Pulkovo Airport, Saint Petersburg, Russia Grimshawispartofaninternationalteam,includingPascall+Watson,thatisdesigninganewterminaland‘airportcity’forPulkovoAirport.Thestrikingnewterminalroofandenvelopeweredesignedtoaccommodatetheextremesofclimateexperiencedbythecity.Theroofiscreatedfromaseriesof18metrebayswhicheffectivelyactaslargehoppers,shallowenoughnottoencouragegatheringsnowbutdeepenoughtoprovideeffectivedrainage.

Thedrainsarelocateddirectlyabovetheroof’ssupportivecolumnstoensurethatthegreatestsnowloadisconcentratedontheareaofmaximumstructuralsupport.Therooflightsarepositionedabovethedatumlinetogivethemthegreatestprotectionfromblanketingsnowandtoenablethemtomakeoptimaluseofthelowanglenaturallight.OtherUKcompaniesworkingonthisprojectincludeArup,BuroHappold,MottMcDonaldandHalcrow.

2emissions

byupto32percentandsaving6,000tonnesofCO

2perannum.Thenew

terminalhasavarietyofenergy-efficientinitiativesincludingreducednumbersoffansystemsthroughtheuseofnaturalairexhaust,theuseofnaturaldaylight,abuildingenvelopethatminimisesairinfiltrationandheatloss,thereuseofwarmairandeffectiveautomaticbuildingcontrolsystems.

Queen Alia International Airport, Amman, JordanThedesignbyFoster+PartnersatQueenAliaInternationalAirportinAmmanoffersanapproachtowardsecologicallysensitivearchitectureforthetwenty-firstcenturyairport.Theprojectincorporatesapassiveenvironmentalstrategywithmaximumusebeingmadeofnaturallightthroughsplitbeamsatthecolumnjunctionsintheroofthatallowdaylighttoflooddeepintothebuilding.Theconcreteroofstructureactsasathermalstoretoheatandcoolthebuilding,whilstablackmetalroofcoversthedomesandactsasaheatshieldthatincorporatesanaturallyventilatedcavitytoreleaseheatbuildup.Thebuildingdrawsonthevernaculartraditionofoutdoorareasandopen-airgardens–thesecourtyardscontainwaterpoolsthatreflectnaturallightintothebuildingandprovidepassiveair-coolingtopre-conditionairpriortomechanicalventilation.OtherUKcompaniesinvolvedintheprojectincludedDavisLangdon,WSPandBuroHappold.

New Bugesera International Airport, Kigali, RwandaSustainabilitywasakeyconsiderationforTPSinthedesignofNewBugeseraInternationalAirportinRwanda.LocatedonagreenfieldsitetothesoutheastofthecapitalcityKigali,thenewairportwasdesignedtohandlethemostmodernandquietestfuel-efficientaircraft.Sustainablesolutionsincludedtheuseofpre-conditionedaironallaircraftstands,forcednaturalventilationinallbuildings,togetherwiththeuseofanundergroundcoolairsystemwithinthepassengerterminal.Rainwaterharvestingandanon-siterecyclingandwasteprocessingfacilityhaveaddedtotheproject’sstrongsustainabilitybenefits.

Abu Dhabi International Airport, UAEAruphasbeeninvolvedinthedevelopmentstrategyoffourterminalsatAbuDhabiInternationalAirportwiththeoverarchingobjectiveofhandlinganincreaseinpassengertrafficfromsevenmillionpassengersperyeartofortymillion.Thelargestoftheseterminals(locatedinthemid-field)isbeingdesignedonsustainableprinciples.

Stratifiedairconditioningsystemsservealllargevolumespaceswhilstlowenergylighting,facadeshadingandhighefficiencyperimeterglazingallcontributetooptimalenergyefficiency.Waterconservationisacriticalissue,withcondensatefromairconditioningequipmentbeingre-circulatedtogreywatersystems.

New Quito International Airport, EcuadorMottMacDonaldwerekeyadvisersforthedevelopmentofanewairportatQuito.ThedevelopmentwasawardedaUnitedNationsGlobalSustainabilityAwardin2009onthebasisofmultiplecriteriaincludingminimisingtheimpactontheenvironment;emissionsandnoisereduction;residualwatertreatment;floraandfaunaprotection;andapositiveeconomicimpactinthelocalcommunity.AlexanderMejiafromtheUnitedNationssaid“thenewQuitoairportwasselectedasbestpracticeonhowtodesignandbuildagreenmega-project,notonlyintheAmericasbutintheworld,asweareawarethatnootherairportofthismagnitudeisbeingbuiltwithsuchahighenvironmentalfocus.”

Yinchuan Airport, ChinaAtkinsdevelopedanewairportcomplexinYinchuan,Ningxiainaprojectthatinvolvedmasterplanningandtheconstructionofanew30,000squaremetreterminalbuilding.Theproject,whichhadtoovercometheextremetemperaturesandharshclimateofthearidregion,utilisedarchingsteelcolumnsandanefficientthree-dimensionalstructuralsystemtosatisfysevereseismicbuildingcodes.The53metreclearspansteeltrussesprojectingabovetheroofenablednaturallighttofloodin,whilstdiscreetskylightsandinsulatedtranslucentcladdingpanelswereusedtocreateabrightandairyinteriorwhilefilteringtheharshdesertsunlightintotheterminalbuilding.

The Spaceport Authority Building, New MexicoFoster+Partnersispartofateamthatwonaninternationalcompetitiontobuildthefirstprivatespaceportintheworld–TheNewMexicoSpaceportAuthorityBuilding.Makingaminimalimpactontheenvironment,theschemewillbethefirstfacilityofitskindandamodelforthefuture.

TheSpaceportlieslowwithinthedesert-likelandscapeofthesite,exploitingthethermalmasswhichbuffersthebuildingfromtheextremesoftheNewMexicoclimateaswellascatchingthewesterlywindsforventilation.Naturallightentersviaskylights,withaglazedfacadereservedfortheterminalbuilding.Usinglocalmaterialsandregionalconstructiontechniques,thebuildingisbothsustainableandsensitivetoitssurroundings.

Theschemewillhaveminimalembodiedcarbonandfewadditionalenergyrequirements,andhasbeendesignedtoachievetheprestigious‘LeadershipinEnergyandEnvironmentalDesign’platinumaccreditation.
