Querying CrossRef (alternate titles)

???????????????????????
I’m not sure if this is right, I’m
not going to use it. Also, I am going to blog
about this every day for a week.
Are you sure? My query says the journal title for that DOI is ‘Feline Obesity Online’
‘Fe Weight Man’ is an alternate spelling of
‘Feline Obesity Online
Later, after a DOI-to-metadata query…
![Page 11: Support Update (2011 CrossRef Workshops)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051616/556763edd8b42a05068b5722/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

*sigh* I guess I can’t link to this article…my well-funded colleagues will have to find online
research elsewhere.

What you can do:
Verify your titles are correct in our system:
Title list: www.crossref.org/titleList/
Title .csv file: http://www.crossref.org/titlelist/titleFile.csv (+5MB)
XML journal list: http://www.crossref.org/xref/xml/mddb.xml
![Page 14: Support Update (2011 CrossRef Workshops)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051616/556763edd8b42a05068b5722/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Follow best practices for managing titles:
All series (journal, book, conference proceedings) must have an ISSN.
A distinct ISSN must be supplied for each distinct version of a title. ISSNs may (and should) be assigned retroactively.
Online versions of journals encompassing multiple historic print titles should each be assigned distinct print and online ISSNs.
Journals should be deposited under the original title

Deleting DOIsQ: How can I delete my DOIs?
Short answer:
DOIs can’t be deleted
Ugly truth:Sometimes they need to be deleted:
Created in error (usually without permission)
Unsustainable
Not assigned to DOI-worthy content
“ ”10.5555/whoops
![Page 16: Support Update (2011 CrossRef Workshops)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051616/556763edd8b42a05068b5722/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Current Procedure
① Update DOI with deletion metadata DOIs are assigned to “CrossRef Journal of
Deleted DOIs”, other metadata is overwritten
② Direct DOI to CrossRef error page
http://www.crossref.org/deleted_DOI.html
![Page 17: Support Update (2011 CrossRef Workshops)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051616/556763edd8b42a05068b5722/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Deletion Criteria
Delete soon after creation – DOIs that have been queried and used in citations shouldn’t be deleted
Use CrossRef procedures – Don’t redirect DOIs to our page unless you plan to maintain them
-or-
Implement your own procedures with CrossRef consent – we encourage this
![Page 18: Support Update (2011 CrossRef Workshops)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051616/556763edd8b42a05068b5722/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Alternatives to deletionAliasing –
Most DOI deletion requests can be solved with aliasing
✔10.5555/good_doi ✖10.5555/bad_doi
✔10.5555/good_doi
10.5555/bad_doi
DOI query for DOI 10.5555/bad_doi metadata for 10.5555/good_doi
http://dx.doi.org/10.5555/bad_doi http://dx.doi.org/10.5555/good_doi
![Page 19: Support Update (2011 CrossRef Workshops)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051616/556763edd8b42a05068b5722/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Other alternatives
Maintain the DOIs if possible
Contact the content owner for permission (we can help with this)
