Hamilton School Districts proposed 3.83percent budget increase for 2014-2015 wasapproved during an Oct. 20 School board meet-ing.
The $55,026,252 budget includes a milrate of 9.76 per $1,000 equalized valuation, which is 44 cents lower than last year. The milrate is also 52 cents lower than what boardmembers originally estimated during the boardmeeting in summer.
Board members said that state aid hasincreased by 1.69 percent, contributing to thereduced mil rate. The budgets net tax levy hasincreased to $29.46 million which is paid bylocal taxpayers.
Student enrollment at Hamilton SchoolDistrict for 2014-2015 school year is at an all-time high, and this par tly contributes to the over-all budget increase, according to John Roubik, director of educational services and humanresources.
There are no open enrollment seats for nextyear because we have 32 more studentsenrolled in the district for this school year, saidRoubik. Many other districts have more openenrollment seats because their overall districtenrollment is decreasing, but Hamiltons isincreasing.
Roubik also said that the number of seatsavailable for students to enroll through Chapter220 remains at 110, a number theyve main-tained for years. Chapter 220 is a fully state-

Marquette University alumna and recentlyearned her doctorate through CardinalStritch University was nominated by St.Mary Parish School Principal, LindaJoyner. The nom ina tion det ail edFerderbars ability to accommodate toeach of her students learning style andbring educational concepts to life.
It is common place, for students to dis-
sect, build, grow, write, sing, solve ficti-tious crimes, create visual representations, graphic organizers, and even dress up likeelements to demonstrate their knowledge, said Joyner. She empowers her studentswith the knowledge, skills and inspirationthey need to take action and make a posi-tive difference in the community.
Ferderbars love of science and hands-on teaching style engages and inspiresstudents in a way that helps them gain agreater sensitivity for the environment. Many of her students noted environmen-tally friendly changes they have imple-mented at home due to concepts taught byFerderbar in class such as cleaning debrisfrom storm sewers, forgoing soapy waterwhen washing cars, and sweeping fertiliz-
er off t heir driveways. One sixth grade stu-dent was inspired by Ferderbar to rescueseveral tadpoles from a polluted sewer cul-vert and release the developed frogs intoa clean river.
She has organized a school-wide recy-cling program, a student managed com-posting program, an after school scienceand garden club and developed a pro-gram in collaboration with Riveredge
Nature Center which will be offered toother schools as a service learning experi-ence. The program, entitled ProtectingWisconsin Ecosystems. teaches studentsabout invasive plants and the role theyplay in destabilizing native ecosystems.Students learned to identify, locate andproperly remove the plants in prairie andforest areas. As part of the project, stu-dents shared their knowledge with family
members and neighbors in an effort todecrease the impact of invasive species intheir own communities.

By Sam EricksonVeterans Day has taken on a new meaning
for many Americans since September 11 andthe beginning of the conflicts in Iraq andAfghanistan. Only a few years ago, manyAmericans did not know an individual who hadbeen in active combat duty in the last 20 years. After the Vietnam War, the military becamemuch less valued and much less popular in the
mainstream culture, but, today, all veterans arehonored for their service on Veterans Day.The first Armistice Day celebration took
place in 1919 and marked the first anniversaryof the Armistice. Thirty states made it a legal hol-iday and President Woodrow Wilson led the fes-tivities. Armistice Day was made a federal holi-day in 1938, making it one of the most recentholidays in America. The name was officiallychanged to Veterans Day with legislation pro-posed in 1953.
Unlike religious and secular holidays likeChristmas and Thanksgiving, there are very fewofficial celebrations of Veterans Day in America, although this too is rapidly changing as moreveterans return from Iraq and Afghanistan. If youare interested in establishing your own tradi-tions, there are many things you can do. Mostcities will have some memorial for soldiers lost in
war, and laying flowers or remembering soldiersthat you have known is a good option. Whilethere are active service men and women in thefield, you might consider sending a care pack-age or just a thank-you card to a soldier. Youcan even discuss the history of the holiday and
American military involvement with yodren.
Most holidays in the United Statebeen moved to Mondays to create weekend. The same was done for VDay, but veterans groups protested andmoved back to the traditional dNovember 11. Most groups thought iraise the profile of the holiday, but it has
had the opposite effect. While more peoobserving the holiday in recent years, mnesses do not close for the day. Only ment offices and banks are closed. Offiemonies center on the Tomb of the UnknArlington National Cemetery in WasD.C. A color guard from all branches ofitary patrols the site through the night, dential wreath is laid and Taps is playthe grave.

As part of their Mobilizing Communitiesbusiness model, United Way of WashingtonCounty is initiating a new community invest-ment prioritization process. For 2016,United Way will provide sustained annualfunding for programs that impact communi-ty health, with a focus on access to healthcare, healthy beginnings, and healthychoices. Special consideration will be givento coalitions, and programs that impact
alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) ormental health.Over the last two years, United Way of
Washington County has expanded beyondsimple fund allocation. Their MobilizingCommunities business model is a strategyfor creating impactful, lasting change by
identifying and addressing the underlyingcauses of critical community needs. Eachyear, United Way will accept new applica-tions for funding under one of their threeimpact pillarsEducation, Income, orHealth.
Health was selected as the first pillar forfunding due to strong responses from com-munity conversations and the overwhelmingevidence of need.
Health is the one thing that is importantto everyoneits the foundation for successin life, said Kristin Brandner, ExecutiveDirector of United Way of WashingtonCounty. We want to leverage strategicpartnerships and resources so that individu-als are empowered to take control of their
health and live fuller, more vibrant lives.Applications for health impact funding

BYTHOMAS J. MCKILLENMANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls boys soccerteam staged an improbable comeback onthe second night of the boys state soccertournament last weekend only to fall to aGreater Metro Conference rival in the final
game of the 2014 season the next evening. This group comes in loose, there is a
quiet confidence about them,Menomonee Falls Coach Scott Stein saidafter a WIAA Division I semifinal gameagainst Beloit Memorial that was tied 5-5after overtime and decided on a shootout. We have nine seniors starters that nobodythought much of us at the start of the year. These guys, they believe. Theyre light atpractice, they come to play.
Oct. 31: Against the oddsMenomonee Falls scored twice in the
final 10 minutes of regulation againstBeloit Memorial in a state Division I semifi-nal Oct. 31 to force a 4-4 tie, setting thestage for a shootout that the Indians won to
advance to the state title game the nextevening. The teams were tied 5-5 at the end of
the two overtime period. Menomonee Fallswon the shootout as Will Genthe stoppedthe final penalty kick from Beloit Memorial.
Obviously, its surreal, I did not have agood game up until that point, Genthesaid of the shootout. I missed a few of thegoals I should have had. God gave me theopportunity to get to (penalty kicks), tomake those saves, to get to overtime everything is just incredible.
Genthe noted that video of BeloitMemorial penalty kicks were on aFacebook page. Genthe said he looked atthe video and saw the first three penaltykicks Memorial took against KettleMoraine a week earlier, which gave him
an idea of which direction the shots wouldbe going.
My last save was a total guess, though, Genthe said.
Menomonee Falls started the game ata disadvantage, as it was playing into astrong wind gusting from the north. JoseBarron got the Purple Nights on the boardwith a goal at at the 20:22 mark. Barronthen assisted Ricardo Ramos on a goal at
the 32:40 mark.Ramos gave Memorial a 3-0 lead at
the 67:44 mark of the second half.Menomonee Falls, with the wind now to itsadvantage, got on the board on a goalfrom Brandon Dantone at the 69:36 mark, which came off a free kick by Kay Olapo.Olapo then closed the gap further for theFalls with a goal off a pass from AlexEastman at t he 74:12 mark.
Once we went 3-1, I knew we werestill in this game, Dantone said afterward.
But Beloit Memorial's offense brokecontainment as Andres Dellatorre scored atthe 80:24 mark, giving the Purple Knightsa 4-2 lead with just over 10 minutes left inregulation.
But Dantone answered for Menomonee
Falls, scoring at the 84:14 mark on anassist by Eastman and driving home anunassisted goal at the 86:20 mark for theequalizer to make the score 4-4 at the endof regulation.
State semifinals, I had to create some-thing out of nothing and put it in the backof the net, Dantone said afterward.
Dantone gave Menomonee Falls a 5-4lead at the 91:34 mark of the first overtimebut Alberto Martinez answered for BeloitMemorial with a long range goal thatdipped under the crossbar at the 92:10mark. The teams battled to a stalemate atthe end of both overtime periods, as bothgoalkeepers made saves in the secondovertime.
In the shootout period, MenomoneeFalls jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Genthestopped the first two shot attempts. But thePurple Nights converted their next two
attempts while Menomonee Falls missedtheirs to make the score 3-2 in favor ofMenomonee Falls heading into the finalattempt. Genthe stopped the final attemptto send Menomonee Falls to the title matchagainst Marquette.
I actually told them at half I thought itwas going to be a 5-4 game, Stein said. Iknew we had firepower in us, we were
composed and obviously wind was a hugefactor.Nov. 1: Topped by the
