Executive Director’s ReportHelen McGovern

Whenever our conversations turn to EFN’s “brand” in the community, we discuss the “Emergency” in our name. In 1982, during a period of economic uncertainty, community leaders joined together to address rising food-insecurity in Pierce County, creating EFN to be a county-wide distribution system as an emergency solution. The fi rst 400,000 pounds of food that we collected that year met an urgent need, but after 31 years of persistent hunger, we often ask ourselves whether EFN should de-emphasize that part of our name. Ever notice how “FOOD” is the biggest word in our logo? We’re collecting and distributing 15 million pounds of food annually in order to address an ongoing need, but is the situation still an “emergency,” or just a real and necessary mission?

• For the single parent working two minimum-wage jobs to support his or her unemployed spouse and two kids, the situation is an emergency.

• For the family, approved to move on base, but not

them) faced with loans, no jobs, and bills to pay, makes it clear that the emergency food that we provide to the 67 area food programs that we serve means the difference between having a roof over your head, affording transportation to get to work or an interview, having money to pay for medicine, or having to give up eating that day, week, or month.

Thankfully, people like you are there for us. Your generosity helped us provide 80% of the food distributed in our county that area food banks, meal sites, and shelters used to accommodate 1,381,602 total client visits in 2012. We hope that the demand will subside, but with cuts to food and rental assistance programs and higher unemployment, the lines at food banks are getting longer.

It is an honor to do the work that we do, and we are thankful to you for making it possible for Emergency Food Network to continue to successfully fi ght hunger in Pierce County.

anticipating that the cost of their deposit and relocation would leave them temporarily without money for food, the situation is an emergency.

• For the person on the streets, looking for a meal at a shelter or meal site, the situation is an emergency.

• For the homebound diabetic senior, supported by a monthly Social Security check and the kindness of community volunteers, the situation is an emergency.

Mother Earth Farm ReportCanyon Little

The 2012 growing season turned out to be a highly productive and fruitful one for Mother Earth Farm. Our annual Draft Horse Plow event in early April helped to get the farm moving.

We also added a new 3,000 square-foot greenhouse with the help of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation and the Green Partnership Fund. For a few months, the greenhouse was fairly empty and in need of some new tables and an irrigation system.

In June, engineers from Convergint Technologies visited to put their skills and expertise to use. The engineers, numbering nearly 100, constructed enough tables to fi ll the greenhouse and helped to install an irrigation system. They also weeded the entire farm, painted tables, built

Farm Shares

a cold frame, and cleaned up the picnic area and front entrance.

Throughout the season, we received many more groups of volunteers, including our friends from R.E.I., Intel, UPS, PLU, UNFI, and others who helped out with seeding, planting, weeding and harvesting.

Our helpers from the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Purdy were with us from the start of the season to the fi nish and were paramount to our success. These nine highly productive, thoughtful and well-meaning individuals proved to be the best farm crew yet. As a result of the amazing contributions from the crew and volunteers, we were able to have a successful growing year and produced nearly 75

tons of fresh organic fruits and vegetables.

We are looking forward to another bountiful growing season in 2013. We recently added a new assistant, Anika Moran. Anika has a thorough background in organic farming and possesses many relatable skills that will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the upcoming season.

A monthly donation of $25 provides 300 lbs of fresh produce to food bank clients.

Mother Earth Farm grows 150,000 lbs of fresh produce, delivered to food banks the same day harvested.

Help share Mother Earth Farm’s bounty by purchasing full or half-shares of the farm on behalf of hungry families and individuals in Pierce County.

A monthly donation of $50 ($600) provides 600 lbs of fresh, organically grown produce to food bank clients.

warehouse, load them into the box truck, and make deliveries to 15 programs that don’t have their own trucks and drivers

Interesting Fact: Jim’s father was also a delivery truck driver.

What Jim likes about his job: “I like helping my community. I like the good people who work at the food banks. I’ve even gone fi shing with some of them.”

What else you should know that might interest you about Jim: Two years before Jim worked at EFN, he lost his job and his home and had a hard time getting back on his feet. Jim and his family moved around to various shelters and churches. He received assistance from job training programs and accepted state benefi ts, and his family relied on food banks to get by. As soon as things started to turn around for him, he stopped accepting help and started giving back, delivering food to many of the same places that helped him when he needed it most. Jim is a proud husband, father, grandfather, and Seahawks fan.

In 2012, Susie Ripley had her hands in almost every aspect of Emergency Food Network’s volunteer activities.

She volunteered in June to collect food and money at the Tacoma Rainiers’ Nonprofi t Night and spent time getting her hands dirty at Mother Earth Farm. In September, she worked at our information booth at the Puyallup Fair, and was an all-important score keeper at our fi rst annual

Volunteer Profile

Breaking Hunger Trap Shooting Tournament. In October, she spent an evening with us at our Abundance Auction helping with a variety of tasks, and in November she helped arrange the beautiful bowls at our Empty Bowls fundraiser. She closed out the year by volunteering to stuff envelopes for our biggest mailing of the year.

Did we mention that half the time she was on crutches with a broken ankle? Susie is a positive and cheerful presence at EFN events and we appreciate her so much for all the help she gives. It’s volunteers like her that truly make a difference. Thank you Susie!

Saturday, May 11 marked the date of this year’s National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. This event raised over 300,000 pounds of food to help feed the hungry children, seniors and adults that visit food banks, shelters and meal sites 115,000 times each month. All of the food donated by the community is picked up by letter carriers and is collected, weighed, sorted, and distributed by EFN to local emergency food programs throughout Pierce County.

Looking for a meaningful way to take action and a great opportunity to get involved? Food drives and fund drives raise awareness of hunger in our community, collect food for people in need, and play an essential role in the fi ght against hunger. Whether it’s your child’s school, your place of worship, your business, your local Scout Troop, or any other caring group, every item and dollar you donate to a food or fund drive makes a difference to a hungry person.

Let EFN help coordinate your efforts with posters, bins, and delivery and pick-up of items. Visit our website at www.efoodnet.org to download our Food and Fund Drive Coordinators’ Kit.

Thank you!

How you can help...Organize a food and donation drive at your workplace, school, place of worship, or civic goup. Donation drives are more effective than food drives because EFN can turn $1 into $12 worth of food!

Donate money directly to EFN by mail or through our secure PayPal site that you can fi nd at www.efoodnet.org.

Designate Emergency Food Network through your workplace payroll deduction plan.

Volunteer at one of EFN’s projects, such as Mother Earth Farm or our Repack Project. Contact (253) 584-1040 or [email protected] for more information.

Plant an Extra Row (or more) of fruits and vegetables in your personal garden and donate your harvest to a local food bank.

Register your fruit tree online for gleaning by volunteers. www.piercecountygleaningproject.org

Make a planned gift through your will. Contact [email protected].
