!INTRODUCTIONMurata has continued research on surface acoustic wavefilters since 1970. In 1976 we offered for sale our firstsurface acoustic wave filter to be used in the IF of high-fidelity FM tuners. Then, we successfully developed andoffered for sale the surface acoustic wave filter for the videoIF of color television sets.Now surface acoustic wave filters have been partsindispensable to electronic circuits of video equipments andtelecommunication equipments such as TV/VCR.
Murata has successfully put surface wave filtersincorporating ZnO thin film into series. This is the world'sfirst success in doing so, and Murata has accomplishedresin molded type filters developed with long years'abundant experience and high grade machining technology.Also in the range of high frequencies, SAW filters forDBS/telecommunication equipments have been put intoseries with Murata's high technology which can becompared with LSI technology.

!BASIC STRUCTURE
The basic configuration of a SAW filter is two IDTs (combtype electrode) on the piezoelectric substrate.The first IDT connected to the signal source generates asurface acoustic wave, which propagates along a substratesurface to the second IDT, which transforms SAW energyinto electrical voltage on a load connected to the IDT.This is shown in the Fig.-1.
Frequency characteristics of the IDTs can be calcuated bymeans of impulse model. In case of Normal IDT which hasa constant pitch and a constant overlap, the IDT and thecorresponding impulse is shown in Fig.-2 below.
When a voltage is fed to the IDT, the direction of the voltageis the positive-negative-positive-negative at λ 0/2 interval.The voltage is then subjected to expansion and shrinkage ofsubstrate by the piezoelectric effect. One impulse pair ofadjacent positive and negative polarities is corresponding toone electrode pair.When the wavelength of the surface acoustic wavesgenerated by each impulse is equal to the electrode pitchλ 0, we get maximum SAW energy.
When wave velocity is V, electrode pitch is λ 0, number ofelectrode pair is N, then frequency characteristics of normalIDT can be calculated by the equations shown below.
