ACADEMICINTEGRITY

Plagiarism is defined as copying another’swork, or taking text fromanother source and

passing it off as one’s ownwork. Cheating is defined as copying answers from another

student’stestorobtaininganswersfromanotherresourceduringatest,orchanginganswers

after thegradingof a test.Theworkyou submitmustbeyourown.TheSkylineCollege

StudentHandbookhasacompletestatementdefiningcheatingandplagiarism. Ifyouare

caughtcheating,youwillreceiveazeroonthetestandmustreporttotheSupervisorofthe

AlliedHealthPrograms.Ifthereisasecondincident,youwillbesubjecttodisciplinaryaction

includingpossiblesuspensionordismissalfromtheProgram.

ASSIGNMENTOFCLINICALSITE

The clinical coordinator will assign students according to each student’s academic

performance(attendance,grades,andprofessionaldemeanor).Thelocationofthefacility,

timeofshifts,andpersonnelassignedarenotguaranteed.Negotiationsofassignmentsare

prohibited. A clinical assignmentmay be rescinded ormodified at any time. The clinical

coordinatorwillmakeanefforttoobtainaplacementwithina50‐mileradiusofthestudent’s

home.Refusalofanassignmentforanyreasonwillresultinthelossofthestudent’spriority.

IfaclinicalassignmentisnotcompletedbytheendoftheSpringsemester,thestudentwill

receiveagradeof“Incomplete”andwillbeofferedanopportunityintheSummersemester

if there are sites available andpersonnelwilling to supervise as clinical instructors. The

studentwho refusesanassignmentand/or fails tobegin their trainingby theendof the

Spring,willreceiveagradeof“NoPass.”Anystudentwhoisunabletocompletetheirtraining

bytheendoftheSummer,willreceiveagradeof“Incomplete”andwillhavetoreturnthe

followingyearthecourseisoffered(seeReturningStudent).

ATTENDANCE

Attendance ismandatory. This includes arriving to class and the clinical site on the

scheduledtime,inappropriateattire,andpreparedtoreportforduty.Regularattendancein

classandclinicalisanobligationassumedbyeverystudentatthetimeofregistration.

in doubt, the professormay drop such a student from the course." Absencemeans non‐

attendance for any reason. This is an intensive vocational training program in which

informationregardingthecareofhumanlivesisofferedateveryclass.Anyabsencemayput

thestudent'schanceofsuccessatrisk.

"Itistheprerogativeoftheprofessortodeterminewhenabsencesareexcessive."

Summer Three(3)absencesareallowed.

TARDINESS

Frequent tardiness is seen by O.R. managers as unprofessional and can cost a Surgical

Technologisthis/herjob.Therefore,everyclassday,thestudentisexpectedtosigninonthe

attendancesheetby8:00a.m.Everyclinicalday,thestudentwillbeexpectedtodocument

theirhoursonaTimeCard thatwillbesigneddailybytheOperatingRoomNurseManager

orChargeNurse.Time cards are turned into the Instructoronaweeklybasis.Three (3)

occurrencesoftardinessisanequivalentofone(1)absence.

NOTE: For excessive tardiness and/or failure to notify the Program office BEFORE the start time

of Class or Clinical days, the student will have five (5) PERCENTAGE POINTS subtracted from

the next class test. Aswithanyunprofessionalbehavior, thestudentwillbecounseled.Ifthe

patterncontinues,thestudentmayfailtheprogram.

NOTE:O.R.managers routinely review a student’s attendance recordbefore a student is

consideredforclinicalplacement.

NOTIFICATIONPROCEDURE

If,foranyreason,thestudentfindsthats/hewillbelate or absent fromclassortheclinical

site,saidstudentisexpectedto:

1.Keepoffice/cellnumbersoftheInstructorsandClinicalsiteswithhim/heratalltimes.

2. Call the office phone or cell number oftheInstructorsandtheClinicalsiteBEFOREthestart

ofclassortheClinicaldayandleaveamessage.

3.Wheneverpossible, give severaldays’noticeprior to theabsence inwriting.DoNOT

emailtheofficethedayoftheabsence.O.R.NurseManagersdonothavetimetocheckthe

emailforabsentworkers.NeitherdoestheInstructor.

LEAVEOFABSENCE

For leaveofabsence (LOA)ofgreater thanaweek, thestudentmust requestaLeave‐of‐

AbsenceinwritingfromtheProgramDirector.PersonalLeavesaregrantedonacase‐by‐

case basis. For Medical Leaves‐of‐Absence, a letter from the student’s physician must

accompanytherequest.Thelettermustdescribethemaladyandtheestimatedlengthoftime

the student is unable to attend school. Prior to his/her return from aMedical Leave‐of‐

Absence,thestudentmustsubmitastatementfromthephysicianverifyingthatthestudent

still meets the physical requirements for training in this program. Leaves are granted

accordingtothefollowingandmustmeetallofthefollowingrequirements:

1) Student’s academic standing and clinical performance are acceptable and the

2) Leave will not place the student’s standing at risk and the

3) Malady does not pose a long-term risk to the student working in the O.R.

Note:IftherequestismadeduringSURG440&441theInstructormayexercisethepolicy

duringSURG443,theInstructormayrequirethestudenttomakeupthetimewithExtended

BACKGROUNDCHECKS/DRUGSCREENING

Duetoincreasedsecurityathospitalsacrossthenation,theprogramrequiresallcandidates

forthisprogramtosubmittoaBackgroundCheckandDrugScreening.Applicationsforthis

servicearemailedtotheprogramcandidateswhomustassumethefeeof$98.00.(Note:

Thisservicerequiresthestudenttosubmithis/herSocialSecuritynumber.)Shouldthere

be any criminal history or a positive drug screen, the Program Director, Allied Health

Director, theDivisionDeanand theViceChancellorofHumanResourceswill review the

results.Thestudentwillbeadvisedastohisorherstatusintheprogram.Beadvisedthat

the ingestion of controlled substances such as mood regulators, muscle relaxants, and

narcoticanalgesicsplacethestudentandhisorherpatientatriskofinjury.Ifastudentmust

takeanyof thesemedications forhealthreasons, theywillnotbeallowed to train in the

hospital until they can pass a new Drug Screening. The Background Check and Drug

ScreeningmustbecompletedpriortoadmissiontothefirstdayofSURG440inJune.Ifthis

isnotcompletedbythedeadline,thefirstpersononthewaitinglistwillbeaccepted.

COMMUNICATIONDEVICES

Cell phones are to be TURNED OFF intheclassroom.Thestudentmayanswerthecellphone

onlyduringabreak.Electronic devices are NOT to be used during testing. If a cell phone goes

off during a lecture or lab, the student responsible will be required to pay a small fee to the Surgical

Technology Club. Theschoolisnotresponsibleforthelossofordamagetolaptopsorother

electronicdevices.

COURSESYLLABUS

TheSyllabus(orClassSchedule)providesthestudentwiththefollowinginformation:the

date,contentoftheday'slectureorclinicallab,tests,AV's,speaker,location,andrequired

reading.Theclassschedulemaybesubjecttochangewitha24‐hourverbal/writtennotice.

Therefore,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytokeeptheSyllabusathandandrefertoitdaily.

ReadingsassignedforaclassmustbereadPRIORtothatclass.

DISMISSALPOLICY

Violation of any policies set forth in the Surgical Technology Student Handbook and/or

Skyline College Catalog will first result in a verbal counseling. If a second counseling is

required, the Student and the Instructor will meet with the Supervisor of Allied Health

Programs to determine disciplinary action. A written contract of expected behavior or

performancemay be drawn up and signed by the student. A copywill be placed in the

student'srecordsandacopywillbegiven to thestudent.Thestudentshallbeplacedon

probationuntiltheperformancecriteria,aswritteninthecontract,havebeenmet.Failure

tomeetthewrittenbehaviororperformancecriteriamaybecausefordismissal.Thestudent

willbeinformedinpersonandinwritingofthereasonsforhis/herdismissal.

DRESSCODE

Studentsareexpectedtoappearneatandprofessionalatalltimesinclassaswellasatthe

clinicalsites.Eachclinicalsitecouldbeafuturesiteofemploymentorasourceforaletterof

reference.AsrepresentativesofthecollegeandSTprogram,studentsareadvisedtodress

accordingly.

In lab,studentsarerequiredtoweartheSkylinescrubsuituniform(top,pants,andhat)

In the clinical site,thestudentshallwearahospital‐providedscrubsuitaccordingtothepolicyoftheinstitution.

INCOMPLETES

AgradeofIncompleteisgivenonlyifthestudenthasnotcompletedhisorherSURG443

ClinicalHours.Itisgrantedonacase‐by‐casebasisaccordingtotherulesstatedintheLeave

of Absence policy (See Page 21). Completion of Extended Training is not to exceed one

semesterpast thegraduationdateof theclass.The Instructormust receive inwritingan

agreementfromtheClinicalsiteverifyingtheirpermissiontoallowthestudenttoextend

his/her training.Upon completionof theExtendedTraining, the Instructorwill submit a

Change‐of‐Grade request with Admissions and Records to remove the Incomplete. The

QUIZZESANDFINALEXAMS

Quizzesandfinalexamsareworth100 points each.StudentsuseaScantron form and a #2

pencil. Alltestsaretimed.Noonemayentertheclassroomonceatesthasbegun.

Afterthequizhasbeencorrected,theScantronisreturnedtothestudentforareview.The

scoresforthetestsandassignmentsareaveragedtogether.Thelowestscoreisautomatically

dropped.Then,thetotalpointsaredividedbythenumberofpotentialscoresminusone.The

pointsearnedareobtainedbymultiplyingthesemesteraveragebythepercentagevaluefor

QuizzesandAssignmentsasstatedabove.

Ifatestexamhasbeenmissedforanyreason,thestudentmustmakearrangementswiththe

GRADUATION

A student who completes the General Education Requirements to obtain an Associate’s

DegreeinSurgicalTechnologyisinvitedtotheCollegeGraduationCeremonies.Advisingon

obtaininganAssociate’sDegreewillbemadeavailabletothestudentintheFallsemester.At

anytime,thestudentmaymakeanappointmentwithacollegecounselortodiscusshisor

herstatus.

GRADUATIONCEREMONY

ThegraduatingsurgicaltechnologistsmaychoosetocelebrateGRADUATIONonthecollege

campusinamannerinkeepingwiththecollegerulesandinrespectfortheprofessionof

surgical technologists. Thismay include a semi‐formal ceremonywith a presentation of

certificates. Another option is an informal luncheon off campus. Arrangements for the

graduationwillbediscussedatmeetingsoftheSurgicalTechnologyClub.

CERTIFICATESOFCOMPLETION

Upongraduation,thestudentwillreceiveaCertificateofCompletionfromtheAdmissions

andRecordsDepartment,andaLetterofRecommendationfromtheProgramDirector.Itis

suggestedthegraduatebringthesedocuments,alongwiththeFinalClinicalEvaluation,the

SkillsChecklistandtheCaseTrackingLogtoanyjobinterview.JobPlacementservicesmay

beofferedthroughtheCounselingDepartment.

GRIEVANCEPROCEDURE

Should a student disagree with any policy or decision regarding his/her status in the

program,s/hemayinitiatethefollowingprocedureforfilingagrievance:

Step1:ThegrievanceshallbepresentedinwritingtotheInstructorandtheSupervisorof

AlliedHealthProgramswithinthirty(30)calendardaysafterthedateonwhichitarises.The

Instructorshallreplyinwritingwithinseven(7)calendardaysafterreceiptofthegrievance.

Step2:IfthegrievanceisnotresolvedatStep1,thestudentmustthensubmitthewritten

grievancetotheDeanofMath/ScienceandTechnologywithinseven(7)calendardaysafter

the presentation of the Instructor's reply. The dispute is then handled by the college’s

grievanceprocedure.(See the Skyline College Student Handbook).

HEALTHPOLICY

APPOINTMENTS

Doctor,dentalorotherappointmentsshouldbemadeafterclassorclinicalhours.If,under

extenuatingcircumstances,thestudentmustattendanappointmentduringclasshours,the

studentisexpectedtonotifytheInstructor,in writing,prior to making the appointment.NOTE:

ThestudentwillbetraininginaHealthcarefacility.Therefore,ifthestudentpresentswith

contagious symptoms, s/he is strongly advised to stay home and rest. Examples of

contagioussymptomsinclude:

Fever greater than 100° F

Excessive cold symptoms (drippy nose and eyes, sneezing)

Skin eruptions, or recent and/or draining wounds on hands or arms.

Ifthestudentisexperiencingpainforwhichover‐the‐countermedicationsareineffective,

thestudentmustseeaphysicianandreporttotheInstructor.ThestudentmayNOTtrainat

theClinicalsiteifheorshemusttakeacontrolledsubstanceforpainrelief.

test)todetermineifs/heis“seropositive”(immune).If,afterreceivingthevaccineseries,

thestudentfailstoseroconvertfromnegativetopositive,s/hemustreceivea“booster”and

have another titer drawn. If, after the booster, s/he is still not considered immune, the

studentshallreceivecounselingbytheInstructorabouthis/herrisksworkinginanO.R.If

thestudentacceptstheserisks,s/hewillbeaskedtocompleteawaiverform.Acopyshall

SURG442:SURGICALSPECIALTIES

Coversthemostcommonproceduresandequipmentutilizedbythesurgical technologist

during specialty surgery. These surgeries include neurological, cardiac and pediatric

procedures.Preparesthestudentforthenationalcertificationexamination. Thiscourseisa

series of lectures, demonstrations and online videos of the various surgical specialties.

Courseworkincludesstudyquestionsfromthetextandweeklyquizzes.TheFinalExamis

200multiple‐choicequestionscoveringMEDA415,SURG440,441,442andisgradedby

Scantron.The student must achieve a grade of 75% or better to pass the Surgical Technology

Program.

SURG443:CLINICALPRACTICEFORSURGICALTECHNOLOGY

Moststudentswillhaveone8‐weekClinicalRotationateachoftwo(2)differenthospitals

selected by the Instructor. The site selection will be based in part on proximity to the

student’shomeandthestudent’scompatibilitywiththeO.R.environment.To pass this course,

the student must 1) complete a minimum of 500 hours and, 2) achieve skills in surgical technology

at the level of an Advance Beginner (See Final Evaluation, Appendix C). They must also achieve

the Standard Level of Case Requirements (Appendix D).

The student is to be assigned to appropriate learning opportunities while in Clinical. A

Preceptormustalwaysbeimmediatelyavailabletoscrub‐inwiththestudent.Sometimes,a

HospitalmaybeshortofO.R.staffandmayaskthestudentto“fill‐in”.Astudentmay not be

assignedinplaceofatrainedemployee.Thispolicyisinplacetoprotectthepatientfrom

harm,andthestudentandthehospitalfromlegalliability.

SURG 443: Clinical Practice for Surgical Technology isgradedasCredit/NoCredit(pass/fail).

CLINICALTRAINING(SURG443):DOCUMENTATION

Prior to beginning Clinical Training, the studentwill receive the Clinical Handbook. The

HandbookcontainsClinicalObjectivesforeveryweektoguidethestudentandhisorher

Preceptorinthetraining.TheobjectivesareusedbythePreceptortoevaluatethestudent's

weeklyperformance.TheseWeeklyClinicalEvaluationsaredue every Wednesday.Attheend

of the First Rotation, the Preceptors will be asked to complete a Final Evaluation. (See

Appendix B).TheFirstRotationEvaluation isgradedtogive feedback to thestudentand

identifyareaswherethestudentneedsimprovement.TheFinalClinicalEvaluationisgraded

asPass/Fail.To pass the Surgical Technologist Program, the student MUST satisfactorily meet

the Clinical Objectives by receiving a Passing grade on the Final Clinical Evaluation (see

Appendix C).

The hours that the student has spent in the Clinical Training must be verified by the StudentTime

Card. This is to be signed DAILY by the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager. Each week, the student

submits the Time Card along with the other required documents. (See below). Topassthiscourse,

the student must train for a minimum of 500 hours and remain in training until the

completionoftheSpringsemester.

During the First Clinical Rotation, the student is expected to submit a report of a surgical procedure

for every day of training during the previous week. The report is to follow a specific format. It is

submitted for review by the Instructor every Wednesday. These reports are used as a learning tool

to record the Clinical experience and as an evaluation tool for the Instructor. In addition, this has

been proven helpful in reducing stress when the student uses it to vent his/her feelings about

Clinical. The contents of these reports are kept in strictest confidence. While the reports are only

required for the First Clinical Rotation, the student is encouraged to keep documenting his/ her

experiences throughout both rotations.
