Your Shelby County Farm Bureau Cooperative is
putting on a celebration for YOU, the owner of
your company.
In 1928, a small group of farmers
joined together in Shelby County to
form a supply cooperative
in order to increase their
buying and negotiating
power. Today, your
Shelby County Coopera-
tive is 680 members
strong with continued
growth and sales in the
busy and competitive
farm world we live and
work in.
On FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, plan
on attending our open house so we can show you
how much your business is appreciated and what
we are doing with your investment in Shelby
County Cooperative.
We are excited to bring you a full static display of
our latest and greatest equipment and rigs. Other
featured items will be a 1949 fuel delivery truck
owned by CountryMark fuels, a cut-away display
giving a unique view of an anhydrous & LP trans-
port truck sponsored by Growmark Products, as
well as your new 2013 LP Bobtail truck and your
new 2013 Petroleum delivery tandem tank truck.
Our biggest, the employees, will be on the lot to
share knowledge & get to know
you better... from delivery driv-
ers to office staff to crops
advisors to managers.
Come & meet them all.
All members will receive
their choice of a special
gift with our anniversary
logo on it.
Opening Ceremonies will
begin at 10:00 am with
lunch provided starting
at 11:00 am.
Stop in to our newly renovated professional office
and boardroom to browse through an abundant
historical display of past employees and board
members, annual reports going back to the 1950’s
and many pictures of friends and farmers from our
many years in business. All our 85 years of history
will be on display for all to enjoy.
Watch your mail in July for a personalized invitation.

Patronage refunds are the distribution of Shelby County Co-op’s surplus earnings to its members. The Board each year determines the distribution percentage rate for the patronage refund. Shelby County Co-op has in the past distributed their patronage refund as 50% in cash and 50% in equity.
The distribution of patronage refunds is based on how much business the member has done with the Co-op during the Co-op’s fiscal year. In order for us to maintain a record of your purchases, you must have your purchases run through your account, whether you pay cash or charge your purchases. Membership and equity can be revoked if no purchases are made within a three year period.
The rate of the patronage refund is determined each year by the percent of member business vs. the non-member business. Shelby County Co-op has paid patronage refunds every year since 1986 to its members. However, a pa-tronage refund is not guaranteed; remember it is based on the Co-op’s earnings.
Equity represents the amount of assets or ownership that the member has in the Co-op and it is spread among the stockholder’s.
The IRS considers your patronage refund and equity as income and you must show it as income on your tax return the year you receive the refund.
Deceased Member: Each month, at the Board of Directors meeting, the Board votes on whether to redeem the stock and equity for a deceased member once the Co-op has received an application for the redemption. The re-demption is paid out according to the requested distribution on the application. As to whether the stock and eq-uity is redeemed depends on the financial situation of the Co-op at the time of the application.
Over 80: The Board determines the redemption age. For many years Shelby County Co-op has redeemed the eq-uity for anyone over 80 years of age. In August of each year, the Board votes whether to pay our members who have turned 80 years of age in the current year, their total equity balance. At this same time if the member wants, we will also refund their $5 in stock.
3% Early Equity Program: For any pre-pay products with our crops departments in December and January and for any fall purchases you make with crops, we will redeem 3% of those totals to you from your equity. We will also take any other purchases that you make in December with Ace Hardware, the LP or petroleum departments and refund 3% of that total from your equity. If you don’t have that much in your equity account we will refund the balance that you do have in your equity.
The past few years in December we have given our equity holders an opportunity to use their equity at Ace Hard-ware. The equity holder may make a purchase for the balance of their equity account but not to exceed $100. The equity holder receives a letter letting them know what their balance is in their equity account. When you make your purchase at Ace Hardware you will need to sign the letter to verify that you made the purchase and Ace Hardware will keep the letter. The employees at Ace Hardware will put the amount of your purchase on your account and we will transfer that amount from your equity to pay for that purchase.
Occasionally, throughout the years there have been other situations when we have redeemed a person’s equity. When these times occur we notify the equity holder by letter of these opportunities.
Shelby County Co-op does not pay interest or dividends on your equity.
Recent record earnings at Shelby County Co-op have allowed larger refunds and equities to our members. Contin-ued high profitable earnings could allow for an earlier redemption age and or higher cash portions on patronage refunds.
If you have any questions please call Becky at 317-398-6655 or 800-875-7427.
Remember, the more you purchase the more you get back in patronage refunds and equity.
