thirty-three time conference and 1999 nCaa Mountain regional Coach of the year eric Houle is in his 18th season as head track

and field and cross country coach at Southern Utah University. Since his arrival at SUU in 1992, the Thunderbirds have won 36

conference championships, including four summit League titles, 31 Mid-Con titles combined in track and cross country, an ameri-

can West title and one nCaa Mountain regional cross country championship.

in addition, Houle has coached 621 all-conference athletes, 243 individual conference champions, 23 conference athletes of the

year, 26 conference newcomers of the year, 25 NCAA national qualifiers, 85 NCAA West regional qualifiers and two NCAA All-

americans.

in 2007-08, southern utah cross country swept the inaugural summit League cross country titles, marking the tenth time the men have

capture the conference title and the eighth time for the women. the men followed up the feat the very next year for their third consecutive

cross country title during the 2008-09 season. the men also added an outdoor championship trophy to the case last year as well.

in 2006-07, Coach Houle led the thunderbirds to four conference titles, including a “triple Crown” season for the southern utah men. suu’s men captured the

Mid-Continent cross country title by finishing first through fifth to set a new scoring record and finishing a perfect race. The men then went on to finish first in the

indoor and outdoor track and field championships for the complete sweep on the year. The women joined the men on the top step of the podium during the outdoor

season.

For his efforst, Houle was named the Mid-Con Coach of the Year for men’s cross country, men’s indoor/outdoor track an field and women’s outdoor track and field.

in 2003-04, Houle led the thunderbirds to a dual Mid-Continent Conference “triple Crown” sweep as both programs won the cross country, indoor and outdoor

track titles, marking the first time in conference history that a program had won all six championships in one season. The cross country sweep was the fifth Mid-Con

sweep six years, with the suu women taking home their sixth-straight Mid-Con crown overall, while the t-Bird men won for the sixth time in seven tries.

Meanwhile, the women repeated as indoor and outdoor track champions to claim their second straight “triple Crown” and their third in four years, while the men

tasted victory in the indoor season for the first time in program history and notched their second outdoor title overall in the sweep.

In 1999, Coach Houle led the Thunderbird men to their first-ever NCAA Mountain Division Cross Country

Championship, stopping a streak of six-straight titles won by nationally-ranked Colorado, as well as knock-

ing off four other nationally-ranked teams, a feat no other collegiate team in utah has accomplished to

date. The win put the Thunderbirds into the national rankings for the first time ever (#11 overall) and

earned them their first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships, where SUU placed 21st overall.

Houle’s efforts garnered him nCaa regional Coach of the year honors.

On the track, the Thunderbirds have been just as dominant, winning 17 conference championships

while finishing second in 19 other conference meets and third six times. In June of 1999, Natalie Gib-

son became SUU’s first-ever track NCAA All-American, competing in the 400-meter hurdles at the

nCaa outdoor Championships in Boise, idaho. in addition, school records have been set or re-set

almost 300 times over the past 10 years, including 11 records this past season.

Overall, SUU has won 33 of 66 conference championships competed for since joining the league in

1997-98, while placing second in 22 meets and third in eight others.

in addition, Houle’s athletes have done it in the classroom as 15 thunderbird athletes have garnered

CoSIDA(College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic all-District VIII honors, with nine of

those athletes having gone on to earn Academic All-America accolades, over the past five seasons. SUU’s

men’s cross country program has also won two academic national championships in 1997-98 and 2004-05,

while the women’s program was academic national runner-up in 2002-03.

Houle graduated with two bachelor’s degrees from suu – in physical education and communication – in

1981, and added a Master’s degree in secondary education in 1998. Houle began his head coaching career in

1982 at salt Lake City’s Judge Memorial High school. in eight seasons at JMHs, Houle’s cross country teams

won 10 region and three state championships and had five runner-up finishes.

Houle and his wife diane are the parents of two grown sons, deric and nick, and reside in Cedar City. in 2004, Coach

Houle was inducted into the utah summer Games Hall of Honor in recognition of his career coaching accomplishments.

Sprint Coach • 14th Season • Southern Utah, 1998jeramie MURRAY

Jeramie Murray is in his 14th season as assistant

coach in the southern utah cross country and

track program, though this is his fifth season as a

full-time assistant. Murray will assist with the cross

country teams and will oversee the sprint, hurdle

and relay events.

a former thunderbird sprinter, four-year letter winner

and all-conference honoree, Murray graduated from suu in 1998 with a degree

in physical education. He then went on to earn a Master’s degree from suu in

education in 2000 and is currently pursuing a second graduate degree in sports

conditioning and performance.

during his tenure at suu, Coach Murray has mentored 61 all-conference ath-

letes, 47 individual conference champions and one nCaa all-american, as well

as assisting in 36 summit League team titles, including the 2003-04 dual “triple

Crown” team champions.

Murray, a USATF Level II certified coach, and his wife, Heather, currently reside

in Cedar City.

Throws Coach • 4th Season • Southern Utah, 2008nathan ott

nathan ott will begin his third season overall and

second season as a full-time assistant coach after

serving as a volunteer coach during the 2007-08

season. Ott joined the staff after a stellar four-

year career with the thunderbirds.

Ott finished his career at Southern Utah, holding the

school’s all-time mark in the hammer with a distance of

201 feet five inches. He also finished his career as an NCAA regional qualifier

and the Mid-Continent Conference champion in the hammer throw at the 2007

outdoor championships.

in 2009, suu throwers had one of the most record-breaking seasons in school

history as four school records were broken during the indoor and outdoor sea-

son. under ott’s tutelage, southern utah student-athletes recorded 25 marks

that rank in the top ten in school history in various events. In addition, five

student-athletes advanced to the nCaa West regionals, including Kristi Koplin

who qualified in multiple events (hammer, discus).

During his first year of coaching, his record was broken as he coached Greg

Watson to a record-breaking mark of 216 feet six inches in the hammer throw

at the SUU Invitational. Watson later qualified for the NCAA national competi-

tion.

ott is a native of Cedar City, utah and will work with the throwers in addition

to other duties as assigned. Medical Advisor • Season • Southern Utah

dr. darin “dutch” WorKMan

dr. darin “dutch” Workman will enter his second

season as an assistant coach with southern utah

university, serving as a medical advisor for the

team.

Workman is currently teaching in the Biology

department at southern utah university after having

attended suu as a student. He then went on to medical

school and began working as a Chiropractor in the Houston, texas area for

more than 20 years.

during his time in Houston, Workman worked with various high schools in the

area, particularly Kingwood High school and saw the team win three national

championships as a perennial powerhouse in high school cross country.

Workman has also worked with the u.s. olympic team, overseeing the care of

the u.s. diving team during the 2004 summer Games.

2009 reCaPSouthern Utah cross country enjoyed a wealth of success in 2009, including a pair of summit League champions, a team title for the women, a coach of the year honor and newcomer of the year award.

the year began at the idaho state invitational where the women raced to a second-place finish with the men running to a first-place finish. Thunderbirds swept the individual titles as Sharla Manuele finished the 3k course in 10:17.79 while Kevin sandall ran the men's 6k course in 18:45.27.

the teams then competed at the uC riverside invitational with the women finishing sixth and the men finishing in third place. Cameron Levins was only seven seconds off a first-place finish, crossing the line in second place with a time of 23:48.6. Levins' time marked a new school record on the course as Manuele's seventh-place finish on the women's side also set a new course record for the t-Birds with a time of 17:09.5.

Following a two week break, southern utah appeared on a national stage as the team participated in the notre dame invitational in south Bend, indiana. Levins and Manuele again paced the Thunderbirds with top finishes and SUU course-re-cord times. Levins finished the slow, boggy course in 24:11 with Manuele running to a time of 17:24.

the t-Birds defended their home turf the next weekend as suu hosted the Color Country invitational. Levins and Manuele continued their record-breaking seasons, finishing first in the men's and women's races and setting new course records in the process.

However, they were not the only runners to finish in the top ten as Diana Medina (3rd), Sylvia Bedford (6th) and Madalyn Olpin (8th) each turned in strong perfor-mances on the women's side. For the men, sandall and freshman Hayden Hawks helped the Thunderbirds capture three of the top four spots as the duo finishing

third and fourth, respectively.

southern utah was, once again, in the national spotlight the next week as the team competed at the nCaa Pre-nationals in terre Haute, indiana. Manuele and Levins were the top finishers for the Thunderbirds with Medina (21:43) also turn-ing in an SUU course record during the race. Levins finished with a time of 24:25 with Manuele recording a time of 21:16.

suu was back at home, following a break, as the team hosted the 2009 summit League Cross Country Championships. the women dominated the race, captur-ing every conference award, including summit League MVP honors for Manuele and Newcomer of the Year for SUU freshman Whitney Curtis. Medina was just behind Manuele in second place as the Thunderbird women finished more than 60 ahead of the second place team.

Despite Levins' first-place finish on the men's side, Southern Utah was just five points off a conference title, finishing second to South Dakota State. Levins finished the race with a time of 24:48 and was joined in the top four by Sandall, who finished in fourth place with a time of 25:26.70.

along with the team title for the women, suu head coach eric Houle was hon-ored as the summit League Coach of the year.

the teams went on to compete at the nCaa Mountain regional in albuquerque, New Mexico with the women finishing 10th and the men finishing 11th. Levins and Manuele were the story again for the Thunderbirds turning in the top finishes as each crossed the line in 22nd place. Manuele's time of 21:36.2 broke the previous suu course record by almost one minute to cap her career in Cedar City.

southern utah’s cross country team will enter the 2010 season with high

expectations after the successes of 2009. the women’s team has been chosen

as a favorite in the annual summit League preseason coaches poll after taking

home the title in 2009. the men garnered a second-place vote by the coaches

after finishing only five points behind first-place team South Dakota State.

the women’s team will lose one of its top distance runners after 2009 MVP

and athlete of the year sharla Manuele’s 2010 graduation. Manuele will remain

involved in the cross country program, however, as she stays on as an assistant

coach.

returning to the women’s team will be reigning newcomer of the

Year Whitney Curtis as well as first team all-Summit finisher

Madalyn Olpin and second-team finisher Shelli Richardson.

sylvia Bedford rounds out the scored returning women as

second-place runner diana Medina is anticipated to take a

redshirt season.

Freshmen Danielle West (American Fork, Utah/Ameri-

can Fork HS) and Emily Hills (West Jordan, Utah/ West

Jordan HS) will join the women’s team in the 2010

season. West came out of her high school track

career with all-state and academic all-region honors.

Hills also competed on the state level in cross

country, finishing in twelfth place at the state 5A

championship.

the men will also be competing without one of

their top runners as summit League MVP and

athlete of the year Cameron Levins takes a redshirt

season to focus on personal training and improve-

ment.

Kevin sandall will be the highest scoring runner for

the men’s team, after his fourth place finish earned

him first-team all-Summit honors at the 2009 confer-

ence championships. Graham Cheever will be the only

other returning member of the scoring team.

Several new freshmen will be joining the men’s team

including Robby Lee (American Fork, Utah/American Fork

HS), Eric Sandall (Elko, Nevada/Elko HS), Kyle Winward

(Enoch, Utah/Canyon View HS), Al Galan (Las Vegas, Nevada/

Liberty HS), Travis McDonough (Las Vegas, Nevada/Centennial

HS), Shinano Miyazawa (Orem, Utah/Mountain View HS), and Travis

McDonough (Las Vegas, Nevada/Centennial HS).

Lee comes from a two-time all-state and eight-time all-region high school career in cross

country. sandall, younger brother of Kevin sandall, also comes from a successful high school

career, competing on the state level and earning multiple academic all-state recognition.

Winward is also an all-state honoree.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE As The Summit League concludes its third decade as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the ascending level of performance among the 10 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues. Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing eld and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a national champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honorees. IUPUI�’s Chen Ni made history at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and highlighted the individual accomplishments in 2009-10. The sophomore became

The Summit League�’s rst female national champion, and fth NCAA titlist overall, when she nished rst in the platform dive. Also garnering national recognition was Oakland men�’s basketball player Keith Benson, who received The Summit League�’s rst national individual award for basketball performance when he was named the Lou Henson Award winner as the nation�’s Mid-Major Player of the Year. The level of performance in men�’s basketball continued to rise as The Summit League was one of just six leagues outside of the �“power six�” conferences to have both of its championship game participants compete with RPI ratings in the top 85. The Summit League had two teams post 25-win seasons, making it one of seven leagues outside of the �“power six�” and one of 12 overall in Division I to make that claim. Summit League champion Oakland set new standards for season League victories (17), winning percentage (.944) and tied the mark for consecutive League wins (16). The Summit League�’s Basketball Championship extended its visibility in 2010, as for the rst time in history all 14 men�’s and women�’s tournament games were televised, including all seven men�’s contests with a national reach via an ESPN platform. Overall attendance in Sioux Falls, S.D., was the second-highest on record and a new women�’s quarter nal session mark was set with 5,384 spectators. Several other sports also saw records fall during the 2009-10 campaign. In volleyball, North Dakota State set a new mark with its 37th consecutive League win en route to its second straight undefeated season. Additionally, the League set standards for postseason participation in both track & eld, where an all-time best 50 athletes quali ed for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Rounds, and women�’s basketball, where three teams advanced to postseason play. Academically, six Summit League teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. IPFW led with three teams on the list, including men�’s cross country, women�’s golf and volleyball, while another trio of teams, UMKC volleyball, North Dakota State women�’s golf and Oakland women�’s golf, also received accolades. The national reach of The Summit League continues to expand with member institutions selected as hosts for NCAA Championship events, beginning with UMKC serving as a co-host for the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship. IUPUI will serve as a co-host for the 2011 Women�’s Final Four and the 2015 Men�’s Final Four and be the host for both the 2013 and 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. League members were selected for several NCAA preliminary competitions with Oakland hosting the 2010 Cross Country Great Lakes Regional and 2013 Men�’s Basketball First and

Second Rounds and IUPUI serving as co-host for one of the four 2013 Men�’s Basketball Regionals. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league�’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000 at 10 member institutions: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invitation to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one additional associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men�’s soccer in 2011. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the rst round of the NCAA Men�’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation�’s attention when Bryce Drew hit �“the shot�” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts�’ baseball program nished the 2004 campaign with a national-ranking and became the rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State�’s 2009 softball team became the rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State�’s women�’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament rst round victory. The League has produced ve NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes and several All-Americans in the sports of track and eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professionals and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball rst round picks, a pair of NBA rst rounders and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two-time all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athletics.

Southern Utah University has an outstanding athletic tradition. The majority of

SUU’s sports are affiliated with the Summit League, with the exception of gymnastics

(which competes in the Western Athletic Conference) and football, a charter mem-

ber of the Great West Football Conference.

suu’s teams regularly compete for conference championships. this past year suu

women captured the summit League cross country title while the gymnastics team

took home the Western athletic Conference trophy. several teams on campus

advanced to the conference tournament in their respective sports with a collection

of individual athletes garnering all-tournament and all-conference honors.

the suu gymnastics team has been represented in nCaa post-season competi-

tion every year since 1991. this past season, southern utah was represented at the

nCaa national Championships in gymnastics as well as indoor and outdoor track

& field.

Ken Beazer was named southern utah’s ath-

letic director on dec. 21, 2005 and took the

reins of the program Jan. 2, 2006.

Beazer came to southern utah from utah

state university, where he has served as direc-

tor of athletic development for the past four-

plus years. While at usu, Beazer developed

and initiated the largest capital campaign in the

history of the school’s athletic department,

including fund-raising for a planned $25 million

renovation of romney stadium.

Prior to his time at Utah State, Beazer spent nine years at Snow College, the first three

as defensive coordinator on the football coaching staff and the final six – from 1995 to

2001 – as the school’s director of athletics. as a coach his teams ranked among the nJ-

CAA’s top five defenses two of his three seasons, while as AD at Snow he implemented

the college’s first Athletic Foundation Board as well as an annual giving program. He also

spent two seasons as a graduate assistant football coach at Washington state university.

Beazer is a 1989 graduate of Weber state university with a degree in broadcast commu-

nication. He also holds a master of arts degree in communication from Washington state,

as well as an associate of arts in the same field from Snow College.

Beazer and his wife, Cidnee, are the parents of four children: rhett, adrienne, Jadon and

Harrison.

Michael t. Benson was appointed the 15th president of southern utah university on november 10, 2006, by the utah state Board of regents.

Dr. Benson came to SUU from Snow College where he served as president for five years. Prior to his tenure in ephraim, dr. Benson was special assistant to the president and secretary to the university of utah, a cabinet-level position on that campus. during his presidency at snow, athletic teams excelled, winning several conference championships and finishing near the top of national rankings. He was instrumental in establishing America’s premier junior college football bowl game, the Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl, played each december in salt Lake City. dr. Benson currently serves as Chair of the Presidents’ Council for the summit League.

President Benson is the father of four children, emma, samuel, truman taft, and tatum anne. He and his wife debi, along with the kids, are regularly seen around campus and at all types of sporting events.

an accomplished athlete, dr. Benson was captain of the east High school basketball team and one of four sophomores on the team that won the 1981 utah state championship. He turned down track scholarships as a senior at east to enroll at Brigham young university on a leadership scholarship, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, English, and history while playing on the junior varsity basketball team. He has also competed in the worlds oldest rivalry, serving as a player/coach in leading oxford university over Cambridge in the 1994 Varsity Basketball Match.

President Benson has completed several marathons with his best time (2:41) winning his age division at the st. George Marathon. in 1984, Michael was one of only 19 teenagers to compete in the Boston Mara-thon, with his finishing time of 2:52 placing him in the top 15% of all registered runners. While President of snow College, he ran the st. George Marathon again, this time raising over $50,000 for the athletic department. He currently maintains a seven handicap in his favorite sport, golf.

dr. Benson holds a doctorate in modern Middle eastern History from oxford university. His critically-acclaimed book, Harry s. truman and the Founding of israel has led to many lecturing and consulting opportunities. Michael regularly leads tour groups to the Middle east where he is eager to share his love for and knowledge of the region. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in non-profit administration at the Mendoza school of Business at the university of notre dame.

located elsewhere on campus. SUU’s training facilities also include an olympic-sized pool. With a fully-certified staff as well as a student training

suu has a history unique in the annals of american higher education. in 1897, the entire population of

Cedar City, then a small pioneer town, engaged in the building of Old Main, the first building of the Uni-

versity. Beginning the project in mid-winter because of a harsh deadline imposed the the legislature, the

The SUU School of Applied Science and Technology offers 20 major courses of study as well as minors and pre-professional degrees in 26 additional areas. The

southern utah Crime Laboratory is housed here and the state Criminologist teaches in the Criminal Justice Program. suu’s technology education degree is the only

program in the western united states with a career technical emphasis.

In addition to master’s degrees in accountancy and business administration, the SUU School of Business offers bachelor’s degrees in nine majors with an additional

11 areas of specialization. SUU’s undergraduates consistently score in or above the 80th percentile on the ETS national field exam, including outstanding marks in the

its type in the west, the Sorenson Physical Education Building houses an Olympic-sized swimming pool, three basketball courts, five racquetball courts, state-of-th-art

kinesiology and exercise laboratories as well as technology-equipped classrooms.

SUU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers 20 major areas of study. Graduates of the College can boast an acceptance rate above 90 percent in accep-

college of Science

Home to 27 major areas of study, the SUU College of Science has seen 88 percent of its graduates who applied to professional

pharmacy schools and 72 percent of its graduates applying to medical schools accepted. the national acceptance rate for phar-

macy schools is 25 percent while the national rate for medical schools is 38 percent.
