for leading youth through an

11-week study

J. Wayne Jenkins

rior to the first meeting make an appointment with the studentyou will be counseling. Invite the youth to your home for a meal,if possible. Begin building a caring relationship throughshared experiences and trust by doing the following:

• Tell what Christ has done in your own life.• Give the youth a copy of Survival Kit for Youth and review pages 3-5. Briefly

explain the truths that will be covered.• If the youth does not have a study Bible, take her to a book store to purchase

one.• Point out the Scripture memory cards in the center of Survival Kit. Explain

the importance of using these cards and of memorizing the assigned Scripturememory verses each week.

• Discuss the contents of pages 6-9 in Survival Kit. Explain that these fivestages can be avoided. The daily studies are designed to help the newChristian move into a more meaningful Christian life unhindered by stages.Encourage the consistent completion of each day’s work.

• Assign pages 10-17 for the first week of study. Explain that about 20 minutesa day is required to complete each daily section.

• Exchange telephone numbers.• Promise to work through your Survival Kit day by day so that you can bet-

ter understand the youth’s pilgrimage.• Select a convenient time to meet each week for the next 11 weeks.• Close with prayer.

Follow-upDuring the first week, call the youth to see that she has started the daily studyhabit. Assure her that you are praying for her each day. Ask if there are any spe-cial prayer requests that you should know about.

[one-to-one plan]

Orientation Meeting

Scripture Memory ReviewEach week, there will be Scripture memory verses to review. During each ses-sion, you should follow this pattern.• Quote the verse, including the reference.• Ask the student to quote the verse.• Preview the verse for the coming week.• Both of you share special meanings that the verse has had in your lives.

ExplainingAssurance CheckupUse 2 Corinthians 5:17 to illustrate that if we are in Christ, we are new crea-tures. Describe changes that Christ has brought about in your life. Pray together, thanking God that Christ has come into your lives. Then talk about any doubtsthat the youth is having. Mention doubts that you have had. Explain how Godhelped you to overcome these.

Deal with Questions About the Material StudiedThe student’s questions each week will be unique. This One-to-One Plan willsuggest five areas representative of things commonly asked or brought up by stu-dents that will hopefully help you explore the student’s questions.• I find it hard to study Survival Kit each day. It is a discipline. Share

how you have benefited from having a personal quiet time. Nothing worth-while comes without planning for it.

• Is it absolutely necessary to memorize Scriptures? No, but having

Scripture in your memory is a powerful tool to use against temptation.

Knowing Scripture by memory gives you a ready resource for constant spir-

itual growth and strength.

• Does prayer change anything? Won’t God do the right thingwhether we ask Him to do it or not? This misses the whole point ofprayer. Through prayer God equips us to be channels for His grace and Hiswork. Prayer builds closeness in our relationship with God.

• I am having difficulty with some of my old habits. Review pages 15 -16 in Survival Kit. Discuss the power Christ has (Matt. 28:18) and the avail-ability of that power now for overcoming bad habits. Read Matthew 6:13.Note that Jesus recognized the danger of temptation and evil. Say that anexcellent way to overcome temptation is to avoid tempting situations. Explainthat we do not always allow God to have control of us, and we give in totemptation. Pray together Matthew 6:13.

[one-to-one plan]

First Meeting

• How do I tell my friends what has happened to me? Ask for a fewdetails about specific friends who need to be told. Suggest that the youth hon-estly relate specific experiences, feelings, and relationships that he has hadsince becoming a Christian.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleJesus not only taught the truth, He lived it. Examine the following Scripture pas-sages to see how Jesus’ life illustrated the truth taught in Survival Kit.• Jesus had a quiet time: Mark 1:35.• Jesus memorized the Scriptures: Matthew 4:4,7,10.• Jesus prayed about the details of His life: Luke 11:3.• Jesus faced every temptation that we face: Hebrews 4:15-16.• Jesus shared His relationships to the Father with others: John 14:6-7.

AssignmentsEncourage the student to continue studying daily in Survival Kit. Assign pages18-24 for next week. Preview these lessons.

Describe the importance of church membership in your own life. Encourage

the youth to join the church you now attend if he has not already done so.

If you have discussed a particular habit or problem ares, set a time to pray

daily about it. Agree that you both will pause at this time to pray about

that need.

1. BODY

2. NATURES

3. ASPECTS OF SALVATION

4. SOURCES OFAUTHORITY

Scripture Memory ReviewFollow the pattern suggested in session 1 to review the Scripture memory assign-ment.• Quote the verse yourself, including the reference.• Ask the student to quote it.• Review the verses from the last two weeks. (This is an additional step.)• Preview the verse for the coming week.

ExplainingAssurance CheckupHelp the new Christian overcome doubts about his salvation.• Use 1 John 1:9 to show how Christ provides forgiveness for sin.• Use John 10:28 to show how Christ firmly grasps us, assuring us that we shall

never perish.

Deal with Questions About the Material StudiedThese questions relate to the material studied, but there may be questions ofgreater concern to your youth. Deal with those concerns first. Then discuss oneor two of the following questions toreinforce the truths studied.• What is the difference

between spiritual baptismand water baptism? We arebaptized spiritually at conver-sion (1 Cor. 12:13); water bap-tism follows as a public wit-ness of our salvation (Acts10:47-48).

• Why did Paul use ahuman body indescribing thechurch? Because thechurch is not an organiza-tion; it is an organism.

• After I have studiedSurvival Kit for fivedays, what should Ibe studying theother t w o d a y se a c h week? Usethese days to preparefor Sunday S c h o o l a n d d i s -c i p l e s h i p studies. Also, you may use a part ofthe time to review your Scripture memory verses.

[5]

[one-to-one plan]

Second Meeting

• Why is it important to have fellowship with other Christians?Because there are no “Lone Ranger” Christians. Growth in the Christian lifeis dependent on fellowship with believers. Unique love and support is givento us through the church’s fellowship.

• How can I share my new life with others? If this question is asked,

skip to pages 90-91 and help the youth prepare a one-minute testimony.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the following Scripture passages to show how Jesus’ life illustrated the truththat has been taught in Survival Kit.• Jesus called His own body a temple: John 2:19-22.• Jesus’ body, the church, meets our spiritual needs: John 13:12-15.• Jesus drew many types of people to Himself: Matthew 4:18-20; 9:9.• Jesus constantly drew others to the Father: John 4:39-42.

Assignments

Preview the materials on pages 25-31 in Survival Kit. Share the way that you

have discovered your spiritual gifts, or mention those whose gifts have minis-

tered to you in a special way.

• Pray together. Encourage the youth to begin praying aloud with you.

• Review problems that you have discussed. Commit together to pray at a spe-

cific time each day for each other.________________________________________________________________

Got someting to add?

Do it here.

Scripture Memory ReviewFollow the suggested procedure to review the Scripture memory assignment. Ifthe student has difficulty, encourage more daily review.

ExplainingAssurance Checkup• Use Psalm 119:11 to discuss how the Scriptures help keep us from sin. Assure

the youth that God strengthens us through His Word.• Use 1 John 5:11-12 to reassure the youth that He is forgiven in Christ.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• How does Christian love differ from non-Christian love? Non-

Christian love is rooted in the character of the person who is its source.Christian love is rooted in the character of God. The former exalts man, andthe latter reveals the character of God.

• Is it possible to use spiritual gifts without divine love? No.Spiritual gifts are the divine flow of God’s love.

• How could I “conform to the world” (Rom. 12:1-2)? The term

world refers to sensual lust and pleasure, riches and power, and so on. Being

conformed to the world is being attached to the things that have no perma-

nent, spiritual value.• What does it mean to “renew the mind” as stated in Romans

12:1-2? Renewing the mind is establishing, confirming, redirecting themind toward the things of God’s Spirit.

• How can I discover my unique spiritual gift? Review pages 26-27 inSurvival Kit. Through obedience in exercising the gifts of giving and serving, other gifts will develop.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the following Scripture passages to show how Jesus’ life illustrated the truthtaught in Survival Kit.

• Jesus’ service took Him to the cross: Mark 14:35-36.• Jesus depended on the Father’s power for all He did: John 5:19.• Jesus’ service was to sinners, not to the righteous: Matthew 9:10-13.• Jesus exalted the gift of giving: Mark 12:41-44.• Jesus’ serving produced serving: Mark 1:30-31.

Assignments• Preview pages 32-39 in Survival Kit to summarize the contents of the next

section.• Pray together about specific needs and problems that concern the youth.• Plan with the student a time when she can introduce you to her unsaved

friends and relatives.

[7]

[one-to-one plan]

Third Meeting

Scripture Memory ReviewFollow the same procedure as in the first three meetings to review all verses thathave been memorized.

ExplainingAssurance Checkup• Use Psalm 32:5 to discuss the way to forgiveness that is ours if we deal

directly with God about our sin.• Use 1 John 1:9 to show how confession to God brings about forgiveness from

God.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• Does the old nature change or improve after I become a

Christian? No, the old nature does not change. Galatians 5:17 describes theconstant choice Christians must make. When we choose to follow Christ’snature within us, we have victory. When we choose to follow the old naturewithin us, we have defeat.

• What causes me to fail as a Christian? Not trusting Christ (Col. 2:9-10).

• When did Christ come to live in me? Refer to 1 John 5:10-13. Christcame to abide in you when you first committed yourself to Him; and He con-tinues to dwell in you (Heb. 13:5).

• Is Christ’s indwelling something that depends on my obedience? No. See Galatians 4:6. Christ’s presence is not based on what we do but onthe fact that God is our Father (John 1:12-13). Disobedience causes the lossof fellowship, but it never jeopardizes the indwelling presence of Christ.

• What place does luck or chance have in my Christian life? Thisis a good time to refute the pagan concept that chance or luck plays any partin our lives. Widespread interest in astrology today is nonsense. Ephesians1:4-7,11-14 will be helpful.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate truths that need to be affirmed in the life of yourstudent mentee.• Jesus knew that our old nature would require us to forgive one another again

and again: Matthew 18:21-22.• Jesus knows our danger zones: Matthew 4:1-11.• Jesus makes us fruitful: John 15:16.• Jesus is praying for us even before we are tempted: Luke 22:31-32.• Jesus redeems situations: John 9:1-3.

Assignments

• Assign pages 40-47 in Survival Kit.

• Pray together for each other.

• Become a part of the lives of the student’s family and friends.

[8]

[one-to-one plan]

Fourth Meeting

Scripture Memory ReviewUsing your memory only, compare the list of qualities in Galatians 5:22-23 andColossians 3:8-10. Then review all verses memorized to date. Share experiencesin which memorized Scriptures have been helpful.

ExplainingAssurance Checkup• Use Psalm 119:105 to discuss the source we have for determining God’s will.

The Scriptures give us principles for living in every area of life. The Bible isa totally reliable guide to help us discover the will of God in any situation.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• Am I responsible for my obedience or disobedience? Yes. First

Corinthians 3:11-15 indicates that each Christian is responsible for the wayhe lives his life. Hebrews 10:23-25 teaches that we are responsible for whateffect our choices have on others.

• What is the value of resolving to do better? It is on the level of a NewYear’s resolution, not much. The old nature is never going to be disciplinedinto being better than it is. If one’s resolve to do better, however, is the firststage of repentance (turning from the old nature to the new nature), there maybe much value to it. But it is only a start.

• How is the non-Christian in rebellion against God? The non-Christian is not willing to accept Christ’s lordship in any area of his life.

• Can peace be maintained between my two natures? Not in the sensethat a truce is declared. Romans 8:2 indicates, however, we can be free fromthe conflict between them by deliberately and constantly choosing to letChrist reign in our lives.

• Why do Christians become defeated or discouraged? Primarily, because we choose to trust ourselves and others rather than God. When wechoose to let the will of God reign in our lives, He brings good out of defeatand discouragement.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate truths that need to be affirmed in the life of thestudent.• Jesus taught that the quality of our spiritual foundation determines the effect

life has on us: Matthew 7:24-27.• Jesus showed that our deeds and arguments cannot save us: Mark 10:17-22.• Jesus showed His power over death: John 11:43-44.• Jesus prays for us before we face the old nature’s power: Luke 22:31-32;

Hebrews 7:25.• Jesus assured us of His strength and presence: Matthew 28:18-20.

Assignments• Assign pages 48-55 in Survival Kit.• Briefly summarize the thought to be studied this week.• Pray together. Remember to include some of the areas of conflict between the

old nature and the new nature that you have shared.

[9]

[one-to-one plan]

Fifth Meeting

Scripture Memory ReviewReview all verses memorized. Emphasize the importance of knowing referencesas well as Scripture passages. Instruct youth to say the reference before and afterquoting the verse.

ExplainingAssurance Checkup• Share Proverbs 3:5-6, focusing on the statement “Do not lean on your own

understanding” (NASB). Discuss how this statement relates to searching theBible for answers to our questions. Emphasize that doubt is not the same asunbelief and that God has an answer for every one of our questions. It is smartto ask God to give you an answer for your doubts and questions.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• Is my salvation incomplete at the present time? It is totally complete

in that it cannot be lost. Freedom from the penalty of sin is complete. Theassurance that Christ will return to free us from the presence of sin is alsoassured. Day by day, our risen Lord dwells in us to deliver us from the powerof sin. We are incomplete in the sense that we are constantly and forevergrowing in the faith. We continue to grow in understanding, in relationship,in ministry, in servanthood, in obedience, in knowledge, in love, in capacity,in perspective, in attitude. God wants us to grow. God causes us to grow. So,as Christians we are not all now that we can become, but our salvation is com-plete now. We are not partially saved.

• Does this mean I can sin all I want to? No. God’s indwelling Son

wants to take away your desire to sin. Anything

that does not glorify

Christ will become

less and less enjoy-

able. First John 2:9-10

helps to underscore this

point.• What can cause me to

lose my salvation?Nothing! Sometimes wefeel separated from God.Usually, this is caused bylack of contact throughprayer and Bible study. Or, itis a result of sin and guilt.

[10]

[one-to-one plan]

The nature of

the root always

determines the

nature of the

fruit - Just as

the bulb of the

tulip produces

the tulip flower.

Sixth Meeting

• When can we expect Jesus Christ to return? Jesus Himself said that

no one knows the hour of His return (Matt. 24:36,42). Scripture does promise

that He will return!• Can I have more of the Holy Spirit than I do now? Yes. Ephesians

5:18 commands us to be filled continually with the Spirit. As we yield our-selves more and more to Him, He fills us more and more with Himself.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate truths that need to be affirmed in the life of theyouth.• Jesus assures us of salvation present: John 5:24.• Jesus gives us a new purpose when He saves us: Luke 5:10-11.• Jesus will raise us up in the last day: John 6:38-40.• Jesus expects us to have an unquenchable thirst for Him: John 7:37;

Revelation 21:6; 22:17.

Assignments

• Assign pages 56-62 in Survival Kit.

• Refer to the “Silent Christian” stage on page 8 in Survival Kit. Discuss rea-

sons Christians get that way. One reason is because no one showed them how

to share their faith. Make plans to introduce the youth to as many witnessing

Christians as possible.

[one-to-one plan]

Got someting to add?

Do it here.

Scripture Memory ReviewReview the Scriptures you have memorized. Share with each other how theseverses have been used by the Lord in your life recently.

ExplainingAssurance CheckupMeditate together on Proverbs 28:13. What does it mean to “cover our sins”? Inwhat ways will we not prosper? Another word for mercy is loving-kindness.Confessing and forsaking sin do not automatically earn forgiveness. The penaltyfor rebellion remains the same. Rather, God responds to our repentance by giv-ing us forgiveness even though we do not deserve it. Our assurance is that (1)God’s love is not a reward for being good and (2) our sin does not destroy ourrelationship.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• Am I saved by both Christ’s death and His life? Yes. Through His

death, the penalty for our sin has been removed forever. His risen presence isnow literally living in us, giving us daily victory over sin.

• How do I know when I am

filled with the Spirit? You

will show the fruit of that

filling. Galatians 5:22-23

lists nine characteristics of

the person who has been

filled with the Spirit.• Is this filling of the

Holy Spirit a once-for-all experience? No. Last week welearned thatEphesians 5:18 tellsus to be f i l led con-s t an t ly. God’sdesire is to help usgrow toward matu-rity. As we mature,we discover dif-ferent areas of our lives thatneed to be filled by the Spirit. As each newarea appears, He is present to fill that area with Himself (Eph.3:17-19).

[12]

[one-to-one plan]

Be still and know that I am God . . .(Psalm 46:10, NIV)

Seventh Meeting

• Where do I get the power to work out my salvation? Matthew 28:18

tells us that Jesus has all power in heaven and earth. The One who has all that

power is in us. You do not get the power—you have the One who is the

Power.• How can I know I am fully delivered from a weakness? First

Corinthians 9:24-27 gives an answer. Exercising self-control in all things isthe way to win a physical race. Paul said that we must discipline ourselves forthe spiritual race in order not to be disqualified. You are delivered fully froma weakness when your life patterns make no place for it.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate the following truths.• Jesus causes us to trust Him rather than our own resources: John 15:4-5.• Jesus demonstrated His victory over the power of sin and death: Luke

24:37-43.• Jesus showed that He needed His Father’s resources: Luke 22:41-43.• Jesus frees us from the slavery of sin: John 8:31-36.• Jesus understands our lack of understanding about our own weaknesses:

Matthew 26:33-35.

Assignments

• Assign pages 63-70 in Survival Kit.

• Affirm the importance of a daily, habitual time for study, meditation, and

prayer.

• Pray together, praising the Lord for recent experiences of answered prayer.

[13]

[one-to-one plan]

Got someting to add?

Do it here.

Scripture Memory ReviewAfter reviewing all previous verses, add 1 Corinthians 2:14. Discuss ways thisverse applies to your life’s situations.

ExplainingAssurance CheckupDiscuss together Romans 10:17. Why must hearing precede faith? It is importantto understand that faith is not an automatic activity; it is the result of a process.First, there is authority: the word of Christ. Second, there is awareness of theauthority: hearing the word of Christ. Third, there is faith: the complete total trustwe place in what we hear and know about Him from the Scriptures.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• Why is my own intellect inadequate to make judgments? When

God created man, He gave Him the capacity to love. If man will love God andtrust himself to God, knowledge of right and wrong will be given to Him byGod. Genesis 3:4-5 builds on this truth, telling us that sin entered the humanrace when man decided he was smart enough to judge right and wrong forhimself.

• Why do people become caught up in cults? Through belief that a

man, an experience, or philosophies are sources of truth. It is a deadly trap,

and many people have been deceived. Only God is the source of truth. Only

God deserves our servanthood.• Why did Jesus rebuke religious leaders in His day? Because they

were using tradition as a source of truth. Jesus opposed false religious lead-ers.

• Are all religious traditions dangerous? No. Many traditions are with-

in the framework of the Scriptures. Traditions are dangerous when men

defend them as being more important than the Scriptures. Sometimes tradi-

tions are not so much evil as they are out of date. The Bible is timeless,

beyond cultures, always applicable.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate the following truths.• Jesus stressed the permanent value of Scriptures: Matthew 5:17-20.• Jesus faulted tradition as a corrupt authority: Matthew 23:1-31.• Jesus faulted human experience as a source of authority: Mark 8:11-12; Luke

11:29-32.• Jesus faulted intellect alone as a corrupt authority: Matthew 22:23-29.• Jesus warned against false authorities: Matthew 24:23-25.

[14]

[one-to-one plan]

Eighth Meeting

Assignments

• Assign pages 71-78 in Survival Kit.

• Share 1 Corinthians 11:31 and point out its instruction to examine ourselves

as a part of the pattern for our Christian growth. Lead the student to make a

list of what he considers to be his strengths and weaknesses. Discuss how the

strengths can be used during the coming week. Discuss ways Christ can show

His sufficiency in each area of weakness.

• Pray together. Confess to the Lord each weakness. Claim His strength to be

sufficient even in your weakness.

• Encourage the student to commit his strength to God and to trust Christ to be

sufficient in his weaknesses during the coming week.

[15]

[one-to-one plan]

Scripture Memory ReviewFor your review this week, spot-check a few of the verses learned during thisstudy. Review the verse memorized during this week.

ExplainingAssurance CheckupDiscuss with the youth what it means to be spiritual. Read Galatians 5:16 togeth-er. Then point out that a person is spiritual, not because of his knowledge, intel-lect, or some great experience he has had. Rather, a person is spiritual because heis in a right relationship with the Holy Spirit. Be certain that the student under-stands the difference between Christian maturity and spirituality. By being in aright relationship with the Holy Spirit, a new Christian can be just as spiritual asa mature Christian can be. Maturity is produced as a person continues to live ina right relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• How do you answer those who say that the Bible is only a record

of man’s thoughts? Review the material on page 74-76 in Survival Kit.Could man predict accurately these details about the life of our Lord so manycenturies in advance? This internal evidence is a powerful answer to thatquestion.

• Could not these documents have been written after the events

they predict? Impossible! This is one of the major arguments of those who

try to make the Bible a book of stories and traditions. Too many documents

predate the activities predicted.• How can I understand the Bible better than I do? Continue the life-

long habit of reading it daily. Learn from your pastor, parents, and youthleaders. Participate in Bible studies, such as Sunday School and discipleshipgroups.

• Can’t people find God apart from the Bible? Yes, see Romans 1:20.

What people cannot find apart from the Bible is the record of Jesus Christ and

the way God has provided salvation for all men.• Why do we say the Bible is an eternal source of wisdom? Because

its author is eternal. God has recorded for us, over a 1500-year period, truthsthat extend from eternity to eternity.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate the following truths.• Jesus taught us to search the Scriptures to find Him: John 5:38-40.• Jesus said that the Scriptures would bring us full joy: John 17:13-14.• Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would teach us as we study the Scriptures: John

16:13-15.

[16]

[one-to-one plan]

Ninth Meeting

• Many of Jesus’ teachings and actions are recorded in the Scriptures so that wemight believe in Him: John 20:30-31.

Assignments

• Assign pages 79-86 in Survival Kit.

• Discuss with the student the way peer pressure affects her life. Listen to her

struggles in this area. Share some of your own struggles with peer pressure.

Encourage the student to identify ways to use the Scriptures as her authority

to deal with peer pressure every day of her life. Then

lead the youth to list definite steps

she will take during the

coming week to deal

with peer pressure.

• Pray together about

those times and

places when peer

pressure makes it

difficult to follow

God’s leadership.

• Anticipating the next two sessions, discuss the

vital importance of praying for unbelievers.

[one-to-one plan]

Got someting to add?

Do it here.

Scripture Memory ReviewAs you share Philippians 4:6, stress the meaning of the word everything. Whatdoes this mean? How do we pray for the lost in the spirit of this verse? How canthis passage strengthen us in the daily pressures we face?

ExplainingAssurance CheckupDuring these final two sessions, emphasize the assurance that will help the youthto win family members and friends.• Read Jeremiah 29:11 together. Point out that we need not worry about the

future. God knows the future; we may leave it in His hands.• Apart from prayer, we are powerless before the unbelief of our friends.

Through prayer, we are able to bring the lost to salvation.

Deal with Questions About the Material Studied• In 1 Timothy 2:8, what does it mean to pray “without wrath and

dissension”? Read 1 John 1:6-7. If I have anger toward another or try topray with quarrelsome thoughts inside, my praying will reflect my spirit.Since group prayer is mentioned in 1 Timothy 2:8, such attitudes could bereflected in a person’s prayer. Such praying causes even more tension. It isgood to talk out such problems so that prayer can be an act of unity and love.

• Why does my prayer life grow slowly? There could be many reasons,

such as unconfessed sin, unbelief, or lack of experience. Do not become dis-

couraged. Pray constantly. Have long periods of prayer in the morning/night.

Pray specific sentence prayers throughout the day to thank God, praise Him,

express a thought, love, or a concern. Time and discipline are needed to

develop an effective prayer life.• What right do I have to ask God for answers to prayer? Every

right. We are His children. He wants us to learn to function as “joint heirs”with Christ. He does hear and answer our prayers. God wants the best for us.But what we want is not always best for us. God’s wisdom and perspectiveare greater than ours.

• How long will it take for answers to come? Until God knows the con-

ditions are right for our prayer to be answered. Many times what we consid-

er to be delays in seeing our prayers answered are simply preparation times.• What does it mean to pray in Jesus’ name? It means that you pray

according to Jesus’ nature, under the leadership of His Spirit, and in keepingwith His will.

[18]

[one-to-one plan]

Tenth Meeting

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate the following truths.• Jesus prayed aloud to demonstrate God’s power: John 11:41-42.• Jesus prayed about men: Luke 6:12-13.• Jesus wept over the lost: Matthew 23:37.• Jesus prayed that He would be used to redeem the lost: Mark 14:32-36.• Jesus taught that we must ask before we can receive: Matthew 7:7.

Assignments

• Assign pages 87-94 in Survival Kit.

• Share with the youth experiences of answered prayer that you have had.

• Encourage the youth to keep a written record of prayer requests with the date

the request is made and the date the answer is received. Encourage the

youth to begin such a list during the

f o l l o w i n g

week.

[19]

[one-to-one plan]

Sometimes Jesus founda solitary place whereHe could communicatewith His HeavenlyFather.

Scripture Memory ReviewReview the last three weeks’ memory verses. Discuss the importance of contin-uing to review in the coming weeks.

ExplainingAssurance CheckupGod not only answers prayers; He uses persons. This assurance should give bold-ness for witnessing. Recall together the evidences that you have seen of God’sworking through persons to bring salvation to others. Read together the para-graph that begins “Interestingly enough,” on page 92 in Survival Kit. Meditate onthe truth that God even became a man Himself to bring salvation to the world. Itis obvious that God uses persons to win other persons.

Deal with Questions About the Material StudiedUse these questions as time permits.• Jesus told His disciples to begin witnessing in Jerusalem before

going to other areas. Why? Because He spoke the words to them inJerusalem. From where they were, they were to begin spreading the goodnews (gospel) of His salvation. No person was to be bypassed as they wentout with the message of love.

• Why did God the Father send the Holy Spirit to live in my life?

First, to guide you into all truth. In addition, He has come to be the source of

your witness. He becomes the evidence that you are a Christian and reveals

Himself through what you do and say.• How do I give evidence to others? By your lifestyle, by the words you

speak, by the love you reveal, by your servant spirit toward believers andunbelievers, and by your participation in the church (the body of Christ).

• What excuses do the Silent Christians give as reasons for not

witnessing? Usually, excuses like: “I’m too shy.” “I don’t know how.”

“That’s not my gift.” “I’m a teacher.” “I know I ought to, but I just don’t ever

have an opportunity.” In many cases, it is because no one helped them as they

entered the Christian life. They have not learned what you have learned as we

have studied together these past weeks. Love them. They are our brothers and

sisters and are used of God.• What responsibilities do we have in bringing unbelievers to

Christ? Prayer and witnessing. The Holy Spirit is responsible for the rest. Ifwe are faithful, He will be successful.

Examining Jesus’ ExampleUse the life of Jesus to illustrate the following truths.• Jesus taught us to serve unbelievers: Matthew 5:40-48.• Jesus died for the powerless: Romans 5:6.• Jesus promised us power for witnessing: Acts 1:8.• Jesus received all who came to Him: Mark 10:46-52• Jesus takes little and makes much from it: Mark 6:34-43.

Assignments

• Decide with the student what commitments you wish to make to each other

about your future relationship. Special emphasis can be made by remaining

prayer partners and faith-sharing partners.

• Use 2 Timothy 2:2 to show the student that your task of ministering to his

needs is not completed until he has passed on to another person what he has

learned from you. Encourage the youth now to use Survival Kit for Youth to

help another person who has just become a Christian.
