Lange’s Plumbing and Heating Inc. has been in the HVAC business since1992. At that time, most furnaces were built the same. If your furnaceneeded to be changed you would just swap it out with another. But likeeverything, things change; including the heating and air conditioningindustry. The technology became better and many companies started toinvest in air quality.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 Belle Plaine Lifestyle Guide. What makes Belle Plaine such a welcoming
community? For this year’s guide we asked for your advice and called upon a random sampling of residents to tell us what they love about living here. Throughout our 2015-16 Belle Plaine Lifestyle Guide, you’ll see what they enjoy about the city, the community, the businesses and all the other amenities that make Belle Plaine not just where they live but what makes it their home.
Belle Plaine is a charming community nestled in the beautiful Minnesota River Valley. Located midway between Mankato and the Twin Cities, Highway 169 provides easy access to this scenic area. Belle Plaine is conveniently located in southwest Scott County as a hub for many major thoroughfares.
With a population near 7,000, Belle Plaine has maintained its cozy, small-town feel, yet residents are fortunate to benefi t from amenities provided by Scott County, which is one of seven metro area counties.
Residents also benefi t from being just a short 40-minute drive into the heart of the Twin Cities, so there’s always something to do on the weekends whether it be staying in town for a day of antique shopping or heading to Minneapolis to enjoy a museum or traveling Broadway show.
Belle Plaine is especially beautiful in autumn. Located on the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, Belle Plaine is the ideal spot to watch the seasons change. Emma Krumbees Apple Orchard, Farm and Restaurant is also a popular local destination in the fall.
Whether you’re looking to settle down with your family or just want a quiet and scenic weekend away, Belle Plaine is one of Minnesota’s hidden gems.
This publication offers a directory of information and resources used by Belle Plaine area businesses and residents, especially those who are new to this area.
The Lifestyle Guide is a compilation of important information — a single source for lists of services, names, telephone numbers and email addresses. Keep it handy; use it often.
Our apologies in advance for omissions or for changes that occur after publication. Please notify us of information that needs to be updated so it can be kept current throughout the year.
If you would like additional copies of this publication, call our Circulation Department at 952-345-6682. Send information for the Lifestyle Guide to Amanda McKnight at [email protected].

“One of the biggest things we hear is we have that small town feel, but we’re still close to the metro and all those amenities.”
- Holly Kreft, city administrator
BIG FUN, SMALL TOWN
Small-town fun is always easy to fi nd in the Belle Plaine area. From BBQ Days and St. Patrick’s Day to the Scott-Carver Threshers
Festival, entertainment options abound. There are multiple medallion hunts and royalty coronations in a year’s time, giving further reason to celebrate.
Those who enjoy paintball, zip lines, bowling, horseback riding, miles of trails have reasons to visit, as well. Golf the city’s 18-hole course, or the three others within 10 miles.
Don’t forget to stop by the variety of parks throughout town, one of which houses the Episcopal Church of the Transformation, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House is also on the register and is a common stop for visitors and residents alike.
And according to City Administrator Holly Kreft, the local trails that connect the park system in town are well worth checking out.
“We have a trail system that we call the Beautiful Prairie Trail,” Kreft said. “It connects all the parks and connects the people to natural amenities. We’ve been building on it over the last 10-15 years.”
Forty minutes from the core of the Twin Cities, Belle Plaine is close enough to the city to enjoy its offerings, but far enough away to enjoy the quiet serenity of country living.

A TASTE OF BPThe Belle Plaine area boasts two apple orchards, a farmer’s market

Take a tour of the surrounding area fresh farmer’s markets, brewery, or even take a drive to nearby New Prague for some farm fresh creamery delights
A Chinese buffet, a doughnut shop, home cooking, a taste of the tavern and a little breakfast-and-lunch cafe with character all bring out the best of Belle Plaine in their own ways.
Of course, Belle Plaine is well known for its annual BBQ Days celebration. Any meat lover will want to try at least one beef sandwich, and some may want to pair it with a drink from the beer garden.
The Scott County Fair is just a quick summer drive away in neighboring Jordan for those looking to fulfi ll fair food cravings.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate any occasion with delicious food in and around Belle Plaine. And don’t forget the many picnic possibilities with so many parks around town.

POISED FOR GROWTH
People move to Belle Plaine for the small-town feel. Government offi cials fi gure that means amenities. The city of Belle Plaine,
as well as the county, has provided some of the best new parks and trails in Minnesota, including Veterans Park, the Tigers’ ballpark, and Blakeley Bluffs Park Reserve, with more developments on the way.
Belle Plaine’s city hall contains a license bureau and is right across the street from the post offi ce. A fi ve-member city council makes decisions about what is best for the town. Belle Plaine’s branch of the Scott County Library System is open four days a week.
City Administrator Holly Kreft said the council is specifically focused on economic development right now.
“We have a progressive city government that is actively looking to expand economic development and add new businesses as well as retain what we already have here,” said Kreft. “We have a lot of commuters here of course but are always looking to provide more choices locally.”
Belle Plaine’s municipal government consists of a mayor and four council members. The council members serve four-year terms, while the mayor serves two years.
The city’s joint Activities and Recreation Department with the local school district is also a very active part of Belle Plaine’s government, offering everything from Zumba to cooking classes.

As Scott County continues to lead the state in population growth, progress is evident throughout the community. Over the last several years, Scott County has managed to keep its budget in check while still investing in its residents’ future: from the acquisition of new parks and green spaces to developing highly successful transit partnerships (the BlueXpress commuter line and the SmartLink transit cooperative), from the construction of two new mixed-use library facilities to installing a high-tech fi ber optic ring, Scott County is truly committed to its new vision: “Where individuals, families, and businesses thrive.”
Residents are encouraged to
keep current on County news through viewing Board meetings (available online in “real time” and on-demand), visiting the website (www.co.scott.mn.us), tuning in to local government access cable for meeting coverage and other programming, following the county on Facebook and reading the award-winning resident newsletter (The Scott County SCENE). In terms of health, Belle Plaine is a great place to live a life of wellness. The town itself is home to a branch of Mayo Clinic Health Systems,
which is known to offer some of the best healthcare in the country.Nearby hospitals are top quality and within an arm’s reach in New
Prague, Shakopee and Waconia. Most notable is the St. Francis Re-gional Medical Center in Shakopee. The medical center offers family practice clinics, urgent care and an emergency room, as well as spe-cialized care programs for those with heart disease and cancer. With St. Francis and St. Gertrude’s Health and Rehabilitation Center just a short drive away in Shakopee, Belle Plaine residents can rest easy that specialized care and physical therapy is attainable if necessary.
Three dentists and a vision clinic serve the town, as well as an orthodontist and a couple drug stores.
The town’s well-known and established assisted living facilities are a big draw and provide senior citizens all the help they need to stay in the town they call home.
The city of Belle Plaine has proven its commitment to health and wellness by placing a huge emphasis on the trail system in town. Belle Plaine’s parks are almost all connected by a local trail system, which allows for activities from biking and running to rollerblading and skateboarding.
In the harsh winter months when running outdoors sounds like a special kind of torture, residents can check out a variety of fi tness classes through the city and school district’s Activities and Recreation Department.
“We have metabolism boosters and busters classes, strengthening classes, zumba, overcoming carb cravings,” said Activities and Recreation Director Chad Eischens. “It’s certainly an active thing that can help people with their lifestyle.”

RELAXINGON THE RIVERBelle Plaine residents enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, a hotel
with an indoor pool, tennis courts, and skating and hockey rinks, as well as 80 acres of city parks: Deer, Heritage, Veterans, Union, Prairie, Century, Meadow, Hickory, Chatfi eld Square, Creekside, Townsend and Community Dog parks.
The parks in town are all conveniently connected by the Beautiful Prairie Trail, and residents also have access to the Minnesota Valley State Trail that stretches all the way to Shakopee.
Blaha Memorial Bird Sanctuary commemorates the location of the original Belle Plaine settlement, where the borough started along the banks of the Minnesota River. In Court Square Park, the historic Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House, including its innovative-for-its-time two-story outhouse (go fi gure!), is a must-see for any local history buff.
Founders Park offers a National Register of Historic Places treasure — the Episcopal Church of the Transfi guration — and the burial place of the town’s founding father. Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge connects towns via snowmobile trails and pays tribute to pioneers who lived among the woods, prairie grasses, Little Rapids and even sand dunes abutting the Minnesota River.

There are plenty of new learning opportunities available for residents who aren’t full-time students, too.City Administrator Holly Kreft said one of the city’s proudest partnerships is with the local school district.“We have a unique partnership between the city and the school district to provide community education opportunities to
residents,” she said.

“The historical downtown helps with the atmosphere and has a nice mix of businesses that are established mixed with some newer businesses, too.”
-City Administrator Holly Kreft
EVERYTHING YOU NEED
Much of Belle Plaine’s economic base is centered on agriculture in the community, according to City Administrator Holly Kreft.
Residents enjoy the rural tone of the town, and often suburbanites will trade their immediate access to urban amenities for the more relaxed lifestyle that Belle Plaine is built on.
“We still have a strong agricultural base in the community, so there’s a suburban-rural mix,” explained Kreft. “We have Genesis Corporation and the John Deere dealership. I think people like to see farms around them to have that agricultural piece to their lives and add to the small-town feel. We have corn, bean and dairy farms nearby.”
Belle Plaine’s historic downtown area adds to that small-town feel. It’s small, of course, and only spans a few city blocks. But within that space you will fi nd a clothing boutique, jewelry and gift store, hardware store, bakery, and several diners and pubs. Downtown Belle Plaine is the perfect place to shop locally for unique gifts and trinkets.
What the small town may lack in terms of big-box retailers, it cer-tainly makes up for in local shopping. And have no fear! Belle Plaine has a large grocery store and pharmacy, both of which opened in recent years. So residents have no need to leave town or travel to get their groceries or prescriptions.
Kreft said the City Council has put a major emphasis on economic development in the recent past and plans a heavy focus on bringing new businesses to Belle Plaine in the future. The business community is served by the Belle Plaine Chamber of Commerce.
Kent Kocon came from Belle Plaine to the Scott-Carver Threshers’ 32nd annual consignment auction, swap meet and fl ea market, only to fi nd an outboard motor made in Minneapolis. (Photo by Ron Mornson)

“For those who enjoy a walk with their canine companion, a seasonal Dog Park was dedicated in 2013.”
-Mayor Mike Pingalore
FUR-FRIENDLY TOWNSince 2013, dogs have fi nally had a park of their own in Belle Plaine.
The Belle Plaine Community Dog Park is located in the 200 block of South Market Street and is the product of a joint agreement between the city and the school district. The park functions as an ice hockey rink in the winter, but serves area canines in the spring, summer, and early fall months.
The Carver-Scott Humane Society serves the area and is always looking for caring homes to adopt or foster rescued animals. The society also has a number of volunteer opportunities for those who may love animals but not be able to keep pets.
If Fido or Sparky ever get sick, the Belle Plaine Animal Hospital will be there to help, and West River Veterinary Clinic is also in town for four-legged residents’ health needs.
