska is quietly nestled along the Minnesota River and has miles of scenic trails for hiking and biking, and parks that are easily accessible within the area . Chaska offers a historic downtown, unique shopping, dining, and lodging, and many dynamic attractions … includ-ing a world class curling facility opening in 2015. Hazeltine National Golf Club is Chaska’s claim to fame.

Set in beautiful natural surround-ings — where prairie meets woodland — Hazeltine is home to a championship course, award winning clubhouse, and is host of the prestigious 2016 Ryder Cup matches. Only a few miles away, the esteemed Chaska Town Course is also considered to be one of the best in the Twin Cities. Designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills, the Chaska Town Course sprawls over 285 acres of oak groves, open prairie and marshlands. Lush bent grass covers the playing area from tee box to green. Chaska Town Course is owned and operated by the city of Chaska.

If you are looking for small town charm, look no further than Victoria! Cobblestone streets, quaint neighbor-hoods and a thriving business com-munity make up the landscape of Vic-toria. Eleven lakes lie within Victoria’s boundaries and parks and trails abound for active and passive use. The Lowry Nature Center and Carver Park Reserve are major attractions, as well as one of Minnesota’s premier 18-hole champi-onship golf courses, Deer Run. Discover Victoria …a nd you’ll be glad you did!

In addition to all the awesome things each city has to offer, the entire region is bursting with exciting events and tours. Art Wanderer, Barn Quilt Tours, not to mention the new Minnesota winer-ies, breweries and distillery that have opened up, putting the entire southwest metro on the map. Be sure to check out the SW Minne Tour for those that are looking for a relaxing day of fun. The scenic tour will bring you through area communities that include Victoria, Waconia, Excelsior and Minnetonka.

This is a great way to see what the area has to offer — beautiful lakes, quaint downtowns, outstanding restau-rants, beaches, trails and more! As you can tell, the southwest metro area offers something for everyone! Whether you are here for the weekend or a lifetime, enjoy your stay!

‘HISTORIC FEEL’ MEETS ‘MODERN APPEAL’

Th is region has seen millions of dollars in spending for capital investment, new and permanent jobs, and a strong economic and civic vitality for our city downtown centers and neighborhoods.

“The historic district boasts numerous antique and specialty retailers, coffee shops and restaurants, an old time malt shop and walkable tour through Chaska’s rich history.”

-Greg Swan

Chaska has a robust business community, complete with a vibrant downtown and several industrial parks. The city is a major em-

ployment hub with 13,000 jobs.In recent years, the city has become a mecca for data center devel-

opment, largely due to owning and operating its own electric utility. Chaska currently boasts four data centers with a fi fth on the horizon. Three of those data centers are located in the West Creek Corporate Center near Engler Boulevard and Highway 212.

Chaska has two other industrial parks that contain a variety of businesses that make everything from bubble bath to medical de-vice implants. Those industrial parks are located on the north side of Chaska.

The city’s retail is divided into northern Chaska and downtown. In northern Chaska, residents can shop at a number of big box retailers and dine at chain restaurants at the Chaska Commons.

The downtown business community is an eclectic mix of locally owned restaurants and small businesses selling everything from sports gear and artisan olive oil to antiques and wine.

“Historic Downtown Chaska is a well-kept secret worth discover-ing,” says resident Greg Swan. “Positioned along the Minnesota River, the historic district boasts numerous antique and specialty retailers, coffee shops and restaurants, an old time malt shop and walkable tour through Chaska’s rich history in Native American culture and the brick industry.”

Many downtown shop owners regularly participate in themed shopping events, offering extended hours, specials and discounts to shoppers.

“Chaska business owners make their decisions thoughtfully,” says resident Denise Hedtke. “They have banded together for all of our well being.”

PETS

A HOME FOR EVERY PETPets have it pretty good in Chaska. Besides miles and miles of trails

for those much-loved walks, pet owners can choose from a host of services and providers in the area.

There are groomers and spas for pampering your pooches. There are obedience trainers and classes for teaching your tabby new tricks. And there are boarding facilities for Fido and Fifi when you’re away.

When animals are feeling under the weather, Chaska has several veterinary clinics in town and quick access to area animal hospitals.

For animals that have yet to fi nd a family, there are several local groups that help facilitate adoptions.

Valuecare Veterinary Clinic houses a cat adoption center with many cats available. Visitors are also encouraged to volunteer their time to help socialize the cats before adoption.

The Carver-Scott Humane Society has been working diligently for more than 25 years to fi nd homes for its animals. Despite lack-ing a shelter, the humane society works with volunteers and foster families to give pets a loving home while they are in transition to their forever home.

Like the Carver-Scott Humane Society, the Southwest Metro Ani-mal Rescue is a foster-based organization committed to the rescue of abandoned, abused and stray domestic animals. The group holds monthly Pet Adoption Days for its animals.

The city of Chanhassen does not require pet licenses, but both cats and dogs are required to have some identifi cation on them that would assist animal control in contacting the owner. Types of identifi cation include microchips, veterinarian-issued rabies tags, or any tags or collars with contact information and phone numbers inscribed on them.

Rabies VaccinationsAll dogs and cats over six months of age and kept as a pet are required to be vaccinated against rabies.

Kennel PermitAny household with more than two two dogs, more than three cats or any combination of four or more dogs or cats over six months of age is required to obtain a private kennel permit.

Carver-Scott Humane SocietyThe Carver-Scott Humane Society serves Carver and Scott counties as well as a portion of Hennepin County. The organization is currently without a permanent build-ing; all abandoned pets are housed in foster care until permanent adoption. The humane society frequently hosts pet adoption days at area locations.

To help an animal by fostering or donating litter or unopened pet food, call (952) 368-3553, line 4, or visit www.carverscotths.org.
