Common Core MissionThe Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

STEMAmerican Recovery Act (2009)$700 million dollars (Race to the Top)State’s must have a high-quality plan to address the
need to (i) offer a rigorous course of study in mathematics, the sciences, technology, and engineering; (ii) cooperate with industry experts, museums, universities, research centers, or other STEM-capable community partners to prepare and assist teachers in integrating STEM content across grades and disciplines, in promoting effective and relevant instruction, and in offering applied learning opportunities for students; and (iii) prepare more students for advanced study and careers in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including by addressing the needs of underrepresented groups and of women and girls in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

Camp STEAMCamp STEAM is an opportunity for motivated, energetic middle school students interested in the application of mathematics in a fun and exciting way! Campers and middle school mathematics teachers will interact with community members that use mathematics in their careers on a routine basis. Students will leave the camp with a renewed appreciation of mathematics. Teachers will expand their own knowledge of the subject they teach, and can finally answer the question, “When will we ever use this?”

Testimonials My 2nd year of Camp Steam was as informative and as interesting
as the previous year . I especially liked how the kids discovered that Math is truly everywhere and that it can be fun. It has helped me discover new ways to reach and teach my students in math. One of the things I am going to do this year is the Math Journals.
Camp has opened up my educational experience to incorporate music and art into my classes. For my students who do not like math but like art and/or music I can now make better connections to those content areas. I have used some of the art projects into my teaching - the Fibonacci shell from art to demonstrate sequences. This year I plan on using the face proportion activity in my classes. At camp I saw students begin to understand how math is related to these subjects and some even explained how they are related to me.
