“Amaskohegen” is what the Seminoles called it – meaning “Bright Moon

Lake.” The fi rst Americans to settle the region were also mesmerized by

the view, describing it as “a lake of wondrous beauty.” By the mid-1800s,

Bright Moon Lake had been renamed Lake Weir in honor of Lieutenant

Weir of the United States Army who was killed near its borders in one of

the Seminole Wars.

Trusten Holland Drake, the preferred builder at Lake Weir

Preserve, is a fi fth-generation builder and a member of one

of Ocala’s founding families. His great-great-grandfather
