Preface

This manual is valid for the installation of the DAP Controller Lite software, Release 6.

IMPORTANT:

This manual gives information for setting up a DAP Lite IP DECT system. However, the

Business Mobility IP DECT is normally part of an IP network. The success of the installation

depends on the structure and components in the IP network. Make sure that you have

sufficient knowledge of the customers IP network.

The DAP Lite IP DECT is also a wireless data communication system. This requires

knowledge of radio signal propagation. The radio signal propagation in DAP Lite IP DECT

system requires a different approach than for the traditional DECT systems. The success of

the installation also depends on the radio signal propagation. Make sure that you have

sufficient knowledge about this subject as well.

No legal rights can be obtained from information in this manual.

PRODUCT DISPOSAL INFORMATION (EN)

For countries in the European Union

The symbol depicted here has been affixed to your product in order to inform you that electrical and electronic products should not be disposed of as municipal waste.

Electrical and electronic products including the cables, plugs and

accessories should be disposed of separately in order to allow proper

treatment, recovery and recycling. These products should be brought to

a designated facility where the best available treatment, recovery and

recycling techniques is available. Separate disposal has significant

advantages: valuable materials can be re-used and it prevents the

dispersion of unwanted substances into the municipal waste stream.

This contributes to the protection of human health and the environment.

Please be informed that a fine may be imposed for illegal disposal of electrical and electronic

products via the general municipal waste stream.

In order to facilitate separate disposal and environmentally sound recycling arrangements

have been made for local collection and recycling. In case your electrical and electronic

products need to be disposed of please refer to your supplier or the contractual agreements

that your company has made upon acquisition of these products.

At www.nec-unified.com/weee you can find information about separate disposal and

environmentally sound recycling.

For countries outside the European Union

Disposal of electrical and electronic products in countries outside the European Union should

be done in line with the local regulations. If no arrangement has been made with your

supplier, please contact the local authorities for further information.

1 IP DECT DAP Lite System

1.1 Characteristics

The IP DECT DAP Lite system has the following characteristics:

Applicable for PBX platform SV8100 and SL1100.

Maximum 16 DAPs (DECT Access Points)

Maximum 50 handsets.

Note: It is NOT possible to upgrade the DAP Controller Lite to generic DAP Controller.

1.2 System overview

The DAP Lite IP DECT system is an easy to install relatively small IP DECT system.

The implementation of IP DECT DAP Lite in SV8100/SL1100 is a stand alone DECT system

that is connected to the SV8100/SL1100 via an TCP/IP connection carrying the SIP (Session

Initiation Protocol) protocol. This means that in the SV8100/SL1100, the DECT extensions

must be assigned as SIP extensions. From the SV8100/SL1100 perspective, there is no

difference between a SIP extension and an IP DECT extension. The DAP Lite also supports

ISIP, however the functionality is only available when the handsets and the PBX supports it as

well. The figure below shows the IP DECT DAP Lite System Configuration. All connections

are IP connections over Ethernet. The following components are distinguished:

Page 10: SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual€¦ · SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual ... 2.4 IP Configuration Settings

Figure 1. Overview of a DAP Lite System.

Handsets

Handsets must be the type of DECT handsets that are supported on this type of IP

DECT system. Consult the supplier of your DECT system to find out which types of

handsets are supported.

DAPs

A DAP (DECT Access Point) is the actual transceiver.

The DAPs support up to 11 simultaneous calls and are for indoor applications. However,

a dedicated outdoor box can be ordered, which allows you to install a DAP outdoors. The

following DAP types are supported:

AP300C This type of DAP is the standard DAP type delivered until January 2013. It has internal antennas. Please note that this DAP requires a license.

AP300E This type of DAP is equipped with SMA antenna connectors, to connect an external antenna. It is deliverable till January 2013. Please note that this type of DAP requires a licence.

AP400C

DAP Controller PC

only initially needed.

This type of DAP is the standard DAP type delivered from January 2013 onwards. It has internal antennas. Please note that this DAP requires a license.

AP400E This type of DAP is equipped with SMA antenna connectors, to connect an external antenna. It is deliverable from January 2013 onwards. Please note that this type of DAP requires a licence.

AP400S This type of DAP is equipped with internal antennas and does NOT need a Licence! However, the maximum number of AP400S DAPs in the system is limited to 4 !

The AP400S cannot be mixed with other DAP types!

The DAP types AP300C, AP300E, AP400C andAP400E can be mixed in one system.

DAPs are powered by means of PoE. We strongly recommend you to use Power Over

Ethernet IP Switches.

IP Switch

The IP Switch connects the Ethernet connections together. Only use an IP Switch that is

supported for this DECT solution, preferably an un-managed IP Switch, because they

are normally transparent for IP Multicast. In case of using a managed IP Switch, please

make sure that the following settings in the IP Switch are correct:

The IP Switch must support forwarding “IP Multicast”.

“IGMP snooping” must be disabled.

The ports should be set to “Auto Negotiate”.

The ports should be set to “Fast Forward”.

The IP Switch should support PoE.

PBX

This is the SV8100 or SL1100 PBX.

Laptop PC (or Desktop computer)

The Laptop PC or Desktop computer is needed for initial installation and configuration

using the DAP Configurator software. The Laptop (or any other type of PC) with the DAP

Configurator is only needed during installation of the system. When the system is up and

running the PC is not needed anymore. However, for adding a DAP, you must connect

the PC (Laptop) temporarily. Please note that you don’t need the DAP Configurator for

subscription management. You can add a handset via a DAP WEB page.

Note: The name of the DAP Controller Lite software package is called “DAP Controller”.

When you install the DAP Controller Software, the DAP Configurator is installed. So,

the DAP Controller is the overall software package, the DAP Configurator is the

configuration tool.

1.3 DAP Planning

1.3.1 Requirements

The position of the DAPs depends on two factors:

DAPs must provide radio coverage for the handsets, in such a way that the sound quality

of the handsets is good or excellent.

The DAPs for the IP DECT Lite system should be installed in such a way, that one DAP

can see at least two other DAPs with a signal strength of -80 dBm or better. After the

installation, you can check this signal strength in the WEB page of the DAPs, because

there the RSSI value should be 3 or better.(See Section 11.5A.5 Network Status).

1.3.2 Simple DAP Planning

Before you determine where DAPs are needed, make sure that you have a map of the

area/building to be covered.

Mind the following items:

In an average office building the radiation around a DAP is about 20 meters. This

depends of course on the building materials and the size of the rooms in the buildings.

Mind toilets and elevators, which give a higher loss in signal radiation. In open space, the

radiation around the DAPs is of course (much) more.

Try to position the DAPs in open space rather than in rooms.

Also mind metal objects and metal (inside) walls, which may cause quite some loss and

reflection.

Please note, that by means of an estimation of radiation of the DAPs, you run a risk that

you need more DAPs after the installation is finished, or that you order more DAPs than

strictly needed. If you want to be sure about the number and the position of the DAPs,

you should perform a Site Survey with the special tool kit, the Site Survey kit.

1.4 Licences

1.4.1 General Information

DAP Lite Release 6 requires a license, if one of the following items is true:

Page 13: SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual€¦ · SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual ... 2.4 IP Configuration Settings

DAP Lite Installation Manual Page 13 of 106 © NEC Nederland B.V. 2013

DAP types, other than the AP400S are used.

The proprietary protocol ISIP is used.

I755x intrinsically safe handsets are required.

Software upgrade is required.

The DAP Lite Release 6 is licence free in case:

None of the items above is true.

The DAP types are AP400S and the number is limited to 4.

When your system requires a licence, you must order the license in advance. The license is

based on the PARI (Primary Access Rights Identifier) which is the worldwide unique system

identifier.

In case of a license free configuration, you will only get the PARI (eight digits number,

hexadecimal) and no license file. In case your system has a licensed configuration, you will

get a license file that contains the PARI.

1.4.2 Ordering a License

You can order the following items:

Number of DAPs

The quantity of DAPs (AP300C, AP300E, AP400C, AP400E) is in steps of 10.

This license also allows using the ISIP protocol.

I755x intrinsically safe handsets allowance.

This is an allowance license, so not based on the quantity of I755x handsets.

Software Upgrade Allowance.

To upgrade a Release 6.0 to a higher version, you need an Upgrade License. When the

license is activated, it provides a window of one month to install a higher version.

Please note that this license is made dependant on the system size. You have a license

for 10 or 20 (2x10) DAPs. :

2 INSTALLATION

2.1 Requirements

The DAP Controller Lite software can be installed on one of the following MS Windows

platforms:

Windows 2000 SP4

Windows 2003 or Windows 2003 Rel.2. Windows 2003 requires SP2.

Windows XP Professional, SP2/SP3.

Windows 7 (not the Home version!)

Windows 2008 with SP2 or Windows 2008R2

Note: The DAP Controller Lite supports the International (English US) version of the above

mentioned MS Windows operating systems. Other MS Windows language versions

are not explicitly tested but are not expected to show any problems. In case of

problems please contact your IP DECT Supplier, and clearly indicate which MS

Windows version is used and the nature of the problem.

Note: Together with the DAP Controller software, also a DHCP server and TFTP server will

be installed. However, you must start these servers manually. They will not start

automatically.

Note: Make sure that the IP address on your NIC is in the IP network segment of your IP

DECT Lite system. If not, adapt the settings on your NIC.

2.2 Installing the Hardware

Install the hardware first. This means that you must install the IP Switch, the DAPs, the PC

that you are going to use for the DAP Controller/DAP Configurator, the SV8100 etc.

Note: Before you install the DAPs, write down the MAC addresses of all DAPS that you will

use in this system. You may need them when setting up the configuration in the DAP

Configurator. (See Page 54)

Note: Determine which DAP is somewhere in the middle of Your DAP configuration,

because this DAP must get the lowest RPN number in the configuration setup on

page 54.

2.3 Installing the SV8100/SL1100/SL1000

2.3.1 General

The PBX setup for IP DECT uses the same procedures used for setting up standard SIP or iSIP extensions on either the SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 systems. The setup procedure consists of 4 sub procedures:

-Setting up the IPL configuration (IP addresses etc.)

-Setting up the IPL gateway addresses.

-Setting up the IP DECT configuration

-Setting up the IP DECT features

In the following sections, examples are given on how to setup the PBX. If the information is

not sufficient, consult the relevant PBX documentation for further information.

Note: Ensure that the extension numbers you want to setup for IP DECT extensions have

not been used already for other IP devices in the PBX. Also make sure the IP DECT

extensions are either not yet setup in the IP DECT configuration or are switched off.

If not, there may be registration data in the PBX which causes the handsets to

perform improperly.

Note: For SV8100 R1 – R3 Main Software: Please make sure all standard SIP IP DECT

extensions are placed in an unused IP Duplication Group. SV8100 Main Software 4 or

later will assign the standard SIP devices to a group automatically. iSIP IP DECT

devices are not required to be entered in an IP Duplication Group.

2.3.2 Maximum Configurations

The maximum configuration for IP DECT on SV8100 is as follows;

Maximum number of handsets: 50

Maximum number of DAPS: 16

The maximum configuration for IP DECT on SL1100/SL1000 is as follows;

Maximum number of handsets: 16

Maximum number of DAPS: 4 (AP400S)

Note: The maximum number of handsets is limited by the availability of ports in the SV8100

configuration.

2.4.2 Configure the PBX VoIP Gateway(s) IP Addressing

Actions

1. Navigate to Wizards > Advanced Items > IP SIP > Blades > VoIP Resource IP Address or if using the System Data commands then navigate to PRG area 84-26.

2. If using an IPLA card in an SV8100 system then enter the IP addresses starting from VoIP Gateway interface 1. Each gateway IP address handles 16 DSP channels so a 32 channel card will require 2 IP addresses configuring, a 64 channel card will require 4 IP addresses, and a 128 channel card will need 8 IP addressess configured. Make sure the IP addresses are correct for the customer’s network and are not duplicated on the network.

For an IPLB card installed in an SV8100 or VoIPDB in a SL1100/SL1000 you only

need to enter a single IP address for VoIP Gateway 1. Again make sure the IP

addresses are correct for the customer’s network and are not duplicated on the

network.

Normally the port numbers are left as the default values and start from 10020 for

RTP and 10021 for RTCP increasing in steps of 32 port numbers (16 RTP + 16

RTCP ports) per VoIP Gateway IP address.

3. Click the Apply button when finished.

4 HANDSET SUBSCRIPTIONS

4.1 Generic

Before a handset can be used on the IP DECT DAP Lite system, it must be made known to

the system. This means that it must be “subscribed” to the system. The procedure is

described in the following sections.

Please note, that each DAP holds a complete copy of all subscription records in the system.

In case any of the DAPs go down, you cannot subscribe handsets anymore. So make sure

that all registered DAPs are up-and-running.

When a DAP that holds subscriptions goes down, the handsets will be unreachable for a time

period of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the missing Subscriptions will be made active in other

DAPs. This will make the handsets operational again.

5 RETRIEVE SYSTEM DATA

5.1 Generic

The DAP Lite system offers the possibility to download the system configuration from the

operational system. This can be extremely useful if you do not have the system configuration

(anymore), but you are requested to do maintenance on a system. Note that only system

configuration data is downloaded. Subscription data is not downloaded, because the

subscription data in the DAP Lite configuration is only in the DAPs and not in the DAP

Controller PC.

To retrieve data from the operational IP DECT Lite system, your DAP Controller PC must be

connected to the same IP subnet as where the DAPs are.

5.2 Prerequisites

Make sure that the IP address on the network card (NIC) in your DAP Controller PC is in the

same IP range as the DAPs.

7 CHECKING THE SYNCHRONIZATION

7.1 What about Synchronisation

DAPs must be synchronized with each other to allow handset handover between DAPs during

a call. This means that each DAP should “see” one or more other DAPs in the air.

Each DAP has a cell around it, in which you can make and receive phone calls. The minimum

signal strength must be -72 dBm. However, for synchronization a DAP should receive signal

from at least one other DAP with a signal strength of at least -80 dBm (down to -85 dBm.) See

figure Figure 2. Coverage for Synchronisation

Figure 2. Coverage for Synchronisation

When DAPs try to synchronize to each other, there must be a hierarchy structure. The system

arranges this itself, and under normal conditions you don't need to do anything. However, in

exceptional cases manual intervention might be needed. When a DAP is started up, it will try

to synchronize to a DAP in the environment. Each DAP has its own unique identifier, the RPN

(Radio Part Number). The RPN is a hexadecimal three digit number in the range 000 – 00F.

The DAP with the lowest RPN will be the synchronization source. The other DAPs will try to

synchronize to a DAP that has the shortest path to the synchronization source. Therefore it is

necessary to install synchronization source right in the middle of the IP DECT installation. See

figure Figure 3. Synchronisation Hierarchy.

Page 79: SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual€¦ · SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual ... 2.4 IP Configuration Settings

7.2 How to Check the Synchronisation Structure

After you have done an installation, it is necessary to do a quick check of the synchronisation

structure.

You can simply check the synchronisation structure by means of the information in the DAP

WEB Page.

PROCEDURE: Checking the synchronisation)

Actions

1. Make sure that the system is running for at least 5 minutes.

2. Open the WEB Page on one of the DAPs.

3. Click menu Network Status. You will see the following window displayed.

Page 81: SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual€¦ · SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual ... 2.4 IP Configuration Settings

DAP Lite Installation Manual Page 81 of 106 © NEC Nederland B.V. 2013

4. Check the part “DAP Visibility status of DAP 000 with IP Address”.

Here you see an overview of the DAPs that are seen by this DAP.

Check:

that there is at least one DAP with an RSSI value (signal strength) of “3” or higher!

that all shown DAPs has a Phase Diff in the Bit range -7 to 7. (Frame and Slot must both be “0”. )

If there the above mentioned requirements are not met, you must change the position of

one of the DAPs. Section 7.3 RSSI and Phase Diff gives an explanation of these items.

5. Repeat step 1 to 4 for all other DAPs.

7.3 RSSI and Phase Diff

In the DAP Web interface, in the menu Network status part, there are two important items that

gives information about the synchronisation between the DAPs:

RSSI

The RSSI is Radio Signal Strength Indication. It gives a signal Strength value of the

received signal from another DAP. This value is in the range 0 ...14. However, for

synchronisation, the minimum signal strength should be 3 from at least one other DAP.

However, it is strongly recommended to position the DAPs in such a way that all DAPs

see at least two other DAPs with a signal strength of 3 or higher.

Phase Diff

The phase difference gives information about the actual synchronisation. It shows the

difference between the clock signals between DAPs. There are three indications: Frame,

Slot and Bit.

The “Frame” indication must always be “0”.

The “Slot” indication should also always be “0”.

The “Bit” value must be in the range -7 to 7 for ALL DAPs.

When the value of one of the DAPs is not in this range, synchronisation is not

established and handset handover is not possible.

When the Phase Difference is out of range, the following three items could be the cause:

Not sufficient signal strength between the DAPs.

Multicast problems on the IP network.

Too many reflections in the environment (due to too much metal in the environment).

8 CREATING AN ARCHIVE

An Archive is a zip file that contains system data and performance data. It can be used for

diagnostics and it can be used to analyse your system behaviour.

When you have problems in your IP DECT System, the support department may ask you to

create an Archive of a DAP and send it to the support department. The procedure below

describes how to generate an Archive.

There is also a check box called “Enable Logging” available. When Logging is enabled,

additional data is sent from the DAPs to the DAP Configurator PC. This data must be

captured in a Wireshark trace on the DAP Controller/DAP Configurator PC. So, when you

enable logging, you must also run Wireshark tracing on your DAP Configurator PC.

The Support department may ask you to switch on “Enable Logging” and simultaneously run

Wireshark on the DAP Configurator PC, to make a trace. Together with that, the Support

department will ask you to create an Archive and send it over .

There are two ways to create an Archive. Both are described in the procedures below.

Page 83: SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual€¦ · SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual ... 2.4 IP Configuration Settings

11 UPLOAD HANDSET FIRMWARE.

11.1 General

The DAP Lite supports handset firmware upload via the air. This is done by means of the

“stand alone” Firmware Upload Tool (FWU tool).

Uploading the firmware to the handsets has the following characteristics:

Upload time per handset is 4 hours.

Handset remains fully operational during the upload process. Updating does not disturb

the normal operation of the handset.

The user will NOT notice that firmware upload takes place.

Only when the new firmware package has been uploaded successfully and the handset

is in the charger for more than one minute, the new firmware is activated.

Upload process is fail-safe. Even when the handset goes down as result of an empty

battery, the upload process will resume when the handset is back again.

While upload takes place, one channel on a DAP is occupied. Therefore the number of

simultaneous uploads must be limited.

B Advanced Info: WHAT IS DECT

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication) offers a standardized technique for

wireless telephony. The application areas are many. The SV8100 can be equipped to support

DECT which means that you can use cordless handsets on the SV8100. Many call handling

facilities of the SV8100 are available on the cordless handset. The Digital Enhanced Cordless

Telecommunication (DECT) interface has been developed by the European

Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI). The DECT system is based on radio

transceivers and cordless telephones. The cordless portable telephone is called a Portable

Part (PP) according to the DECT standard. However, in this manual the portable telephone is

also referred to as handset. A radio transceiver in the DECT System is called the Radio Fixed

Part (RFP) according to the DECT Standard. Because the RFPs used in the IP DECT DAP

LIte system are part of an IP Network, the RFP is called a DAP (DECT Access Point)..

The DECT system has the following characteristics:

Frequency range:

1880 MHz ... 1900 Mhz Europe

1900 MHz ... 1920 MHz China

1910 MHz ... 1930 MHz Latin America

1920 MHz ... 1930 MHz North America (lower transmission power, –3 dB)

Handset average transmitting power : 10mW, (peak power = 250 mW)

Maximum number of calls/base station: 12

The radio area covered by a single RFP is called a Cell. The RFPs are located so that the

cells overlap and the PP can remain in contact with the DECT system when moving from one

cell to another (see Figure 4. Radio Cells). A group of cells belonging to one DECT system is

called a cluster.

Page 105: SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual€¦ · SV8100/SL1100/SL1000 IP DECT DAP Lite Installation Manual ... 2.4 IP Configuration Settings

DAP Lite Installation Manual Page 105 of 106 © NEC Nederland B.V. 2013

Figure 4. Radio Cells

The number of RFPs needed to cover a certain area (within which the mobile telephone users

might roam) depends on many factors such as:

The size of the area.

The nature of the area;

The number and the size of buildings in the area.

The radio propagation characteristics of the building(s).

Materials used for walls, floors, elevator shafts, reinforced glass, doors etc.

Strong magnetic fields in the area (e.g. as result of welding equipment, radar, etc.).

The amount of telephone users in an area, and how often they make or receive calls.

The speech signal through the air will always be encrypted to ensure the privacy of the

conversation. This encryption is done fully automatically, without the intervention of a

technician.

Before a PP can be used, it must be subscribed (registered) to the system. That means that a

relation must be defined between the DECT System and the PP. Subscrition is done by

means of a web page on the transceivers, the DAPs (DECT Access Point)
