SURREAL PHOTOGRAPHYANALYSIS

Man RayThis is a surreal portrait photograph taken by Man Ray.

This photograph has been taken in a grainy black and white. The face is highly unrecognizable making it surreal because we have to take a second look to see what the image actually is. The photo appears to be layered with a duplicate to expand the eyes in an artistic way.

The contrast is very high, meaning the darks are very dark and the lights and very bright. This again makes the image rather unusual, when combined with the grainy texture.

Clarence John LaughlinThis is a surreal photo taken by Clarence John Laughlin.

He has combined two different images and cut them into each other to create a black and white surrealist photograph.

The photo is unusual because it combines the face of a person with the face of a statue. This is unusual because we aren't used to seeing anything like this, so we give it a second look.

The lack of blending between the two images makes it look more rough, perhaps adding meaning to it.

Frederick SommerThis is a surreal photograph taken by Frederick Sommer. The photo has been blurred and almost looks like it has been painted with broad inconsistent strokes of paint.

We can understand very little about this photograph. We can see it is a girl with medium to long hair. She looks particularly unhappy, but we cannot see much else.

This is surreal because there isn’t much to understand so we keep looking for more to analyze. It is also tinted slightly to make it look older.

Hans BellmerThis is a surreal photograph that has been taken by Hans Bellmer.

Hans takes very unusual surrealist photographs. This is one of his portrait ones.

Because the photo is so unusual, we can’t really understand what is going on. It is in black and white so we cannot really take any information from the colours.

It appears to be a doll, but also a human, but some fungus? It is very confusing to look at and analyze.
