The purpose of a newsletter is to provide specialized information to a targeted audience. Newsletters can be a
great way to market your product or service, and also create credibility and build your organization’s identity
among peers, members, employees, or vendors.
First, determine the audience of the newsletter. This could be anyone who might benefit from the information it
contains, for example, employees or people interested in purchasing a product or requesting your service.
You can compile a mailing list from business reply cards, customer information sheets, business cards collected
at trade shows, or membership lists. You might consider purchasing a mailing list from a company.
If you explore the Publisher catalog, you will find many publications that match the style of your newsletter.
Next, establish how much time and money you can spend on your newsletter. These factors will help determine
how frequently you publish the newsletter and its length. It’s recommended that you publish your newsletter at
least quarterly so that it’s considered a consistent source of information. Your customers or employees will
look forward to its arrival.

Susanna’s Chronicles
Introducing Our New Executive Director
SWH receives calls and emails weekly from various community sources asking for updates on the happenings at the house. Many groups and organizations visit SWH and leave items from our “Wish List”; volunteer services and resources towards the general upkeep of the house; and volunteer to help with special events focused around the children. I thank everyone for your ongoing financial support. SWH would not be as stable as it is without your contributions. Special thanks to our grant and foundation donors for their continued support of our mission towards women and children. Remember our board members are ready to visit your group or organization and discuss the mission of SWH. I hope you enjoy our latest newsletter and I’d love to hear your comments and suggestions.

Board President’s Message
The Mission of
Susanna Wesley
House, Inc., is to
assist women in
need and their
dependent
children; to
provide a safe,
clean home; and to
ensure a viable
program for the
residents to obtain
independent
living.
Dear Susanna Wesley House (SWH) Family, 2012 has started off with a bang! New leadership (I’m the newly elected board president), new partnership with the YWCA of Greater Baltimore, work-ing on new plans for renovating 607 and 609 with Episcopal Housing Corpora-tion; and all the while, the mission of SWH continues. I am so proud of the dedication, service and commitment that our faith partners, organizations, donors, committee and board members have towards SWH. The Board and I thank our Executive Director, Janet R. Adams, for her determination, steadfastness and commitment as SWH continues to grow.
Janet Rene Adams was hired as the Susanna Wesley House’s Executive Director in November 2011. She brings to the table a wealth of experience that we know the organization and the families we serve ,will benefit from. Janet has sixteen years of experience in the fields of organization and resource development for community, faith-based and government initiatives. She is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE International); Previous Member of Maryland Nonprofits’ Ethics Standards Committee; and Graduate of the Family Bible Institute, College and Seminary with a Masters in Business Management.
Janet has worked for some great Baltimore organizations including Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training, The Franciscan Center, and Marian House. Having a heart for those in crisis, Janet has exhibited a strong commitment to impacting and changing lives for the better. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve on behalf of Susanna Wesley House. As
a mother, I can understand how disheartening it must be to want to better your life, and
the lives of your children– yet not know how to get started. SWH is the help that mothers
in this position need. I’m glad to be a part of the mission.” Janet
SWH welcomes Janet Adams, and invites you to give her a call or visit SWH to meet Janet in person.

S U S A N N A ’ S C H R O N I C L E S
As you may know, Susanna Wesley House, located at 609 Park Avenue, was renovated in 2002 to provide transitional supportive housing for up to nine previously homeless women and their children. The prototype for the remodeled building was provided by our program partner of ten years (2002-2012); the Women’s Housing Coalition (WHC). Our work with WHC has been a successful journey; together we have housed and provided supportive services for 50+ families. With a landlord/tenant annual agreement, Susanna Wesley House has been responsible for property safety and maintenance, while Women's Housing Coalition offered supportive services to the residents via an onsite case manager. Regrettably, Women’s Housing Coalition has decided not to renew its lease for 2012, and will be offering its families other housing opportunities. Although we know that a continued partnership with WHC would have yielded continual success, we also understand that prudent leadership must do what is necessary and timely, in fulfilling its specified mission. We support Women’s Housing Coalition and its residents during this transition, and we wish them our sincere best. Fortunately, the mission of Susanna Wesley House will not falter as a result of this change. We have already identified a new and promising partner—the YWCA Greater Baltimore. As a long-standing organization in the state of Maryland, the YWCA’s commitment to helping homeless women and children achieve greater self-sufficiency and happier, healthier lives, is very consistent with the mission of Susanna Wesley House. The YWCA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mary Chesnut, has sat on the Susanna Wesley House's Building Committee for over a year. The Committee is overseeing the renovations of our other property at 607 Park Avenue. The primary purpose of the renovations is to restore the building so that SWH can offer additional supportive housing units for the homeless in Baltimore. After considering our options for the future, amid Women’s Housing Coalition’s departure, we decided to ask the YWCA to not only maintain its support of the 607 Park project, but to partner with us at 609 Park. They agreed without hesitation. Similar to the relationship we had with WHC, Susanna Wesley House will oversee the property maintenance at 609, and the YWCA will provide onsite, intensive case management and supportive services to the new SWH residents. The Board and staff of Susanna Wesley House are elated by this new endeavor; and with great anticipation, look forward to working with the YWCA. The YWCA’s leadership has expressed mutual expectation and excitement. Learn more about the YWCA at www.ywcagreaterbaltimore.org

Simply Put Window Dressing Project
The Maryland Chapter of the Window Covering Association of America (WCAA) is unveiling their window treatment creations for the Susanna Wesley House in Baltimore, in Summer 2012. The Susanna Wesley House was selected for this year’s community project. The chapter’s goal is to create a warm and welcoming home for the families residing at the Susanna Wesley House and add a touch of beauty to the rooms in the house. The Maryland Chapter of WCAA is a part of the National Window Covering Association of America. The WCAA Local Chapters and the National Office’s purpose is to promote professionalism and encourage education, to aid in the profitability and success of members, and to be a voice in the window covering industry. Chapters help raise awareness of local causes by getting involved in charity projects. For example, the Maryland Window Covering Association donated free labor for the Extreme Makeover Home Edition in Baltimore that was aired September 26, 2010. The following individuals are recognized for their contribution to the SWH project: Main Floor design and fabrication by Pam Gough of Creative Drapery & Décor; Family Area designed by Paula Henry of “Simply Put Interiors, Inc. and fabricated by Paula Snyder of “Paula Snyder Window Treatments.” Fabrication and design for kitchen window treatments: Kris Ozgar of Kris’ Kreations; Trish Albano of “Wellington Interiors”; Lisa Bower of “Madella’s Decorating“ and Margaret Blunt of “Sew Beautiful”. A special thanks to United Supply Company for donations of lining and hardware. For a complete listing of the WCAA Members go to http://www.wcaa.org and click on “Find a Professional”. If you have any questions about the Maryland WCAA, please contact the Chapter President, Kris Ozgar at [email protected]. We at Susanna Wesley House, can’t wait to see the end results of this fantastic project. We thank Peg Millender, our long-time, faithful volunteer, for initiating the contact with the professionals who are committing their talents and time to this unique project.

The SWH ‘Place Lift’ 2010-2011
A variety of work and upgrades have taken place at Susanna Wesley House during the past few years. Roof and cornice repairs were completed to the front of the building, which immediately put an end to water running down the facade. Because the cause of the damage has been addressed, we are now able to repair the woodwork and paint around the entrance. This is a huge relief, as the presence of flaking lead paint at the entrance is a danger to the younger residents. HVAC units were replaced, which resulted in a more comfortable home overall, less reports of illnesses, and lower electricity usage billed to our partner organization. It has been especially helpful to have heat in the basement computer resource and playroom (SKIP room). The children use the computers to do homework and the moms use them for typing resumes and looking for employment. In addition to fixing the heat in the SKIP room, a number of school quality educational toys and furniture designed to promote imaginative play have been purchased, and are receiving a lot of use. All of the kitchen floors have been replaced, which has met with great approval from residents and our supporters alike. The new floors are a one piece product (Naturcor) that will not warp, crack or fade. Spills that used to cause damage to the subfloor and ceiling below are now easily cleaned up. In the units, worn carpeting was replaced with laminate flooring, a more resilient choice for keeping up with active children. Beautiful new window blinds were donated by Good Shepherd UMC and installed throughout the building by a volunteer team from Heery International.
‘Heery International, Inc. received a 2011 Mayor’s Business
Recognition Award for their community service at the Susanna Wesley
House.’ Thanks to Judy Brown, SWH Board Member
Susanna Wesley is now embarking on a new capital project; the concurrent renovation of 607 and 609 Park Avenue. This renovation project’s goal is to maximize the space in two buildings to accommodate as many homeless women and children as possible. Our strategy, working in partnership with the YWCA Greater Baltimore, is to double our capacity to serve. Please look for periodic updates on our progress via our website at www.SusannaWesley.org or e-Chronicle Update via Constant Contact emails. We thank you in advance for your prayers and continued support.

The Difference Ways You Can Support Our Work
There are several ways to give to Susanna Wesley House and you can be sure that your donation will be
used to benefit the residents of SWH. Donations help us maintain the 609 Park building; with inspections,
repairs, and renovations. Donations will also be used toward our planned renovations for the 607 Park
building. Your support helps us keep our residents, particularly the children, safe and secure, as they
transition to more stable and independent lives.
Gifts by Check or Money Order
Susanna Wesley House welcomes gifts made by check or money order. Please make your check or money order
payable to Susanna Wesley House and mail to: 609 Park Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21201.

will match their employees' charitable contributions. Contact your employer's human resources office to see if
your gift can be matched. If so, simply request a matching gift form from your employer and send the signed form
to Susanna Wesley House.
In Honor Of or In Memory Of Gifts
Making a gift that helps others is a wonderful way to celebrate a milestone or remember an important person in
your life. In Honor Of donations are usually made in celebration of events such as graduations, weddings,
promotions, and retirements. These donations take on a new meaning when you help to improve the lives of
children and women in the Baltimore area. Likewise, remembering those who have touched your life in a
special way takes on greater meaning when your generosity helps those in need. Each gift is acknowledged by
a card sent to the honored person or family of the deceased person in whose name the gift is being made. The
notification does not include the amount of the gift. However, as a donor, you will receive a separate gift
acknowledgement for your own records.

in your estate is a special and lasting gift. Please call or have your personal representative call Janet Adams at
(410) 837-3787 to discuss this option.
In Kind Donations
