Environment oriented services

5 Challenges for Telecom Italia business operations• Environmental monitoring systems (for instance: air quality forecasting

systems available trough “ remotised” common servers– reduction of investments by local administrations– Updating on-line interoperable models according to new scientific

developments and to specific local conditions

• New systems for dissemination – Wireless Access Protocols (WAP) systems are the most promising– Rapidly moving toward UMTS services

• Integration of environmental information with other public services (EQUAL project is already focused t on this subject)

• Environmental networks: EIONET by Finsiel, (Telecom Italia group)

• Satellite services: leading position of Telespazio “ “

Future initiatives toward IST Program

• Reflecting medium terms business operations, Telecom Italia will invest in projects according to the 5 mentioned objectives

– 1) Environmental monitoring systems (for instance: air quality forecasting systems available trough “ remotised” common servers

– 2) New systems for dissemination to the general public (WAP, UMTS) – 3) Integration of environmental information with other public services – 4) applications for European Environmental networks (based on EIONET) – 5) Innovative Satellite services from Telespazio

• Good opportunities from IST programs in “Services for citizens” even if under represented in terms of resources (11 to1 as success ratio)

• Critical aspect for large industries in IST proposals:– the “innovation factor” is treated only as technological innovation– casual distribution of expertise during evaluation process– actual evaluation procedures are favouring simple projects, because of lack of time

available by the evaluators for complex industrial projects
