1524 – VERRAZZANO - Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European to see New York Harbor arrived and named it Nouvelle-Angoulême.

1609 – HUDSON – Henry Hudson explored the Hudson River in his ship, the Half Moon, for the Dutch East India Company from the mouth of the River at the narrows to Albany.

1624 – DUTCH – Founded as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and named New Amsterdam in 1626.

1664 – ENGLISH – The city and surrounding area came under English control and renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother James, the Duke of York.

1668 – YELLOW FEVER – First Yellow Fever epidemic, followed by other major Yellow Fever epidemics in 1702, 1795, 1798, 1805, 1819, 1822.

1776 – REVOLUTION – The Battle of Long Island was fought in Brooklyn on August 27, 1776, followed by the Battles of Harlem and Washington Heights. The British occupy the city. The Great New York City fire of 1776, destroyed one quarter of the city following the battle.

1785 – CAPITAL – New York served as the Capital of the U.S. from 1785 to 1790.

1789 – INAUGURATION - George Washington was inaugurated as the 1st U.S. President on April 30, 1789, at Federal Hall, in New York City.

1790 – POPULATION – New York has been the country’s largest city since 1790.

1792 – STOCK EXCHANGE – The beginnings of what became the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) were established.

1832 – CHOLERA – Pandemic reaches New York, followed by other major Cholera epidemics in 1848, 1854, 1866.

Formerly known as the Freedom Tower, it is the primary building of the new World Trade Center complex. The 104-story skyscraper stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. It is the tallest building in the

BROOKLYN BRIDGE, LOWER MANHATTAN (1883)

Brooklyn Bridge, Lower Manhattan (1883). Spans the East River connecting the south end of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the U.S. Its main span is 1,595 feet long. The bridge was initially designed by German immigrant John Augustus Roebling and the construction was later supervised by his son, Washington Roebling.

The southern shoreline of Manhattan Island had long been known as the Battery, and was a popular promenade since the late 1600’s century. The 25 acre Park is named for the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city’s early years to protect the settlement behind them. Castle Clinton (1811), built prior to the War of 1812, is the last remnant of the defensive works. It was America's first immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the U.S. from 1855 to 1890. Statue Cruises provides ferry transportation to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from Battery Park.

The origin of the NYSE can be traced to back to 1792, when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by 24 stockbrokers outside of 68 Wall Street under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street. The building is a 103 story skyscraper and is a symbol of New York City. The roof is 1,250 feet high, and with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 1,454 feet high. Its name comes from the nickname for New York - the Empire State. It stood as the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until the topping out of the World Trade Center's North Tower in late 1970. the placement and lighting ceremony of the large Christmas Tree in late November through December of each year. The gold statue is of Prometheus from Greek mythology. He is known for his intelligence and as a champion of mankind.

The Music Hall is a large theater located in Rockefeller Center. Its nickname is the Showplace of the Nation, and for a period of time it was the leading tourist attraction in the city. It has a seating capacity of 6,000. The hall is best known for the performances of the Rockettes precision dance company. During the Christmas season, the Rockettes present five shows a day, seven days a week. Their best-known routines are the parade of the wooden soldiers and the leg kick routine performed by the dancers in perfect unison in a chorus line and is included at the end of every performance.

The UN headquarters complex includes several major buildings. The Secretariat Building, shown in the picture above, is most prominent. The complex also includes the domed General Assembly building, Dag Hammarskjöld Library, Conference and Visitors Center. Just inside the perimeter fence of the complex there is a line of flagpoles where the flags of all 193 UN member states, plus the U.N. flag, are flown in English alphabetical order. Outside of the complex, the headquarters also includes two large office buildings (DC-1 and DC-2) that serve as offices for the agencies and programmes of the organization. The large 840 acre rectangular park is the most visited urban park in the United States. The picture above was taken from the south end of the park, looking north with the Hudson River and George Washington bridge in the upper left. Attractions include carriage rides, Central Park Carousel, playgrounds, Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater, Central Park Zoo.

Note – Because of deterioration, destruction from fires, population growth and urban development, few colonial era structures remain in the New York City area.

FRAUNCES TAVERN, LOWER MANHATTAN (1719)

The tavern’s Long Room is famous for being the location where General George Washington bid farewell to his officers on December 4, 1783, after the successful end of the Revolutionary War. In his farewell to his officers he said - "with a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take leave of you. I most devoutly wish that your latter days may be as prosperous and happy as your former ones have been glorious and honorable." He then embrased each officer, left the building, walked to an awaiting barge down the street. He travelled to Annapolis where he met with Congress on December 23rd and officially resigned his commission. He then left for his home at Mount Vernon. Today, the building is a tavern, restaurant and museum. It is a “conjectural reconstruction” of the original building which suffered through several fires and reconstructions

in the 1800’s. The small yellow bricks used in its construction were imported from the Dutch Republic.

SAINT PAUL’S CHAPEL, LOWR MANHATTAN (1766)

St. Paul’s is the oldest surviving Church in Manhattan. The chapel has hosted many famous worshippers. George Washington worshiped here on his Inauguration Day, April 30, 1789.

During the two years New York City was the country's capital, Washington attended services at St. Paul's while Trinity Church was being rebuilt. Hanging above Washington's pew is a painting of the Great Seal of the United States which was adopted in 1782.

TRINITY CHURCH AND CEMETERY, LOWER MANHATTAN (1698 / 1846)

The first Trinity Church building (Church of England / Anglican / Episcopalian) on the site was built in 1698. It was modest rectangular structure with a gambrel roof and small porch and was destroyed in the Great New York City Fire of 1776. The second church was completed in 1790 and was torn down after

being weakened by severe snows during the winter of 1838–1839. The third and current Trinity Church was completed in 1846 and at the time its 281-foot spire and cross was the highest point in New York until being surpassed in 1890 by the New York World Building. There are three burial grounds closely associated with Trinity Church – Trinity South Churchyard, Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum, and Churchyard of St. Paul's Chapel. It served as the headquarters of both sides during the Revolutionary War. General George Washington used the mansion between September 14 and October 20, 1776, as his temporary headquarters after he and his Army were forced to evacuate Brooklyn Heights following their loss to the British Army under the command of General William Howe in the Battle of Long Island. It became the headquarters of British General Henry Clinton and Hessian Commander Baron Wilhelm von Knyphausen following the Battle of Harlem Heights.

The Dutch farm house was an important location in the Battle of Brooklyn on August 27, 1776, during the Revolutionary War. It was the first major engagement of the Continental Army after the Declaration of Independence, and one of the largest battles of the war. It is also the location of what is known as the last stand of the “Maryland 400.” The unit suffered heavy losses while fighting delaying action of the oncoming British and Hessian troops. CONFERENCE HOUSE, STATEN ISLAND (1680)

The house is the only pre-Revolutionary manor house still surviving in New York City. On September 11, 1776, Lord Howe, commander in chief of British forces in America, brokered a meeting with representatives of the Continental Congress in a peace conference aimed at halting the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge rowed over from patriot-held Perth Amboy, NJ. The meeting lasted for three hours and ended with the Americans politely declining Howe's offer, leading to another seven years of conflict.

Richmond Town Historic District - is located in the center of Staten Island, nine miles northeast of the Conference House. It is a living history and museum complex with 15 restored buildings including – Britton Cottage (1670), Voorlezer's House (1695), Treasure House (1700), Christopher House (1720), Guyon-Lake-Tysen House (1740), The British troops occupied the Richmond Town area during the Revolutionary War.

Saint Patricks is an American Gothic Revival style Roman Catholic Cathedral Church and the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. The pointed, ribbed vaults of the Cathedral spread the weight of the ceiling more evenly, allowing for walls that do not need to hold as much weight and allowing bigger windows that lend to the natural light that floods the Cathedral.

The Statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States and a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France and was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas (the Roman goddess of freedom) who bears a torch and a Tabula Ansata (a tablet representing the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. It is 305 feet from the ground at the bottom to the torch at the top and was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The Island was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 until 1954. The island is named for Samuel Ellis, who purchased it around the time of the Revolutionary War. The Great Hall, shown in the picture above, was completed in 1900, and now serves as the Museum of Immigration. The island was made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965. Long considered part of New York, a 1998 U.S. Supreme Court decision found that most of the island is in New Jersey. Coney Island, Brooklyn (1900’s). Located in southwestern Brooklyn, NY on the Atlantic Ocean.

Coney Island is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort. The attractions reached their peak during the first half of the 1900’s, declining in popularity after World War II. Communities include, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, Sea Gate to its west and Gravesend to the north. Attractions in the area include the amusements, three miles of beaches and the boardwalk. Three rides at Coney Island are protected as designated New York City landmarks and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places – Wonder Wheel Ferris wheel, Cyclone Roller Coaster, Parachute Jump. Other notable attractions include - B&B Carousel, Bumper Cars, Haunted Houses, New York Aquarium.
