of Administrator to General Manager when our Founder and Director Dr James Carstens retired. It was a time of great change for the service.” Now, with a new name, Hospice Tairawhiti is providing new services thanks to increased staff numbers, and have opened the Hospice Shop to help cover the annual shortfall in funding. Barbara is quick to add that all these achievements are a result of the great team at Hospice, which includes all staff, board members and volunteers. “It is a pleasure to work with people who are passionate about what they do, people who do it with the sole objective of providing great care to patients and whanau.”

Staff Profile:Barbara Grout, General Manager

Reporting directly to the Trust Board, General Manager Barbara Grout is responsible for all day-to-day management decisions and for implementing Hospice Tairawhiti’s short and long term plans.

It is a very diverse role within a small organisation, but one that Barbara loves. “I enjoy having variety in my work and this job certainly offers that,” she says. Barbara oversees all hospice activities, making sure the organisation is meeting the needs of the community as well as any legal and contractual requirements, and ensures all hospice assets and resources are managed effectively. In the four years she has been general manager there have been many challenges. “I moved from the role

Volunteer Profile:Suzy Read

Without volunteers the Hospice shop would not run as efficiently and effectively as it does. A friendly smile and a nice hello is how Suzy Read greets everyone as they enter the shop.

Suzy joined our volunteer team over two years ago, working first as biographer before moving into the Hospice Shop. More recently she has also helped

with patient family support, and she’s a first port of call for special events too. Such a range of talents make Suzy a huge asset to the team. “Hospice is a great organisation to be involved with,” says Suzy. “When

my father-in-law was very sick, the support Hospice gave to him and the family was amazing.”It was after that, she decided to join the Hospice team as a volunteer. “Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and I get immense satisfaction knowing I am helping others. I feel useful and needed.”

If you would like to volunteer for hospice give our volunteer co-ordinator Jane Kibble a call on 869 0552 or email [email protected]

Fashion ShowThe inaugural Hospice Shop Fashion Show held in October was such a success there are plans to make it a regular event on the Hospice calendar.

Showcasing the fantastic clothing we have donated everyday by our generous supporters, the evening attracted around 70 attendees while another 35 volunteered their time as models and helpers. Shop Manager Brenda Kinder was a real hoot as MC for the evening - her larger than life personality and off the cuff humour had the audience in stitches. Following the show attendees hit the racks purchasing up large, and enjoyed refreshments and nibbles provided by volunteers.

In addition to thanking all fantastic volunteers who helped make this evening such a success we would like to acknowledge the following businesses who also contributed: David Moore Pharmacy, Sean Shivnan Pharmacy, Bramwells Pharmacy, More FM, Kevin Hollis Glass, Martins Party Hire, and our fantastic photographer Raph Heria.

Caring ConnectionsOnce again all Farmers stores will be raising funds for hospices throughout the country in the lead up to Christmas. As well as having the Trees of Remembrance in all 56 stores – Farmers are also selling two specially designed, hand painted baubles from early October. There are two designs – Pohutukawa by Michael Tuffery and Kowhai by Letitia Lam. Inspired by the iconic “kiwi” Christmas Tree, Michael’s design is in the traditional colours of Christmas, laden with “antipodean holly” symbolising our sense of place. The

design also reflects Tivaevae capturing the vibrant beauty and unique design so familiar througout the Pacific. Kowhai is the offical flower of hospice. The design was inspired by the

concept of being looked after which is the essence of the service Hospice provides. The baubles are available exclusivley at Farmers stores at a cost of $10 each – the full $10 will be donated to support hospice services in our community. So please head into Farmers and purchase these beautiful pieces of art for your Christmas tree and help raise funds for your hospice. Farmers store manager Lee Geros and Hospice Tairawhiti’s Kelly Simpson place cards on the Tree of Remembrance in the Gisborne store. The tree will be in store until Christmas Eve. Farmers have kindly donated a second tree which has been placed in our Hospice Shop, 66 Peel Street.

Christmas time For many in our community this Christmas might be the first one without a loved one or pet who has died. We would like to invite you all to take a moment to remember those people. The build up to Christmas for bereaved people can be a time of dread and sadness – your Christmas gift to another can be your time and your presence. An offer of a cuppa, walk on the beach, just time together can make a real difference.

November 2015 marked our seventh annual Strawberry Festival and support for this event is as strong as ever, with $5,000 being raised.

Hospice Tairawhiti Funding Development & Public Relations Co-ordinator Kelly Simpson said she was blown away by the generosity of sponsors, volunteers and entertainers. “This was my first year managing this event and I couldn’t believe that absolutely everything was donated or

sponsored, from the strawberries and ice cream right down to the ice we use in the chilly bins” says Kelly. “this means that all the money raised on the day goes directly to Hospice to help us care for patients and whanau in Tairawhiti’.The Strawberry Festival is a fun family focused fundraiser. With bouncy castle, facepainting, the Lions train, and fantastic entertainment by youth it is a great place to hang out for an hour or two with your family, enjoy new season strawberries and ice cream and support a good cause.Special thanks to: Pak n Save, Bay Trade Supplies, More FM, Gisborne Herald, Craigs Investment Partners, BDO, Gisborne District Council, Business Applications, Blueprint Imaging, Eastland Trader, The Sound Crew, Forbes Appliance, Hirepool and Gisborne Wainui Lions Club.
