Sustainable reasons to select Outokumpu products
Stainless steel is a key building block for a sustainable future. Material properties such as durability, strength, hygiene, corrosion resistance and 100% recyclability make it not just a material of choice, but also an enabler of sustainable solutions.
Sustainable stainless means lower
life cycle costs and lower emissions.

Outokumpu is a leader in sustainability
and provides detailed environmental
information about its main products.
Using our stainless steels helps our
customers to better track their own
environmental impacts and to improve
their own environmental performance.
1) This means that in practice Outokumpu uses over 850 kg of recycledmetals to produce 1 ton of stainless steel. 2) ISSF publication of average global recycling input rates by stainless steel producers 2014.3) Lifecycle data from industry and commonly used external data bases and carbon footprinting tools for stainless steel products. (Gabi, ISSF, Ecoinvent 3).
Recycling 1. Stainless steel is fully recyclable and doesn’t lose its properties in the recycling process.
2. Steel is the most recycled material in the world.
3. Outokumpu produces stainless steel from recycled steel. The recycled content of our steel is Outokumpu steel is above 85%1 on average, against the industry average of 50%2.
1. We work actively for a smaller carbon footprint and detailed carbon footprint data is available for our main products.
2. The life cycle inventory of austenitic stainless steels, our main product, shows that their carbon footprint is almost 40% smaller than it was in the 1990s.
3. Outokumpu’s main products, cold rolled standard stainless steels, carbon footprint is at least 15% lower than average stainless steel values3.
4. We have reduced direct per ton CO2 emissions by 25% over the last decade. The target is to achieve a further 20% reduction in the carbon profile by 2020.
By using Outokumpu´s stainless steel
you decrease your and your customers
Carbon footprint.
