Douma, Syria

For res idents of besieged Douma, the daily

struggle to survive involves not just avoiding the violence that has ravaged the Syrian town, but labouring to obtain scarce basic commodities.

Facing a shortage of  fuel  to run generators and machinery due to the siege, former construction worker Abu Kassem set up a makeshift refinery to extract  fuel  from plastic waste through a process of burning them and condensing the released gas.

It is a gruelling process.“There is no pleasure in our

work. It is very dangerous and requires a lot of caution. When I see that the equipment’s situation is stable, I can take a little rest and smoke the hookah,” said Abu Fahad, 28, one of Abu Kassem’s sons.

The workshop – which employs Kassem’s three sons and other relatives – has operated for some three and a half years, since government forces began their siege of rebel-held eastern Ghouta, a district on the outskirts of the Syrian capital where Douma is located.

As the siege intensified,

severe  fuel  shortages  began to hamper agriculture, transport and other activities, so Abu Kassem began searching for a way around the problem.

Using methods learned from instructional videos posted on the internet, the family takes plastic bottles, rubble from damaged buildings, plastic from cooking utensils, water and even sewage pipes to produce liquid and gas fuels.

The liquid is refined into gasoline, diesel and benzene  fuels and the gasses obtained are sold for domestic and commercial use in place of natural gas.

The  fuels are then sold to customers, including bakeries, farmers who need fuel to power water pumps and consumers for use in cars and motorcycles.

For those who toil in the workshop, the environment leaves much to be desired. Smoke billows from fires and generators, and the fumes from burning plastic hang ever-present in the air.

“Working here is very tiring, but we feel that we are providing a

g r e a t

service to people. I have been working here for a short time and have begun to adapt to the atmosphere here,” said Abu Ahmed, 28, another of the workers.

The workshop operates 15 hours a day, six days a week, and workers’ only protection against the effects of inhaling the polluted air caused by burning plastic is advice from some to drink two cups of milk a day to try to offset the effects. The efficacy of the treatment is uncertain.

A day’s work will see 800 kg to 1,000 kg of plastic used in the workshop, where 100 kg of plastic makes approximately 85 litres of fuel.

A litre of benzene  fuel  sells for 2,200 Syrian pound ($4.70), and a litre of diesel for 2,000 Syrian pounds.

“When the siege began on eastern Ghouta at the end of 2013 fuel prices rose madly and we were no longer able to water crops as in the past,” Abu Firas, 33, an agricultural worker in the district told Reuters. “When we started producing local fuel, and that water engines could be powered by this fuel local fuel, life returned to agricultural

Workshop to get rid of municipal irregularitiesHarpreet Kaur/[email protected]

Manama

The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs

concluded a two-day workshop on eradicating irregularities and violations in municipalities in the Kingdom.

The forum held on the 10th and 11th of May at the Crowne

Plaza Hotel, saw participations from all the Municipalities Head of all the GCC countries from all the districts in the Kingdom.

The workshop was aimed at discussing the challenges related to the inspection and elimination of municipal irregularities and to assess new visions and laws that could help the Kingdom function better

and also strengthening ties with the other Gulf Countries.

“Workshops like these are really beneficial for us as we closely observe what the rest of the Gulf countries are doing and adopt and apply the strategies that best fits Bahrain,” said Mazen Ahmad Al-Omran, Vice Chairman of Capital Municipal Council.

“In the workshop, we

discussed all the possible violation under municipalities and further come up with better systems and better implementation laws.”

“As nature of the country is changing, with the advancement in urbanisation, it will be essential for the country to develop a new and an effective system that benefits the citizens and make

ssure the laws aren’t violated either” he added.

”We are trying to modify laws and ways to deal with citizens as the current approach is very traditional and it delays all other procedures,” said Ammar Yaser A Karim, Chief of Inspection and Control of Capital Municipality.

“We are trying to implement a new information system that

has access to all the database from all the ministries so that it is easier to get to the root of the violation and fix it immediately,” said Ammar Yaser A Karim

“We are further trying to make the municipalities more effective for the citizens by investing in new technology and to help achieve the Bahrain 2030 vision” he added.

Education Minister Dr. Majid Al Nuaimi during a ceremony to honour the winners of the 2nd Arab Reading Challenge - Bahrain Chapter. ICRF coordinator John Philip said that the organisation will provide the affected

persons food, besides helping them find accommodation.

“Thirty-eight people are affected by the fire. We will be providing them with coupons to buy food from the nearby restaurants. Though accommodation won’t be a big issue, we will be helping them

in every possible way,” said John Philip.

Philip, who lives next to the building, said that the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. The fire must have spread from the cigarette butts left outside the building, according to some residents.

Time is ripeto make Bahrain hub for education

Mohammed Zafran/[email protected]

Bahrain should consider transforming itself into a major

hub for education in the region, said a top Japanese expert while urging companies in the private sector here to join hands with their Japanese counterparts.

“Bahrain and Japan should collaborate to seize opportunities in the education sector,” said Yasuyuki Kumon highlighting the experience Japan has in this field.

He was speaking at an event titled

‘Japanese Perspective on the Middle East’ hosted by The Bahrain-Japan Business and Friendship Society at The Diplomat Radisson BLU Hotel, Residence & Spa.

Shedding light on the opportunities available in the sector, he pointed out that the labourers coming from Asian countries including Philippines need training before they join work.

“Currently, no training is provided to them when they go to Dubai or Saudi Arabia or any other GCC countries for the purpose.

“Being new to the region, they aren’t also familiar either with the language or with the work culture here and are completely lost

“Bahrain, however, is capable of providing this kind of training since the education sector here is advanced,” he explained.

The Kingdom, according to Kumon, got the right facilities to develop as a hub for training and educating labourers coming to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations from the Asian countries.

“7.7 million US dollar bid, for Sierra Leone 709-carat diamond, fails.”

“Oklahoma woman finds 2.65-carat diamond at Arkansas Park.”

Two news headlines, within 24 hours, of each other, featured diamonds of vastly different carat values. And they drew international attention for interesting reasons.

But, first, let me tell you about the second.Victoria Brodski, 25, travelled to the Mufreesboro

diamond park in the US State of Arkansas, on Saturday 6 May, for a birthday celebration with her family. And moments after entering, she picked up what she thought was a pretty piece of glass.

It turned out to be a diamond. But what I found shocking, in the news, is something else.According to Mufreesboro’s ‘Crater of Diamonds State

Park’ website, more than 75,000 diamonds have been discovered by people at the same park since 1906!

And finders are keepers!Following the park’s tradition of naming the finds, Victoria

Brodski named her gem the ‘Michelangelo Diamond’. After one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

So, isn’t it better for us to go diamond hunting there, than to go busting our backs here for a few dinars more? If you wish to join me, do let me know.

And don’t forget to bring a list of names for prospective finds. But exclude Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello. I have already shortlisted them for my finds.

Anyway, secondly, let us go back, to the first -- to the news headline which we can focus upon.

A diamond found in Sierra Leone last month, the size of a hen’s egg, was auctioned at Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Thursday 11 May 2017.

The bid went up to 7.7 million, but it didn’t meet the government’s target price. And the bid failed.

In case you missed, the finding of this second largest diamond (709-carat) in this West African nation is itself a fascinating piece of news.

Emmanuel Momoh, a pastor of a church, found this diamond while his men were digging in the mining sector of eastern Kono in Sierra Leone.

Then he, well, as a good Christian, handed over the diamond to the country’s President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma. The president thanked the pastor for not smuggling the diamond out of the country and for allowing the government to sell the historical stone in a set bidding process.

This is the second largest diamond found in Sierra Leone – the first was the 1972 Star of Sierra Leone (968.9-carat) – and it is also among the largest 20 diamonds ever found.

Now, the diamond will be auctioned again in Belgium to get the best price. But the government is not disclosing its reserve price.

I heard the pastor on BBC radio saying that he has complete confidence in his government that it would get him the best price. And according to some news reports, he plans to build a large church, a bridge and a school from the money he expects to receive from the sale.

Some five years ago, I had watched the movie ‘Blood Diamond’ set in the same country Sierra Leone. And I was very disturbed to learn how diamond trade in these war zones works. And how child soldiers are inducted and indoctrinated.

The evil nexus of underworld gunrunners, military leaders and corrupt governments was very well portrayed in the movie.

Which is why, now, it is heartening to see the people-government trust in a country ravaged by civil wars, revolutionary killings, and even the deadly virus Ebola.

It won’t be a bad idea, I think, to change plans - from going to that diamond park in Arkansas State of USA and go to the mining sector of eastern Kono in Sierra Leone.

World’s tallest building delayed to 2019: SaudiJeddah

The completion date for the world’s tallest tower has

been pushed back to 2019, a Saudi Arabian billionaire said yesterday, almost six years after launching the record-breaking project. Jeddah Tower is to rise more than a kilometre (almost 3,300 feet), placing it above Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

“The project was delayed... but it’ll open (in) 2019,” Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said during

a visit to the site beside the Red Sea. Alwaleed chairs Kingdom

Holding Co whose affiliated Jeddah Economic Company is developing the spire-topped landmark.

The project contractor Saudi Binladin Group was among construction firms in the kingdom that suffered financially after a collapse in oil revenues from 2014.

Alwaleed first announced plans for the tower in August 2011, saying it would take 36 months to build after the start

of construction.In November 2015, Kingdom

Holding said Jeddah Economic Company had reached a financing deal with Saudi Arabia’s Alinma Investment to finish the Jeddah Tower, which then had 26 floors.

Alwaleed on Thursday rode a construction elevator about 30 floors to meet reporters in the building, which already offers spectacular views over the rest of Jeddah. (AFP)

OPEC said yesterday that oil producers needed to make

more joint efforts to match supply and demand in the oil market in the face of rising output in the United States.

Ahead of a May 25 meeting of the cartel where its members and Russia are expected to roll over an agreement to cut production, OPEC said in its monthly market report that common policies were needed for market stability.

While decreased stocks and

an improving global economy were supporting oil demand, “continued rebalancing in the oil market by year-end will require the collective efforts of all oil producers to increase market stability,” OPEC said.

Global oil prices recently dipped briefly under $50 dollars per barrel for the first time since OPEC and Russia scaled back output as concerns whether the deal would be renewed and the impact of rising output in the United States weighed on the market.

OPEC members agreed in November to cut production by 1.2 million barrels per day for six months beginning from the start of the year in a bid to reduce the glut of oil supplies on the shore up prices.

Non-cartel producers led by Russia partially matched the cuts.

Oil prices have recovered somewhat this week as OPEC and Russian officials have signaled a renewal of the production deal is likely.

But the OPEC report

confirmed the cartel’s concern about a recovery in US oil output.

The cartel abandoned its traditional strategy of limiting supply to support prices between 2014 and 2016, stepping up production and causing a plunge in prices to under $30 per barrel as they sought to squeeze out higher cost US shale producers.

While US output fell last year, OPEC sees it recovering and expanding further in 2017.

Overall, the cartel expects

non-OPEC supply to increase by 0.95 million barrels per day, with the United States alone likely to contribute 0.82 million barrels per day.

Snapchat’s hopes to become the next big social media

platform hit a brutal reality check with the first earnings report from parent company Snap Inc.

The $2.2 billion loss reported for the first quarter along with weaker-than-expected revenue and sluggish user growth prompted a wave of selling and harsh comments from analysts about the firm known for its disappearing messages.

Snap disappointed analysts with reported revenue of $149.6 million in the three months ending in March.

That was up 286 percent from a year ago but below Wall Street estimates of around $158 million, and a significant miss for the fast-moving social media segment.

Snap said the number of daily active users grew to 166 million at the end of the quarter, a 36 percent increase from a year ago but just five percent higher than at the end of 2016.

Snap’s challenges are difficult because Facebook is introducing features based on Snapchat for its main social network as well as its Instagram platform,” Windsor said.

Rising oil prices lifted energy company stocks

in the Gulf yesterday, but indices were mixed due to some negative earnings reports, especially in Saudi Arabia.

The Riyadh index lost 0.7 per cent.

Savola Group, the kingdom’s largest food products company, reported a 96pc drop in first-quarter net profit, sending its shares down 2.4pc.

T h e N a t i o n a l Industrialisation Company (Tasnee), which reported a less than expected first-quarter net profit of 103.3 million riyals ($27.54m), fell 7.6pc.

Bupa Arabia, which posted a significant decline year on year in first-quarter profit to 36.7m riyals, dropped 6.3pc.

United Arab Emirates markets rose due to higher oil prices and positive first-quarter results over the past week. The Dubai index gained 0.7pc and the Abu Dhabi index was up 0.6pc.

Brent Crude broke through $50 a barrel this week, after a fall in U.S. inventories and a bigger-than-expected cut in Saudi supplies to Asia helped tightened the market.

Shares of state-owned Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) rose 12.5pc after the company swung to profit in the first quarter.

Dana Gas, which reported an $11 million first-quarter profit, up from $6m a year earlier, gained 2.3pc.

In Dubai, real estate companies including Emaar Malls and Damac Properties edged up while construction company Drake and Scull, the worst performing stock, fell 4.3pc.

The Qatar index was up by 1.2pc, following a major decline in April.

Thursday marked the last day of earnings reports in Saudi Arabia. In general, results have been in line or above estimates for most sectors, with earnings in the petrochemical and banking sector rebounding modestly compared with a year ago.

Construction related companies, however, including cement and contractors recorded a year on year decline in bottom line. The Saudi market has fallen 2.4pc since April 5, when the first Saudi company reported e a r n i n g s . (Reuters)

ISB MEGA FAIR & FOOD FESTIVAL 2017Date: October 12&13Venue: The Indian School Bahrain

The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) is gearing up for Mega Fair and Food Festival which will be held on October 12 and 13 in the Isa Town cam-pus. The ISB Fair is organized to gener-ate funds to sponsor needy students and for staff welfare. ISB Chairman Prince S Natarajan thanked the com-munity and media for the overwhelm-ing support to the previous fair, which was one of the best in terms of revenue generation and receivables. Last year around 800 students received benefit in the form of fee concession, he said. The School Fair is a carnival that witnesses a display of colours which include a variety of cultural programmes, orches-tra and musical bonanza. It also con-tains a food festival which is a tasty hit among the crowd that comes in the campus during the carnival. Almost 100 stalls from leading business houses showcase their products and services this year. ISB Secretary Dr. Shemily P John said that the Fair is a way to reach out to the needy children whose educational future otherwise will be hampered because of non-availability of funds. Being a community school it is the responsibility of the school to support such needy children. Proceeds of the Fair will also go towards staff welfare and creation of a staff contin-gency reserve. The school has one of the lowest fee structures and it caters to the educational needs of all sec-tions of the society. Majority of the students belong to the economically lower and middle class families. ISB Fair General Convenor Mohammed Hussain Malim requested the support of the media and the community to make this venture successful. The entire programme will be announced in due course of time. It is a great opportunity to every business and service provider to reach out to a large section of the Bahrain population during the carnival days.

A gathering could bring you lots of good news and useful information. The problem is that there might be too much. You will want to remember it all, but your memory may not be as sharp as usual. Before you attend a gathering, grab a notebook and pen. That way you can write down whatever you want to look into later. You generally enjoy your dreams, both the dreaming process and analysing them later. But tonight you might have too many to keep track of. While you will probably recall the most significant ones, it may be frustrating if you forget any of them. This might be the day to start a dream diary, if you don’t have one. Have fun!

Too many invitations to social events may come today. This might be one evening when you want to relax at home, but you won’t want to say no to anyone. Analyse each invitation. Consider the location, host, other guests - whatever seems most significant to you. Attend only the ones you think you will really enjoy. Follow your heart.

Today you might work on your spiritual practice or studies. You could read a book on the subject, attend a lecture, or practice some kind of discipline such as yoga or meditation. The only caveat is don’t try to do too much at once. You could tire yourself out. Concentrate on one thing at a time. The information will still be there tomorrow!Physical pleasure may be at the top of your priority list today. You might want to go to your favourite restaurant and have a great meal, including wine, appetizers, and dessert. Or you might feel especially energetic and want to take your partner for a complete spa treatment. Whatever your desires, exercise some restraint You can get too much of a good thing!Love matters may prove too intense today. You may be having a rough week. Your partner may be especially demanding of your time and energy. This might be a good day to schedule some time alone. Go for a massage, sauna, or hot tub - by yourself - and simply relax. That way you will be more refreshed when you meet with your beloved in the evening. You’ve been hoping for a quiet day on the job, but too many calls could come your way. You might have to juggle several at once. Don’t try to deal with every problem. Exercise your triage abilities and take care of the most pressing first. Let the others go, if necessary. You aren’t doing anyone any favours by getting too distracted.

Were you planning to go shopping today? If you can, put it off until tomorrow. You could be tempted by too many items that seem wonderful in the store but are nothing but a bother once you get them home. If you must go, make the effort to bypass shops where you might fall into this trap. You don’t want to have to make a second trip to bring back returns.

The temptation to take centre stage might be too strong to resist. Someone may ask you to tell a story. Your gift with words and vivid imagination should serve you well. Keep it brief. If you go on too long, your friends could fidget. Time your performance by watching their expressions. Do it right and you will be asked to do it again.

You look especially attractive today, and it’s doing wonders for your self-esteem. Even members of your household notice. But you probably feel more like staying in than going out. If you want a romantic partner to notice how you look, it might be a good idea to extend an invitation to visit your home. You will get to stay in.

Today, you might want to make an unqualified declaration of love. That’s fine if you’ve been involved for a while, although you could overwhelm your partner. If the relationship is new, beware! This could feel like too much too soon. Your friend could respond by backing away. Use restraint or you might have the opposite effect to the one you want.

A friend may offer you a gift today. It could involve money, favours, time, items you need, or something else. Be discriminating about what you accept, and make sure you offer to reciprocate. Insist, if you must. As generous as your friend may be now, later he or she could feel used or else call in some favours that you aren’t willing to perform.

More than 1,000 people have died in

an outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria, the Centre for Disease Control said yesterday, but added that the spread of the disease is slowing.

The outbreak has mostly affected children in Africa’s most populous country.

As of May 9, a total of 13,420 suspected cases had been reported in 23 states with 1,069 deaths, giving a fatality ratio of eight per cent, the CDC said in a statement.

The northern states of Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kebbi, which were the

worst affected, have all seen a drop in the number of cases.

Two others which were also badly hit -- Kebbi and Niger -- recorded no deaths, the CDC said.

A new strain of meningitis C was first reported in Zamfara last November and spread to 22 other states in northern Nigeria. A mass vaccination programme was started to limit its spread.

Meningitis is caused by different types of bacteria, six of which can cause epidemics. It is transmitted between people through coughs and sneezes, close contact and cramped living conditions.

The UN’s top court will hold an emergency

hearing on Monday as India seeks to stop Pakistan from executing an Indian national accused of spying.

New Delhi has already protested to Islamabad over the death sentence imposed on Kulbushan Sudhir Jadhav by a Pakistani military court, after he was found guilty in a closed heading last month.

Jadhav was arrested in the southwestern province of Balochistan last year and Pakistani officials claim he has confessed to spying for Indian intelligence services.

But India has denied he was a spy, and this week lodged a protest with the International Court of Justice in The Hague accusing Pakistan of “egregious violations of the Vienna convention”.

Three suspects in last month’s bombing in

the Saint Petersburg metro have been charged for their involvement in a “terrorist act”, Russian investigators said yesterday.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said suspects Bakhram Ergashev, Ibragimzhon Ermatov and Makhamadyusuf Mirzaalimov had been charged with involvement

in a “terrorist act” and for having illegally used explosives.

Seven other suspects in the April 3 attack, which killed 15 people, will be charged in the near future, the committee said.

The Imam Shamil Battalion, a group suspected of links to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the bombing, US monitor SITE Intelligence Group said last month.

The US Central Intelligence Agency said

it had formed a special unit dedicated to assessing North Korea’s nuclear weapons threat.

The CIA created its first single country-focused mission centre, pulling together resources from

a range of units to collect and analyse information on Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missile technology that could extend its military threat across the Pacific.

The move comes as North Korea appears poised to undertake its sixth nuclear test, a move that would exacerbate

jitters across East Asia. The US has not ruled out

a military strike to prevent Pyongyang from advancing its nuclear capabilities.

“Just as the threats facing our nation are dynamic, so too must the CIA continue to evolve to address them,” CIA spokesman Jonathan Liu said. (AFP)

China tests ‘Lunar Palace’ as it eyes moon missionBeijing

Chinese students will live in a laboratory simulating a

lunar-like environment for up to 200 days as Beijing prepares for its long-term goal of putting humans on the moon.

Four postgraduate students from the capital’s astronautics research university Beihang entered the 160-square-metre (1,720-square-foot) cabin -- dubbed the “Yuegong-1”, or “Lunar Palace” -- on Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The volunteers will live in the sealed lab to simulate a long-term, self-contained space mission with no input from

the outside world, Xinhua said.

Human waste will be treated with a bio-fermentation

process, and experimental crops and vegetables grown with the help of food and waste byproducts.

Human remains found in a French forest have

been identified as those of Seamus Ruddy, one of the “disappeared” of Northern Ireland’s conflict who was murdered in 1985, a panel said Wednesday.

“We were looking for Seamus Ruddy, and we found him,” a spokesman for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains (ICLVR), Dennis Godfrey, said.

He said French authorities used a familial DNA sample to match Ruddy to remains found in the Bord forest south of

The 33-year-old was working as an English teacher

in Paris when he vanished in May 1985, becoming one of the 16 “disappeared” of Northern Ireland.

The 23rd British Club Annual Competition for ‘budding aviators’ is

set for today at the British Club premises in Mahooz starting from 3pm and organised by the Llongsteppers cycling section of the club.

It features a children’s category up to the age of 18 and a ‘not so grown-up’ adult category.

Participants are urged to wear fancy dress focused on popular and topical themes and personalities when they dive or jump into the pool.

All participants are measured how far they can ‘fly’ down the length of the pool, but currently no one in the history of the competition has yet to jump the entire distance of the pool so far.

Annually around 50 participate in the children and adult sections and generate a great deal of support from the watching spectators in this fun event which is also a major charity event fund-raiser, which this year is for The Mission For Seafarers

Society.Participants can pay BD1 for a private

entry or a BD20 company sponsored entry. Every year a similar contest takes place in Sussex on the South of England coast where “budding aviators” attempt to fly by jumping off a pier. It started in 1971 at Selsey then went to Bognor Regis down the coast in 1978.

Since 2010, both Bognor Regis and Worthing organise the International Birdman Series with big prize money on offer.

To date none has succeeded and all have been caught by the safety net of the English Channel.

The “Spirit” of the British Club event is to have fun and have a great day out and see who can Fly The Furthest.

Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories for ‘Furthest Flight’, ‘Best Costume’ or ‘Machine’ and ‘Best Entertainment Value’.

Terme Luigiane, Italy

Silvan Dillier was in disbelief after bouncing back from a puncture to cap a 200km

breakaway with the biggest win of his career in a thrilling Giro d’Italia sixth stage on

Thursday.BMC’s Dillier

suffered a flat tyre in the

opening metres of an

undulating 217km ride from Reggio di

Calabria to Terme Luigiane, the first first stage of the 100th Giro edition held on the Italian mainland.

But, with a stage win on his mind, the 26-year-old Swiss chased back on, fought to help a five-man breakaway escape the peloton and, in a thrilling duel with Jasper Stuyven, prevailed in the drive to an uphill finish line that proved slightly too steep for

the Belgian.“The stage started pretty bad for me, I had a

flat tyre at kilometre zero then I chased back and fought to get into the breakaway,” said Dillier.

“To beat Jasper Stuyven in a sprint like this is crazy for me! I still can’t believe this. It’s the biggest victory so far for me. It’s fantastic.”

Luxembourg’s Bob Jungels retained the race leader’s pink jersey after finishing eighth, 39secs behind the frontrunners, to maintain his six-second lead on Sky’s Geraint Thomas.

“We were hoping the breakaway would go until the end so the (time) bonuses were gone,” said Jungels.

It meant plenty of stage victory hopefuls were left disappointed after a routine day in the saddle turned into a desperate chase.

Dillier, Stuyven, Trek teammate Mads Pedersen, Austrian Lukas Postlberger and Italian Simone Andreetta raced to a lead of nearly nine minutes at one stage.

That was cut to five and a half minutes with 100km to race but a lack of collaboration in the chase meant the frontrunners were still nearly three minutes in front 10km from the finish.

As they headed for a technical finish featuring a series of small climbs, descents and tight hairpin bends, Pedersen peeled off, his legs no longer able to maintain the unrelenting pace.

But Stuyven, who claimed his maiden Grand Tour stage win at the Vuelta a Espana last year, remained defiant, launching an attack nearly six kilometres out that proved fatal to Andreetta’s bid to hand Italy their maiden win of the 100th edition.

“He wasn’t doing a lot of work with us, so it was best to get rid of him in case he’d kept his energy for the finish,” said Stuyven of Andreetta.

Stuyven and Dillier then dropped Postlberger in the final 300 metres, but the Belgian was left agonisingly short as Dillier proved strongest to the line. “You don’t get many chances like this. I had targeted this stage,” said Stuyven, who finished fourth at the Paris-Roubaix one-day classic earlier in the season.

“I was a little surprised by Dillier, but this finish had an eight percent gradient, which is a little difficult for me.

“I’m very disappointed.” Postlberger, who claimed victory in the opening stage in Olbia, Sardinia with an audacious attack that stunned the peloton in the final kilometre, said: “I wanted to attack in the uphill section, but after 200 kilometres of a breakaway, I didn’t know how my legs would be.”

At 224km, Friday’s seventh stage from Castrovillari to Alberobello is the longest of the race. (AFP)

Terme Luigiane

Italian Simone Andreetta said his embattled Bardiani team are focused

on capping their controversy-hit Giro d’Italia with a stage win after he finished fourth in a sixth stage thriller yesterday.

Second division Bardiani, invited as one of four ‘wildcard’ entries to the 100th edition of the race, were rocked a day before the start when Stefano Pirazzi and Nicola Ruffoni were thrown out after failing out-of-competition tests for growth hormones.

They were sent home pending the results of a ‘B’ sample that could lead to their sacking after the race finishes in Milan on May 28.

But Andreetta said Bardiani are keen to make amends, after he finished fourth on a dramatic sixth stage from

Reggio di Calabria to Terme Luigiane that saw Switzerland’s Silvan Dillier, of BMC, prevail.

“We showed that, despite the shock at the start of the Giro, we’re reacting. We’re a very close group,” said Andreetta, who was part of a five-man breakaway that outfoxed the chasing peloton.

“We’ll try again, for sure”.Andreetta, racing his maiden Giro

d’Italia, saw his own bid peter out six kilometres from the finish when he failed to respond to an attack by Trek’s Jasper Stuyven, who finished second.

The Belgian later explained: “He (Andreetta) wasn’t doing a lot of work with us, so it was best to get rid of him in case he’d kept his energy for the finish.”

Gianni Infantino slammed “fake news” and “alternative facts”

surrounding FIFA and insisted football’s scandal-ridden governing body had changed in an impassioned speech to its annual congress in Bahrain yesterday.

Fifteen months after being elected as president to bring forward wholesale change to a disgraced organisation, Infantino also claimed FIFA’s corruption crisis was over and would never happen again.

The Congress confirmed that the two men responsible for rooting out corruption in the world game -- Hans-Joachim Eckert and Cornel Borbely -- would be replaced.

The meeting backed the recommendation of the all-powerful FIFA Council, chaired by Infantino, to replace them with the former president of the European Court of Justice Vassilios Skouris of Greece and Colombia’s Maria Claudia Rojas.

But Infantino denied this had put back any anti-corruption agenda.

“FIFA has changed now, this is a new FIFA and we are new people here and we act with facts, not with words,” he told Congress.

Invoking Donald TrumpInfantino then invoked American President Donald Trump: “Fake news, alternative facts, these terms did not exist until some time ago, they have become en vogue.

“There’s a lot of fake news and alternative facts about FIFA circulating -- FIFA-bashing has become a national sport, especially in some countries.”

Asked afterwards to give an example of fake news, Infantino responded: “Generally, it’s my feeling.”

But, alternating between English, French, German and Spanish,

Infantino said his organisation was now different.

“Nunca mas -- never again,” Infantino added in reference to corruption once more rearing its ugly head. “If there is anyone in this room or outside of this room who still thinks he can enrich himself, he can abuse football, I have one clear and strong message to tell him: leave, leave football and leave football now,” added Infantino.

Getting into his stride, he also reaffirmed his belief that FIFA’s finances were healthy, saying: “We don’t have to bullshit with alternative figures.”

Infantino also criticised “highly-paid experts” who did little to help reform.

‘Little change since Blatter’Jordan’s Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein said that things hadn’t moved on from Infantino’s predecessor, Sepp Blatter. “I think it is fairly obvious that a lot of things have not changed,” said Prince Ali.

Also on Thursday, a decision on Israeli clubs playing in the West Bank was pushed back until October.

“We will take responsibility and we will take a decision on this matter,” said Infantino.

The Palestine Football Association (PFA) argues that the presence of six Israeli clubs on its territory  is in breach of FIFA statutes, but Israel argues the rules are unenforceable as there is no permanent border.

The Congress, meanwhile, ratified a decision to open up the bidding process for the 2026 World Cup to any federation except those from Asia and Europe.

Infantino also raised the prospect of

a “world women’s league”, but gave no further details.

And there could potentially be new regulations placed on transfers, he speculated, following news earlier this week that FIFA is investigating the £89.3 million ($111m, 105.2m euros) transfer of Paul Pogba to Manchester United from Juventus. (AFP)

Madrid

World number one Andy Murray’s

slump in form continued as he crashed out of the

Madrid Masters third round 6-3, 6-3 to lucky loser Borna Coric on

Thursday.Rafael Nadal extended his flawless

record on clay this season to 12-0 with a 6-3, 6-1

destruction of Nick Kyrgios.And defending

champion Novak Djokovic

also eased into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Feliciano Lopez.

Coric was only handed a late reprieve to enter the draw in Madrid after losing in qualifying to Mikhail Kukushkin. “After one match of the quallies where I lost and I was booking my flight back to home,” said Coric.

“I couldn’t imagine this when I woke up this morning, I always believed but I wasn’t sure how I was going to play. “In the end I played as I had dreamed.”

However, Murray cut a frustrated figure as he was swept aside by the

20-year-old Croatian for the second time in the pair’s four meetings.

Coric broke the fragile Murray serve three times in the first set under the roof at the Manolo Santana centre court due to rain in the Spanish capital.

Nadal had no such troubles as he dominated Kyrgios to beat the Australian in just over an hour.

“I played really well tonight. Right from the start I made very few errors,” said the Spaniard.

“To win 6-3, 6-1 against an opponent as good as Nick, isn’t normal.”

Nadal faces David Goffin in

Friday’s quarter-finals after the Belgian beat world number six Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-2.

After suffering his own struggles of late, Djokovic was encouraged by his display in seeing off Lopez and a partisan crowd to reach the last eight. “If you’re playing against a Spanish player in Madrid, it’s obviously a different game, it’s a different feeling,” said Djokovic.
