Director John Curran paints a vivid picture of the first few hoursfollowing the infamous 1969 incident when Senator TedKennedy accidentally drove off a bridge, resulting in the deathof campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne.

Among the most morally murky episodes in the late 20th-century US politics was Kopechne’s death in what wouldbecome known as the Chappaquiddick Incident. The Kennedydynasty had lost three heirs apparent by 1969, leaving Ted thefamily’s last hope to carry their name into the upper echelonsof US politics. After the tragedy, the more profoundmalfeasance begins, when a battalion of spin-doctors gets towork on the cover-up, using the Apollo 11 moon landing as adistraction.

A soaring, evocative audio-visual journey into the life, cultureand landscapes of one of Australia’s most beloved singers –Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.

Blind from birth, he found his identity through song and thehaunting voice that has already become legend. His debutalbum introduced Australia to the songlines and culture of hisElcho Island community, but he found himself increasingly tornbetween city and country, present and past, self and thecommunity to which he owed so much. Co-produced byGurrumul himself, the film uses the tools of his music – chord, melody, song – and the sounds of the land to craft an audio-firstcinematic experience of beauty and power.

From Oscar nominated director Richard Linklater (Boyhood)comes this funny yet heartbreaking buddy road movie, in whichthree aging Vietnam War veterans—soft-spoken Doc (SteveCarell), fast-talking Sal (Bryan Cranston), and sober Mueller(Laurence Fishburne)—reunite for a different kind of mission:the burial of Doc’s only child, who has been killed in the IraqWar.

As this trio of old friends makes its way up the East coast,Linklater gives us a rich rendering of friendship, a grand mosaicof common life in the USA, and a striking meditation on thepassage of time and the nature of truth. A great movie from oneof America’s finest filmmakers.

He was raised in the countryside andfound liberation in literature and ideas. When six-time Academy Award nominee Dame Maggie Smith was born in 1934,26-year-old Bette Davis was causing a stir as the vicious Mildred Rogers in OfHuman Bondage, a role refused by many actresses who feared playing someone

so unsympathetic. When she was overlooked for an Oscar nomination, the scandal led to anoverhaul of the Academy’s voting procedure. Meanwhile, 12-year-old vaudeville performerFrances Ethel Gumm had just become Judy Garland and was a mere 4 years away fromtravelling the immortal yellow brick road to Oz.We are celebrating these trailblazing, great dames whose talent, wit and charisma have setcinema screens alight over the last century. The films selected all earned their stars AcademyAward nominations, with Bette Davis chewing the scenery as middle-aged Broadway starMargo Channing in the sharply comedic  All About Eve  (1950), Judy Garland as themesmerising Vicki Lester in A Star is Born (1954) and Maggie Smith, winning her Oscar forher striking, glacial schoolteacher in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969).

A Star is Born

BETTE DAVISThe grand dame of Hollywood’s Golden Age, BetteDavis commanded attention with her striking visageand powerful performances in films such as WhatEver Happened to Baby Jane? But from the get-go,she was blazing trails as one of cinema’s most distinct,eye-expressive actresses.

JUDY GARLANDOne of the brightest stars of Hollywood’s GoldenAge, Judy Garland dedicated her life to entertainingpeople. And in that she succeeded as few others have.Across film, radio, television and vaudeville, sheamassed a timeless body of work that continues tocaptivate audiences.

DAME MAGGIE SMITHSteely wit and passion for perfection are what definethe illustrious career of Dame Maggie Smith. She haswon two Oscars and numerous other awards forperformances on stage, film and television, and isconsidered to be one of Britain’s finest and mostversatile actors.

The story of a young singer whose rise to stardom is mirroredby her older lover’s inexorable fall, the second version of A Staris Born remains one of the most emotionally compelling filmsever produced by Hollywood.

Expertly directed by George Cukor who skilfully negotiatesevery turn in the film’s roller coaster of a narrative, the film isalso graced by two of the finest performances ever put onscreen. Judy Garland is perfectly cast as the aspiring singer, andJames Mason is no less brilliant as the tragic figure of Garland’sfading mentor and husband. A bona-fide classic.

A triumph of the American cinema – the quintessentialdepiction of ruthless ambition in the entertainment industry – itis also a salute to the indomitability of actresses like Bette Davis.

Davis shines in her greatest role as veteran actress MargoChanning whose hard-edged personality and experience goesup against the wiles of a younger actress — powerhouse versusingénue, age versus beauty. Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Oscar-winning drama is one of the greatest films about Hollywood, women, acting, ageing and good old-fashioned rivalry. Nowover 60 years old All About Eve hasn't aged a day. MargoChanning would either be very proud or very jealous.

Based on Muriel Spark’s beloved novel, the film stars MaggieSmith in one of her finest performances as a headstrong andunconventional teacher.

Jean Brodie is a free-spirited teacher at a Scottish girls' schoolduring the 1930s. She encourages her young pupils to embraceromantic ideals, educating them about love and art rather thanhard facts. However, her controversial teaching philosophydraws the ire of the school's headmistress, Miss Mackey, and, asMiss Brodie becomes entangled in a love triangle, her behaviourtowards her favourite students becomes increasinglymanipulative. When her influence with her young chargesindirectly causes a tragic event, Jean begins to unfold, questioning everything she believes in.
