BEFORE: The original 1970s-style facade. There’s a host of intriguing surprises

about this Eleebana house.Drive down the street and the property

is on one side with Lake Macquarie sparklingat the end of the road. So it is a revelation toarrive at the modern glass and timber-panelled front door and look in past thegleaming dark-tiled open-plan living andkitchen area and see the water again.

The street is on a sharp bend in LakeMacquarie and the house occupies a quiet, waterfront block. Its superb design maximisesthe scenic vista out past the pool with itsnatural-looking rock waterfall, across the laketo a bush-lined stretch of reserve.

The next surprise is the home’s age. It is onlyafter talking to James, who owns the house

with his wife Karen, that Idiscover the smart renderedproperty with a Colorbondroof is not the new build itappears from the street. Theyhave lived there for 10 years, with their threesons, aged 7, 10 and 12, in what was originallya 1970s-style brick and tile house.

James says it was the decision to have a newkitchen that acted as the catalyst for thecomplete transformation of the split-levelproperty.

“The kitchen wasn’t in the best spot so wehad to improve it,” he says. “Our en suiteoccupied the north-east aspect of the homewhich was probably where the kitchen shouldhave been.”

They decided to get professional advice thenopted to go with the major changes proposedfor both inside and out. The design anddocumentation was done by Seymour LawlerArchitects and architectural consultationduring the building works was by Mark LawlerArchitects with Stephen Coon as projectarchitect. The builder was Steve Martin, whosekeen eye for detail ensured a high standard ofwork.

Stephen says the original street facadepresented a “bizarre roof form”. He says the

CLEAN SLATE: Dark tiling is practicaland stylish. PICTURES: PHIL HEARNE,

FLASHBACK PHOTOGRAPHY

This mustard-coloured wall with alcoves and anorange leather lounge in the cosy living room werechosen by the owners and provide bright splashesof colour to an otherwise monochrome palette.

FAVOURITE FEATURE

new front roof simplifies the form and allowsother elements to become the main visualfeature, such as the new natural stone frontfence (by stonemason John Wilson) which isnot just a decorative feature but also serves tohide the low-slung washing line from thestreet.

Inside, the top level was virtually gutted andreworked to maximise the water views, withGlas-STAX doors opening onto the back deck(there is a new sheltered front deck, too, witha barbecue). The stacking doors provide aseamless transition from inside to outsidewithout interference from columns or fixedglass panels.

James says: “The kitchen had to move to the

bedroom so we had to find a spot for ourbedroom. There was a sauna and spa in thehouse that were never used and occupied aview over the water so we moved our masterbedroom there.”

The bedroom has an en suite which sharesthe glorious water views through its timberbifold window doors.

Both rooms are now ideally located – thekitchen has gone from the dark centre of thehouse to the north-east end overlooking thestreet and has an opaque glass splashbackwindow that lets in the northern light and agenerous four-metre-long CaesarStone islandbench that can fit a dozen people around it.The Nadin-West kitchen won the kitchen of the

year award in 2010 for kitchens under $30,000.James says dark floor tiling was chosen

throughout this open-plan area because thedark slate that was there before had proved sopractical.

Their boys had shared a bedroom, whichthey enjoyed, but by using void areas in theprevious design another two bedrooms havebeen created on the ground level with morerooms on the level below for use whenneeded as well as two separate doublegarages.

“You start doing these things and wonderwhether it’s worth it,” James says. Now theyare enjoying the results and happily confirmthat it was worth it.
