English language arts and literacy in US public education.

• OE partners with schools, states and organizations to meet the current need for specialized expertise in K-12 college-and-career-ready education.

• OE has currently focused its efforts on the successful nationwide implementation of the CCSS.

• OE is developing four series of 6-12 model units (shorter than modules) for New York to help teachers interpret the CCSS at the instructional level. Making Evidence-Based Claims is one of these series.

Greeting

"We have work to do. You can't just sit in a seat and

grow smart ... I promise, you are going to do, and you

are going to produce. And I am not going to let you

fail.“ – Marva Collins, leader and activist.

At your tables:

• Introduce yourselves.

• Share a time when your effort – your production – led to an

accomplishment you are especially proud of.

Our Work Together these Two Days

• A deep focus on the close reading of complex texts and using evidence from text to support claims.• Why complex text? Close reading? Evidence-based

claims?• How does this look in the classroom?• What are the instructional moves I need to be making, or

helping my colleagues make, in order to ensure college and career readiness for all students?

• We will learn together about the importance of complex text, close reading, and evidence-based claims.

• We will examine how students learn to do these things using lessons that you will eventually see embedded in the modules.

• We will discuss the importance of a “growth mindset.”

Norms of Collaboration

Learning TargetsGuiding Question: How can close reading of complex text and developing students’

capacity to make evidence-based claims close the achievement gap and support all students to meet the demands of the Common Core Standards?

Learning Targets:• I can describe the relationship between complex text, close

reading practices, and students’ preparation for college and careers.

• I can analyze lessons focused on close reading and evidence based claims in preparation for application in my classroom (or to support others in applying in their classrooms).

• I can continuously analyze and enhance my own growth mindset, as well as those of my students and colleagues.
