SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT
Who we are
• A contract manufacturer of toiletries products.
• Based in Waterlooville• Employing approx 250 staff• Annual turnover of £20million• Moving from simple contract
manufacture to full service provision – design, develop, manufacture, pack.
Sustainability?
• Environmental– Is the material from a sustainable source
• Economic– Is the company supplying it financially sound and is
the price compatible with our required margins.
• Social– Are the staff in our supply chain treated fairly
and in all cases – are we buying local where feasible?
Strategic Buyer• We have restructured our
offices to have “cells” of staff dedicated to a group of customers.
• To oversee all the buying rolls we now have a Strategic Buyer – Improved supplier approval– Supplier agreements– Vendor rating – Working closely with our
supply chain, learning their strengths = BUYING SMART
There is a difference
between cost and price!

Early days…
• We are just starting on this journey– Supplier questionnaires (environmental, quality and
ethics)– Upgraded Sedex membership– Supplier days– Local business partners
Growing confidence
• We are now developing a “Made in UK” range using UK sourced ingredients– DEFRA’s non food use of
crops project• Wheat germ oil• Seed oils etc
Environmental Sustainability• Seaweed extracts –
withdrawn by the supplier as unsustainable
• Palm oil – “green palm” certified sustainable sources
• Community trade –Peppermint oil from Norfolk in BSi products.
• PCR plastic and glass in BSi packaging.
Social Sustainability – Buying “Local”• UK made / refurbished compactor• Office Cleaning provision• Factory cooling / heating• Carriers and layer cards• Recycling contractor
Social Sustainability – staff welfare
• We have a duty of care for the staff employed within our supply chain
• Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) can be used to manage information– Work with suppliers to improve conditions, do not
just walk away.• Audit key suppliers and encourage them to
audit their supply chain
Preferred suppliers – Economic Sustainability• Share our views on sustainability.• Prepared to audit their supply chains to cascade
this thinking out.• In return they will get additional business from us.• We secure better terms / prices for us. • Added bonus of reducing vehicles coming to site.• Linked to current trends on packaging /
components.• By knowing our suppliers capabilities and strengths
we can “buy smart”.
