SVLC Monthly January 2018 A newsletter published monthly for the families of the Stillaguamish Valley Learning Center Principal’s Message Dear Learning Center Families, I recently conducted some very cursory research to better understand why people willingly volunteered their time and energy to schools, churches, hospitals, community centers, missions and other service oriented organizations. The results I found were not surprising, but certainly more wide-ranging than I had originally thought. People reported they volunteered for such reasons as: • Bringing about social change • Friendship & support • Recognition & feedback • Connecting with community • Giving something back • Using skills in a productive way • Get out of the house • Gain leadership skills • Make a difference • Strengthen your resume • Be part of a team • Because of being asked • To feel good, and for many other reasons… Furthermore, underlying such personal motives stated above was that volunteering possessed meaningful purpose aimed to improve the greater good of humanity, and the general well being of our society. Whenever I work with our volunteer parents, or see them assisting and teaching our students, I so deeply appreciate that beneath the superficial appearance of “helping out” are truly personal, altruistic reasons for doing so. Please know that all of us on staff here at the Learning Center recognize and are grateful for the impact you, the parents, have on our students. Thank you so much!
