important supply chain processes and be able to provide an honest, accurate appraisal of their current performance.  Participants also should be able to provide ideas for improving the supply chain processes with which they are most familiar.

• Encourage commitment and focus• Emphasize team experience and quality• Make it easy for supply chain stakeholders to participate

– Senior management must fully understand, embrace, and endorse the project, encouraging their employees, customers, and suppliers to participate thoughtfully and honestly.  The assessment cannot be viewed as simply a survey, or as a low‐value activity that should be completed if convenient. 

• Emphasize team experience and quality• Make it easy for supply chain stakeholders to participate

– Leading a supply chain alignment and assessment is no small feat, and must be led by a seasoned supply chain expert who has the knowledge and experience required to bring all of these elements together into an efficient and productive whole. 

• Make it easy for supply chain stakeholders to participate

– Doing so is critical to gathering robust information.  In our experience, Web‐based survey tools can be highly effective in this regard.  In addition, companies should encourage participants to set aside sufficient time for the assessment, to be prepared to reference key supply chain metrics, and to think carefully about each response they make and be prepared to expand upon their responses during follow‐up interviews.

Case Example:  A Supply Chain Alignment Focused on Post‐Merger Integration

• Due to poor post‐merger integration of processes such as customer service, quality assurance, and distribution, a manufacturer’s customers were experiencing long lead times, low quality levels, and inconsistent order fulfillment. 

• Working with Supply Chain Edge, the manufacturer surveyed its customers, suppliers and employees on supply chain performance. This exercise not only identified the company’s supply chain shortcomings, but also revealed substantial gaps between the perceptions of the company’s customers and those of its employees.

• To understand why these gaps existed and facilitate improvements, the assessment team supplemented the online survey with in‐depth group and one‐on‐one interviews with key stakeholders.

• As a result of the project, the company was able to create a detailed improvement plan that reflects the priorities of its most important constituents, and now can pursue supply chain improvement programs with high potential for reward.

Conclusion

• Many companies have made admirable progress on driving cost and inefficiency out of their supply chains by consolidating transportation vendors, enhancing their internal supply chain management capabilities, or making changes to procurement.

• However, the rate at which many of these efforts are bearing fruit is now beginning to slow, and companies are struggling to identify their next source of significant value. 

• A comprehensive and carefully designed and executed supply chain assessment and alignment exercise can be a critical step in the right direction, helping companies reinvigorate their cost‐reduction and efficiency‐improvement initiatives while laying the groundwork for stronger customer relationships and long‐term competitive strength.
