MissionandPlanning
ThecurrentmissionoftheSustainabilityAdvisoryCommittee(SAC)includesthefollowingpoints:Tothisend,theCollege,withthedirectsupportoftheSustainabilityAdvisoryCommittee,willworkto:
• Facilitatetheestablishmentofacademiccoursesandothercurricularandco-curricularprogramsrelatedtoenvironmentalsustainability.
• Offeradviceandhaveaseatatthetableregardingtheplanningandimplementationofenvironmentallysustainablepracticesinourfacilities,operations,andcapitalprojects,andinthecampusmasterplanningprocess.
• Worktoraisetheenvironmentalandsustainabilityawarenessofallmembersofthecampuscommunitythroughcurriculum,programs,specialeventsandinitiatives,andthroughthecollection,analysis,anddisseminationofinformationontheCollege’senergyandresourceuseandoverallcarbonfootprint.
• Fosterenvironmentalstewardshipandencourageresponsibleconsumption.

SUMMARYOFACTIVITIESANDRECOMMENDEDACTIONITEMS
TheyearbeganwiththeacceptanceoftheEnvironmentalSciencemajorintothecurriculuminOctoberof2016.AnEnvironmentalStudiesminorwasalsosubmittedforconsideration.
2016-17Activities:EarthDays2017
BeckyUrbanledtheEarthDaysPlanningCommittee,workingwiththeSAC,theenvironmentalclub,andothervolunteers.EarthDaysactivitiestookplacethroughoutthemonthofApril,withvariouseventstakingplaceoncampusandthroughoutthecommunity.Somethisyear’sactivitiesincluded:
• PresentationsonsustainabilityinEnglishandSpanishaswellasapresentationonthenutritionalbenefitsofaddinginsectstoyourdiet
• Sustainablelunchhourfeaturinglocallyproducedandsustainableproducts.• Aphotographydisplaytobringawarenesstocarelessactsoflittering• Atrashcollageandenvironmentalcollageartinstallations• SustainabilityOratoricalContest

Studentswereencouragedtowritespeechesansweringthequestion:“Explainaglobalenvironmentalissue,anddiscusshowourlocalbehaviorsandactionscontributetoit.Whatarethebestwaystoaddressthisissue,inyourview?”FinalistswerechosentopresenttheirspeechesonApril5thforthechancetowinaniPadMini(1stplace),a$100CollegeStoregiftcard(2ndplace),ora$50CollegeStoregiftcard(3rdplace).GabrielleCressman’20wasthe2017first-placewinner.

WoodThrushResearchPreserveTheBoardofTrusteesapprovedarequesttodesignatetwentyacresoftheRohlandWoodsastheWoodThrushResearchPreserve.Thenewlocationwillserveasanacademicresourceforfacultiesandstudents.Preservingtheareawillopenupevenmoreopportunitiesforfutureclasses,individualresearch,andenvironmentalinitiatives.
SolarFeasibilityStudy
ThankstomoneyfromPresident’sinnovationgrantandassistancefromtheITDepartment,theSACwasabletoinitiateasolarfeasibilitystudy.Fivesolarvendorswerecontactedandfourofthemexpressedinterestinprovidingproposals.Thevendorswillberesearchedandcarefullyconsideredbeforeselectingwhomwewillpartnerwith.ThisstudywillprovidetheSACwithvaluableinformationtofurthersustainabilityinitiativesinvolvingsolarenergy.

APPENDIXA:2015–2016CARBONINVENTORY
Duringthe2016-2017schoolyear,acarboninventorywascompletedforthe2015-2016fiscalyearusingtheweb-basedCampusCarbonCalculator(CarbonManagementandAnalysisPlatform(CarbonMAP)poweredbySightlines.)Theapplicationbreaksdownemissionsintothreecategories:Scope1,Scope2,andScope3.Scope1emissionsaredirectemissionsthatcomefromsourcesthatareownedand/orcontrolledbyLebanonValleyCollege.Scope1emissionsforLVCresultfromfossilfuelandfertilizerusage.Thecampususesnaturalgasanddistillateoilforheatingbuildingswithmostbuildingsusingnaturalgas.DieselfuelandunleadedgasolineusedforrunningthecollegefleetalsofallintotheScope1category.RefrigerantsandotherchemicalswouldbeanothersourceofScope1emissions,butthecollegeensuresthatthesechemicalsareproperlycaredforandnotreleasedasemissions.Scope2emissionsareindirectemissionsfromsourcesthatarenotownedoroperatedbyLebanonValleyCollege.However,thesesourcesaredirectlylinkedtotheenergyusedbythecampus.WhiletheCollegeisnotdirectlyresponsiblefortheseemissions,theCollegerequiresthisenergytooperateandisresponsibleforthedemand.ForLebanonValleyCollege,purchasedelectricityistheonlysourceofscope2emissions.Scope3emissionsareallotheremissions.Theseemissionsaretypicallyconsideredas“optional”andarehardertoclassify.EithertheseemissionsaretheresultofdirectfinancingorencouragementoftheCollege,butarenotfromsourcesownedoroperatedbyLVC.Someexamplesofthiswouldbestudyabroadtravelandfaculty,staffandstudentcommuting.Theresponsibilityoftheseemissionsisunclearbutmustbecarefullymonitoredinordertoensuretheemissionsarenotcountedtwice.Duringthisreportingyear,wehavedecidedtoaccountforsportstravelviabusandvan.ThishasresultedinaslightincreaseinScope3emissionsaswellasamoreaccuratecarbonfootprint.
CarbonInventoryResultsSummary:Beforeanymitigationstrategies,totalemissionsfromallthreescopeswere4,742MTeCO2,orMetricTonsofCarbonDioxideEquivalents.Figure1,below,showsthebreakdownoftotalemissionsbyscope.Figure2providesamoredetailedbreakdownofemissionsbysources.DuetotheCollegepurchasing100%wind-generatedelectricity,Scope2emissionshavebeencompletelyeliminated.

Conclusion:Totalemissionsdecreasedby1,064.61MTeCO2fromthepreviousfiscalyear,an18.33%decrease,andspreadaroundallcategoriesofemissions.Thelargestcontributingchangeswereincommuting.Wemadechangestoourcalculationsforthesetoincreaseaccuracyoverthelasttwoyears,whichmayexplainthedecrease.Otherthancommuting,allcategoriesareneartheirpreviouslevels,showingaccuracyinreportingmethods.Overall,thereisasignificantdifferenceinoverallcarbonemissionscomparedtothe2014-2015fiscalyear.Thisdifferenceisanoticeabledecrease,whichisfavorable.

TheSACwillpresenttheirannualreporttothecampusandofferanopeninvitationforotherstojointhecommittee.ThereportoutlinestheaccomplishmentsoftheSAC,reviewsgoalsforthenextyearalongwithpresentationsbyourpartners,MetzandFacilityServices.Itwassuggestedtofollowtheformatfromlastyear.Thisincludedanopeningquiz,approximately30minutesforpresentationand15minutesforquestions.TheendofOctober/commonhourwassuggestedaswellasthelocationofroom203ofNeidig-Garber.BothMikeZeiglerandMikeSchroederwillcollaboratetoorganizethemeeting.

StudentGovernment–LarisonBryceLarison,notedthatstudentslivinginMaryGreenarestillwithoutrecyclingbins.AccordingtoanemailfromJayLohman,VickiTrostlefromFacilitiesisawareofthesituation.Alargenumberofbinswerenotreturnedlastyear.BinsweredistributedtoMGonceconstructionwascomplete.However,therewerenotenoughbinstofurnishthe2ndand3rdfloors.Vickihasattemptedtoordermorebinsbuttheywereonbackorder.Also,thepriceofthebinshasincreased.MikeZeiglernotedthathewouldcontactVickitocheckonthestatusofthebins.Healsonotedthatifcostwasafactor,maybewecouldusesomeoftheInnovationGrantmoniestoassistwithpayment.BrycenotedthatRebeccaWhalenwasconcernedaboutthesituation.MikeZeiglermentionedthatwemaywanttocontactRebeccatoinsureherthatthesituationisbeinginvestigatedandwilleventuallyberesolved.BrycealsoreportedthatstudentswereinquiringifgarbagereceptaclescouldbeplacedoutsidebetweenHammondandKeisteraswellasintheparkinglotofMaryGreen.MikeZeigleraskedBrycetoputtherequestinanemailwithspecificlocationsandphotographs,ifavailable.

PresidentThayneisaskingforthestatusoftheSecondNatureClimateCommittee.MikeZeiglerandMikeSchroederwillmeetwithSteveO’Daytomapouthowheseesthecommitteeprogressingforward,whatresourcesareneeded(capital,etc.),andtheestablishmentofasubcommittee.Weneedtobecarbonneutralwithinaspecifiedtimeandtheplanneedstobecompletewithin1–2years.

volumeofpapertowels.Thereasonsbehindthisareunclearbutcouldbeattributedtomoreeventsbeingheldandtheareainquestionisahighvolumearea.Vickywouldliketogethanddryerstoreplacethepapertoweldispensers.Handdryersare$1200each.Byreplacingthedispensers,savingswouldincludepapertowelcostsandtrashexpenses.Vickyfeltthatthecostofeachdryercouldberecoupedwithin6months.
Typically,handdryerexpensesarebuiltintoarenovationbudgetforcapitalprojectsbutthiswouldnotbeconsideredarenovation.Also,Vickyisgivenarefusebudgetandshewouldusuallytakemoniesoutofthisbudgettocoverthesecosts.Unfortunately,shehasexperiencedadecreaseinherbudgetthisyear.SheisaskingiftheSACwouldconsideracontributiontopurchasinghanddryers.MikeZeiglersaidthattheSACcouldhelpwiththis.

RebeccaUrbanaskediftherewasabetteruseofourfundsforsomethingelseoncampus.VictoriaTrostleofFacilitiesnotedthatshewasaskedtoinquireaboutfundstopayforahanddryerbeingreplacedinthelowerlevelofHumanitiesduetotherenovationofthemen’srestroom.Also,theywillberemovingthewatercoolerinthebasementofHumanitiesduringtherenovationandwouldliketoreplaceitwithabottle-filler.Thecommitteequestionedtheneedforabottle-fillerinthebasementwhentherewasalreadyoneonthefirstfloorandotherbuildingsoncampushavenobottle-fillersinstalledatall,suchasNeidig-Garber.Victorianotedthatthecostofahanddryeris$900andabottle-filleris$1200.Shealsoaddedthatthesavingsfrompaperpurchasesandtrashwouldbehuge.Theirgoalistohavehanddryersinstalledinallfacilities.MikeZeigleraskedifthesavingswouldoffsetthecostofahanddryer.Thisdiscussionwastableduntilwecangetmoreinformationregardingthecostsavingsfrompaper.Also,wewanttoknowifwatercoolerscanbemovedaroundtoaccommodatethebasementinHumanitieswiththeoptionofputtingabottle-fillerinNeidig-Garber.
