COURSE OVERVIEW / INTENDED AUDIENCE For dentists, this soft tissue diode Laser certification course is designed for those who are considering the purchase of a laser, who have recently jumped into laser dentistry or those who would like to increase the use of the diode laser in their practice. You do not need to own a laser to attend this course. For hygienists, you do not need to be employed in a laser dentistry practice to attend this course. Before treating patients, we strongly encourage that your dentist has the appropriate education, treatment and experience that meets Iowa Dental Board standards for laser supervision. This enables them to delegate and supervise laser treatments so the techniques taught in the course can be immediately incorporated into patient treatment protocols Topics include laser physics and safety, as well as the preparation, maintenance and asepsis of the dental laser. Participants will learn the basic laser techniques of incision, excision, ablation, coagulation and vaporization. The course curriculum focuses on surgical and non-surgical treatment options used daily in the office to improve patient comfort, productivity and expand the services he provides patients. Treatment planning, insurance coding and purchasing considerations will be discussed. Surgical techniques for dentists include: Non-surgical techniques for dentists & dental hygienists include: Following the lecture portion of the course, participants will have a hands on simulation of techniques using pig jaws as well as experiencing non-surgical procedures on each other. Dentists and Hygienists without a current Iowa license are unable to participate in human hands-on activities but are welcome to attend the class and will have hands on with pig mandibles. Videos of procedures and step by step instructions will be provided. This course meets the Curriculum Guidelines and Standards for Dental Laser Education certification standards. A written test and oral evaluation will be used to assess participant knowledge and proficiency prior to completion of the course. COURSE SCHEDULE:

Courses will be conducted 10 minute breaks every hour. Please arrive by 5:15 pm in order to complete registration and gather course materials. You may bring food into the course for dinner on Thursday. Lunch will be provided on Friday. If you have special dietary needs, please bring your own food for Friday’s session. COURSE INSTRUCTORS:

Alan Swett, DDS, Lisa Swett, RDH, BS, MS, Sarah Bauer, RDH and/or Hannah Lang, RDH

Dr. Swett maintains a full time private practice in Johnston, Iowa. He has been directly involved in laser dentistry since 1992. From 1993 through 1997, he was one of five dentists nationwide to conduct the clinical trials which resulted in the FDA approval of the hard tissue (tooth and bone cutting) laser in 1997.

Dr. Swett is an adjunct associate professor at the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry. During the last ten years, he has been actively involved with integrating laser dentistry education into the curriculum and laser dentistry techniques into patient care. Since 2013, he has been responsible for training all dental faculty/graduate students on the soft tissue diode laser and all college employees on laser safety.

Over the years, he has co-authored papers, worked on laser research and has consulted on laser and hand piece design. He has provided laser dentistry education for universities, dental companies and study clubs throughout the country. He has years of experience training dentists, hygienists and assistants on all dental technologies.
