A warm welcoming wave in the middle of winter!

Winter's here once again. The swells have been rolling in off the Atlantic giving some excellent

surfing conditions but the temperature has plummetted to a seasonal low already too! So why stick around in cold old Blighty when you could be

having fun in the same Atlantic swells but somewhere else in the sun! With much of the UK

surfing population already on a plane out of here, it's time to plan your own Winter Getaway and so here's a guide to our four favourite destinations!

surphangawaysurphangawayJudging on Facebook statuses alone, everybody's pretty much here already – Lanzarote! So our first pick for the perfect place to get away from winter is certainly a popular choice amongst the board riding public and it's not hard to see why!

La Santa looking good!

Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands which can justly lay claim to being the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Prime season is winter, from November to late March, when waves commonly reach heights ranging from 1.5-4.5 m and hardly drop below head-high. The highly indented coastline on the NE, N and W coasts of the island offers a variety of breaks ranging in difficulty, so whether you're an experienced surfer or a beginner you can find your dream spot here.

But it's La Santa itself that Lanzarote is famed for though the main peak, El Quemao is not for the faint hearted and can take down even the hardiest of pro surfers and has been known to do just that!

Fortunately, Famara, further north on the island's west side, offers perfect surfing conditions for all abilities as it winds its way around to the classic spot San Juan, venue of the island's WQS event. So with plenty for everyone, including the sun, that's our getaway pick number one!

If a four hour flight to sun drenched surf is too long for some then half that and you can be here – Portugal, Europe's warmest country and renowned wave magnet! During winter the swell size is around the 6ft mark but can get to 15ft or more, making it a spot for those looking for some challenging surf!

Of course, the southernmost spot surfed at San Clemente is the world renowned Trestles. Whether you're reason to travel is to get in some serious surf training or simply to enjoy what surfing has to offer, then this is the break for you. With five peaks in all (Church, Middles, Lowers, Uppers and Cottons) there's a wave to suit everyone! Mind you, you'll literally find everyone on the wave, especially if it's good so be prepared to hassle!

22.10.12This shot of Kolohe Andino at his local break of T Street in San Clemente was much more than just a highlight of the year. It could too be a historic moment as we see him take to the air for one of the last time's under Nike's helm before he was moved to Hurley.

Two Thousand and Twelve has been full of a staggering number of phenomena.

So what are phenomena? Well put simply, observable occurences!

Everyday we open our eyes and are bound to see some amazing sights. We then commit those sights to memory. But some of us are lucky enough to be

able to capture those moments forever, thanks to the power of the camera. To round off, what for me has been five

fabulous years of capturing these phenomena with a digital camera, are

twelve images that have without doubt been the highlights of the past year.

Injury TimeInjury TimeWords and photos: stu gaston

Certainly Twenty Twelve has been a year when sporting achievement has been pushed to the absolute limits. But

sometimes in achieving the bounds of your abilities, a push too far can break those limits. Like never before, this year

seems to have seen record numbers of surfers being injured through simply striving to constantly better themselves at

what they do best. Take World Tour rookie Kolohe Andino for example who injured himself half way through his maiden

year simply by misjudging a landing of his trademark air and coming a cropper in the fats with a broken ankle. He's now

back in business and seems more determined than ever, recently securing himself a place in the Top 34 for 2013!

However, the months out of the water can be a long road to recovery and the old 'bumpy road' cliché isn't far from the truth! We caught up with two Surphang stalwarts who've

both been on injury time this year and asked them to fll us in on what their time out the water has really been like.
