WELCOME

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to experience this inaugural SU’s Got Talent Showcase during Coming Back Together 2014! I ebulliently greet you. Tonight’s showcase is the culmination of a raw concept embraced by many talented professionals and entertainment experts. It is our hope that you enjoy the diversity of the presentations as much as we enjoyed designing them.

There were two rules for participating in the SU’s Got Talent Showcase: 1) Be an SU student or SU alum, 2. Be an African American or Latino. No exceptions. Students and alumni purposively worked side by side from planning, to production to the culminating event --- the final performance.

The result: approximately a 60-year span of performers both on and off stage learning, growing and experiencing one another’s world. With active participation of 120 people, expect 120 minutes of continuous entertainment. If I could have given every one of you a catheter, I would have. You will not even want to miss the entertaining surprise during intermission.

I thank the entire village it took to manifest this vision. I especially thank my right hand ‘Joseph Edwards’, and my left hand ‘Dianna Crawford’ through this process. I ova’ appreciate you two. I further thank our advocate, Miguel Sapp, whose professional ethos is built on integrity and delivering on promise.

At the core of SU’s Got Talent mission is the underlying purpose to create a landscape built on inclusivity, connectivity and most of all generosity of our time, talents and resources. There are a lot of brown and black students relying on us and we will continue to come back and give back!

Overall, SU’s Got Talent was designed to pull your heartstrings while bridging both historical and current events. So, let happy happen and enjoy.

…appreciatin’ you,

June M. GrantProducer

It’s no surprise that June M. Grant, the producer of SU’s Got Talent, is performing tonight. Although Ms. Grant is a businesswoman, she has a passionate appreciation for the arts. Prior to attending Syracuse, the Brooklyn native and Air Force brat attended New York City’s Fashion Industries School of Design. She also attended a vocational junior high school where she majored in dance and worked with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and trained with the Big Apple Circus.

Ms. Grant’s company, The J. Grant Group, identifies symbiotic partnerships to create strategic alliances between clients and federal agencies, nongovernmental organizations and larger businesses to solve problems while aiding mutual growth and development. She maintains clients within the arts industry to feed her art-enthusiast passion.

Ms. Grant graduated from SU’s Whitman School of Management in 1987 with a dual Bachelor of Science in Transportation and Distribution Management and Management Information Systems. She developed her business skills during an 18-year career in the corporate world. After working for Ford Motor Company, Motown Animation & Filmworks and Owens Corning, she began assisting in the growth and development of small to medium-size businesses. Ms. Grant has worked with clients in industries such as fashion, entertainment, information technology, finance, leadership, training, construction and international development. “The industries are diverse, but people worldwide are essentially the same,” she says. “They want to be valued, respected, heard, and have the holes in their floor filled. I like to think I do that, creatively.”

Dianna Giselle Crawford is a 1987 SU graduate with dual degrees in Marketing and Management Information Systems who has been singing since she could talk. At the tender age of five she would put a plastic flower in her hair, use a pencil as a cigarette holder and sing to her captive audience of stuffed animals and the family dog.

Ms. Crawford honed her talents at Carnegie Hall Studios studying under the late, great tenor, Dr. Chauncey Northern. After working with several well known New York producers in studio sessions, she packed her bags and moved to Atlanta, Georgia to further her career. It is there she was discovered during a studio session for a local rap group and inked a recording deal with Warner Brothers Records as an artist.

Ms. Crawford has shared the stage with jazz greats such as Lionel Hampton and Dionne Warwick and she has received vocal credits on recordings of several Atlanta R & B and rap artists, and on Sir Elton John’s tribute to Fats Domino. She is currently featured in the special events band Platinum. Ms. Crawford has been described as having the power of Tina Turner and the grace of Sarah Vaughan.

In addition to her passion for the arts, Dianna Crawford is a full-time Realtor serving the Metropolitan Atlanta area. She can be reached at the following: [email protected]

Syracuse University’s Citrus Sweethearts was founded by Simonisa Selmon in 2013. The hardworking lady students of Citrus Sweethearts are the epitome of an HBCU-style dance line. The format of a “versatile” auxiliary derived from corps-style band concepts of the South. Citrus Sweethearts incorporate a style of dance called of J-setting (major-ette, jazz, ballet, hip-hop and drill). Syracuse’s newly formed dance organization was based on the idea of bringing its founder’s southern heritage to an east coast-based campus. The women of Citrus Sweethearts are fierce, and empower themselves through poise and performance...both on stage and in their personal and professional lives. Although Mario Bryant’s major at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management was Management Information Systems; this Long Island New York native has always had a passion for music and dancing.

Mr. Bryant’s appetite for the arts began in high school as a “street crew” Hip-Hop DJ and progressed to college as a House Music DJ for his Fraternity. However, his entertainment exposure expanded after pledging Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and becoming “step-master” where he choreographed and performed in step shows on campus and the NYCmetro area.

Growing up in a single parent African-American household, Mr. Bryant’s Latin influence came solely from his Grandmother; a Native of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It wasn’t until after college and through traveling to several Latin American countries, where his passion for Latin music and dancing ignited. Mr. Bryant sought out a dance school for instruction and eventually landed on the door steps of Piel Canela New York Center for Latin Arts in 2008 and in a few months joined the dance company.

Mario and his professional dance team are available to perform and provide services for a wide variety of events both domestically and internationally. To learn more, contact visit www.pielcaneladancers.com

In 1988, the SU Caribbean Student Association (CSA) along with Rhoda Arrindell created the Kalabash Dance Troupe. In the fall of 2001, Kalabash moved away from CSA to further develop its unique qualities as a dance troupe. Subsequently the troupe experienced a newfound growth and expanded in many ways, including incorporating both female and male dancers from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures. Today Kalabash has members who hail from many places ranging from Trinidad and Jamaica to California and Alaska

Kalabash, or calabash, is a bowl used to hold items that mean the most to you and is a mixture of culture just as SU’s Kalabash is a mixture of culture. To its members, this is more than just a dance team; it has become more of a family. Being so far away from home, this troupe has become a place for wisdom, support, friendship, laughter and love for the troupe. Kalabash Dance Troupe continues to grow and is only getting better with time. Since its formation, Kalabash has been invited to perform at various on and off campus events including the Festival of Nations, an annual event celebrated by the entire Syracuse community.

Creations Dance Company provides a unique opportunity for the students at Syracuse University to experience traditional African pieces as well as modern dance styles. Creations was founded by ten dynamic women of color when African-Americans were not given the chance to perform with other dance groups on campus. Creations originally only performed traditional African dance, but their repertoire grew to include gospel, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, and tap. In every show, Creations Dance Company performs at least one African dance to remain true to the original intentions of the founders.

At an early age, Stephen ‘Squid’ A. Soleyn was fascinated with his parents’ console stereo and always liked to play the 45’s and LP’s that belonged to his sister. Mr. Soleyn became totally immersed in the new Hip Hop culture, particularly in the art of deejaying. He would go to local parties and watch the DJ’s work. He would eventually get his own DJ equipment and spin at a few local events. He already had the nickname “Squid”, but figured it would also be a good DJ name because it seemed to fit in with being able to master the turntables as if he had many hands working at once.

When he arrived Syracuse University in 1983, he became enamored with the party scene. There were already a few DJ’s spinning the various events, but Mr. Soleyn was determined to get his foot in the door somehow. He finally got his chance in 1984 when he convinced the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta to listen to a demo tape. The party was very successful and other offers started to pour in quickly. DJ Squid had become one of SU’s resident DJ’s for many years following playing at many of the “M” Street bars and then took his skills and love of music to the airwaves when he was instrumental in the launch of radio station AM1490-WOLF and also a host of “Club Beat Videos”. He has played at events along the east coast, and now he’s back where it all began....SYRACUSE....CBT!! DJ Squid can be reached at [email protected].
