Eco-efficiency services performance contracting in China (EESCo)…


In cooperation with local partners, SustainAsia is qualifying a novel approach for Hong Kong based EESCo (Environmental and Energy Services Companies) to performance contracting (and Asia), under the P2E2 (Pollution Prevention and Energy efficiency) scheme, targeting commercial, institutional and industrial end-users in mainland China


Emergence of the bio-fuels industry in South East Asia and China…


SustainAsia is following a number of bio-fuel (bio-diesel and ethanol) projects in South East Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam) and China.

Given the right set of conditions, such as high oil prices and CER (“Carbon credits” ) under Kyoto CDM, these projects and their accompanying technologies (biotech and refineries) are bound to flourish in Asia*

*Acc. to a recent report from McKinsey & Co as of 2005, much of the projected growth in adoption of industrial biotechnology - counting products made from biobased feedstocks or through fermentation or enzymatic conversion - (a $77 billion market in value within the chemical sector) is attributable to biofuels – ethanol and biodiesel.


Impact of the EU REACH Directive


SustainAsia is tracking the coming into force of the REACH EU Directive * which upon implementation will affect the global trade in chemicals.

REACH aims to create a restricting bias against hazardous chemicals. It will affect large and small Asian industries producing, trading or using chemicals going into products for the EU. This will open opportunity for the assessment, promotion and production of innovative and safer compounds and products.

* The REACH system will be composed primarily of three elements: Registration that requires substance manufacturers and importers to gather information on the substances they manufacture or import and use it for responsible and well-informed risk management (30,000 substances concerned). Evaluation of registered substances exceeding a production volume of 100 tons (an estimated 5,000 substances). Authorization of substances with certain hazardous properties that give rise to very high concern (around 1,400 substances).
